Does anyone else get 1986 vibes from this team?

Sometimes it takes a game like we saw against USC to reveal the character of a team. I was a Senior at Penn State in 1986 and I remember Penn State needing a big 4th down conversion against Cincinnati to win that game at home. We know what happened with that 1986 team, which later went on the road and beat #2 Alabama and ND in a close game later in the season before beating Miami in the Fiesta Bowl.

The USC win was one of the best wins in the CJF era, and arguably the best true road win CJF has had since he has been at Penn State. I couldn't believe that he went for those 4th downs. I'm glad they worked out, and I'm very happy for him and for the team. Here are just a couple of other observations:

Drew Allar, regarding his interview after the game. My impression is that Allar is right in the midst of rapidly maturing as a person and a leader, and he seems like a great kid. He took a big leap in so many ways in that USC game. We may find that Allar plays at a different level for the remainder of his college career as a result of this game.

Coach AK: Enjoy this guy now, because he is going to be a very successful head coach somewhere soon. His creativity is off the charts, and he really seems to figure out ways to tailor his gameplan to the specific talents of his players. The drive early in the game reminded me of when Penn State overwhelmed Arizona in the opening game of 1999. That early USC drive only ended in a FG, but you could see the team feeding off of AK's playcalling. I expect this team to continue to get better on offense over the final few weeks of the season.

I don't expect this team to win a championship this year, but Penn State has something special going on right now. I'm going to sit back and enjoy the rest of this season unfold.
Nope. Going into 1986, the previous 8+ years PSU football had shown a pretty consistent ability to compete with top 5-10 teams, with many signature wins. Nebraska, ND, Alabama, ....... The current team will have a chance to do the same, but really for the first time since 2016 which also included a blowout loss to UM and a pathetic loss to pitt. And then pretty much losses to the top 10 teams Franklin's teams faced right through today. Sure, the USC game was a nice win against a talented team, but which alredy had 2 losses. PSU in the late 70's and into the 80's had played for MNC's multiple times, whereas the current team and CJF's teams haven't even made the 4 team playoff yet going into the expanded playoff this season. Just not a great deal similar to me.

Linebacker Play & Injury Status of Wylie

Same with the DEs IMO.
Agree. However, I think PSU's defensive game plan was to pressure USC's QB. he didn't perform well under pressure against Minny. Lincoln anticipated this and put together a game plan designed to exploit the areas behind the DE and OLB. So it made our DE's look really bad but they were just doing what they were supposed to be doing. Just my opinion, of course.

Thoughts after watching the replay

Agree. PSU will have to be fortunate for a victory. Need to force some turnovers and somehow limit Smith and Egbuka and keep their outstanding RBs from explosive runs.
On offense, PSU has to have sustained drives that all end with points.
Easily the most challenging game of the year from what their offense can produce.
The fans HAVE TO bring noise that causes disruptions for the OSU offense.

As fans we can talk about the OSU game but for the team it's Wisconsin, Wisconsin, Wisconsin.
It would be nice to have this as a night game White Out. Still amazed we are stuck playing this game at high noon.

You bring up turnovers. Yes, that could be an equalizer. Their QB Howard had an 80% completion rate vs Oregon. He played a great game. Forget about the late slide. He may be their skill guy weak link but that is because everyone else is a top 3 round NFL guy not because he is an average player. The kid looked very good vs Oregon.

They lost their OT to injury so maybe that gives us a bit of an opening as in they can't run or pass protect quite as well. Don't know.

They are just so lethal on offense that I have trouble seeing us slowing them down. They have two NFL backs and two first round NFL WRs. Try to stop the run they pass all over you. Focus on stopping the pass and Henderson or Judkins busts one. Pick your poison. Allen will have to devise his best game plan ever to slow them down. And he can't just wait until halftime to make adjustments, if he does we will already have given up 30 by halftime. AK will have to keep them guessing. More confident that AK can dial up some things to inflict some damage on their D. They won't have an answer for Warren. Not sure Allen can come up with anything to materially slow them down.

I don't understand why this isn't always an option. Take the NBA. In no case should a foul be done on purpose. Give the team that was fouled the option to keep the possession instead of having to shoot free throws.

I think it's a travesty that in BB intentionally violating the rules actually becomes an integral part of a close basketball in college and in the NBA. An incredible, close contest devolves into this dull activity of stopping play and then hinging the outcome on tired players shooting FTs. How dumb is that.

Absolutely teams should be able to take possession with a fresh shot clock instead of going to the line. Another way to help the problem would be to automatically award 3 FTs for fouls in the last 5 minutes -- that way the refs don't have to make a judgment call about an intentional foul. Awarding a 1-and-1 where a missed free throw generally awards possession to the fouling team is a travesty -- no wonder games turn into foulfests at the end.

But I suspect the people who run basketball won't change because they like the FT shooting contest -- it's like its own stage of the game, like the endgame of a chess match. I hate it but I'm not really a BB fan.

Though I'm not a fan of what Head Coach did..though it was a brilliant call as they were trying to hold onto their lead..frankly..it also shows how really good this Ohio State Team really is..going a cross Country..very talented Oregon team..hostile environment..record crowd...Ducks Coach pulling out all the stops to secure a win..and they just barely did..I think Ohio State beats anyone in the Country on a neutral field...for our game against Buckeyes..we will not have the same advantage as Oregon ie Time Zone difference...we will need our crowd to be even crazier than the one Ohio state saw in Eugene...and we will need to be flawless...thats the only way I see us winning...

