OT: "Old" people stories

OK - here's a wrestling story with a really bizarre coincidence that still amazes me. Bear with me here because it requires a little bit of background history to understand the whole story.

Way back in 1977, after I had graduated from Penn State, I started my first engineering job with General Dynamics in San Diego. I became pretty close friends with one of the guys in my group at work who happened to be a Pitt graduate. (Not relevant to this story) One day he came to work and told us he had been tapped for jury duty. After sitting through a trial for about a week, he returned to work and said he found the experience so interesting that he decided to get a law degree. So he worked out a plan to make it happen and eventually left the job to attend law school. We kept in touch for a number of years, but after a while, we both moved too many times and lost track of each other.

OK, now fast forward to 2004. I had moved to WA for a while but ended up back in San Diego again. While in WA, I made some friends through wrestling. One of them was the head coach at a HS a little East of Seattle and his son had become a pretty decent wrestler. In 2004, I saw that he was going for his 3rd state title, so I decided to go to WA for the weekend of the state tournament and watch his son wrestle. I went ahead and booked a flight and made arrangements with a friend for a place to stay.

At the beginning of the same week