I think so too. Ohio State almost won and weren't nearly playing their A game, wasn't nearly playing the way they will be at the end of the year. Just Burks by himself getting burned for 14 points -- he's a great player and that won't happen again. Howard will be a much better QB with a little more experience. The Ohio State D-line is incredibly athletic but they were overpursuing and out of position -- that will get fixed.

Why Wisconsin terrifies me (trap game)

The afterglow of Saturday is finally fading a bit, and like most of you, I'm analyzing our chances after the bye and beyond. And history tells us to be afraid of PSU's performance in this very position.

2017--Lose heartbreaker in Columbus. Hardly drop in the polls, but we go to a less talented #24 MSU team the next week, endure an ungodly storm delay, and fritter the game away. Most talented Franklin team wasted.

2018--Lose heartbreaker to OSU in Happy Valley. Get a bye. Come out flat after a bye week against unranked MSU team and lose again. No more top 10 ranking that season for us...

2019--8-0 and ranked #3 in the country. Coming off bye week, we travel to #17 Minnesota and lay an egg.

2021--start a solid 5-0 and ranked #4. Travel to #3 Iowa and lose a heartbreaker. Bye week...and come home and lose the worst game in PSU history, 9OT against a terrible Illinois team.

Three AWFUL performances that wasted our potential for the season coming right after a bye week...and all four seasons saw us lose to teams we should have beaten. I hope Franklin has learned from these trials and is determined to keep his players sharp physically and mentally because this road game to Wisconsin is by far our biggest TRAP game of the season
I hear what you are saying and agree we need to be focused for this game. Wisky can pose some problems for us if we are not careful. The examples you cited don't fit perfectly with this season.

'17 and '18 we were coming off a gut wrenching loss. This year we come off a big win. Different team psyche.

'19 is probably the best comparison but we were not as good as this year (especially if Allar continues to play well, eliminates interceptions) and Minny was better that year than Wisky is this year.

'21 coming off bad loss and didn't have a healthy QB.

My thought is if this team gained confidence and maturity through the USC game and specifically if Allar can use that game as a springboard to continue playing at a high level then we should be in good shape. The defense needs to come ready to play from the kickoff.

As a now "Old Head" who was a senior with you and also at that game- remember that it was Blair Thomas' coming out party of sorts as he had a big kick return. I think that there are many solid posts about similarities to other top teams like 82/94/05/16. Here are my memories of the 86 team that do and don't apply now:

Do:
*Stud running backs: Dozier/Thomas then: Nick/Kaytron now
*Solid- if not publicly recognized O Lines
*Finding ways to Win- including some games that maybe we didn't "deserve" to: Cincinnati/Maryland then and USC/ possibly a Wisky or Minny down the road
*Both WR Rooms were generally average- no Kenny Jacksons or Bobby Engrams on either 86 or now. Ray Roundtree was very good and an NFL player in 86- likely better than anyone on current depth chart
*There was a solid win on the road against a Traditional Power who was in a down cycle where maybe we didn't play our best but won: @ Notre Dame then (I was there too) and @ USC last week

Don't:
*John Shaffer today would be called a "Game Manager" who was a leader and winner but doesn't compare athletically to Drew in any way
*Missing are the true blockers and power backs that 86 had: Steve Smith and Tim Manoa- but that is sort of the H Back role now (and #71 in motion : )
*Tyler Warren is at a completely other level than our 86 guys. Brian Siverling- who dominated me in IM Basketball- was solid and more old school- it is a different position now but there is no comparison re: productivity
*Overall maturity on D- The 5th year senior comment is dead on- but we also had guys who knew and understood their roles. With a new DC and a few transfers/young players there could be some "learning curves" that kill us down the line. Like many- I watched Tony Rojas get lost and overrun plays multiple times last week that Shane Conlan would not do
*Our interior D line with Bob White and Pete Curkendall just felt tougher than where we are today. Durant is fantastic- but when we get into some of the other guys the trust factor isn't yet there. BTW I can still see Pete running away from our North Endzone seats where I sat with my Dad with his fumble (weird interception?) recovery sprint to help turn around the Terps game- which nonetheless went to the last possession/4th down play by Maryland which fell incomplete in our near endzone

STILL TBD:
*The "Signature Win"- Then @ Bama 23-3. Great afternoon spent watching on the old "projection" TV in The Lions Den.

Hopefully 11/2 will be this teams' version of that W vs OSU to push us into the upper echelon!

Go State!

I've been beating the same be-careful-of-Wisconsin drum in a couple threads here since the big win last Saturday. The Badgers are a good team and they'll have some obvious things going for them starting with home field.

That said, there's one huge difference between the painful history that you list and this year's Wisconsin game coming off the bye: most of your listed games preceding the trap were heartbreaking losses...and we just never recovered mentally. I mean, football has a huge mental component. Your frame of mind coming into games can make a crucial difference. We weren't mentally ready to play the games you mention.

As for the 2019 Minnesota game, I'm not sure we laid an egg. Minnesota was undefeated going in, and the game took place in their stadium. In fact, we would have beaten them if not for the phantom pick call that negated a TD that would have won the game late for us.

But coming back to this year, we're coming off a big win, and the way we won the game was almost as important as that we did win it. We're going to have confidence. We're going to be on a high. And unlike in 2017, 2018, and 2021, I think we're going to be mentally ready to play. Even so, don't get me wrong: I think you make good points and express valid concerns.
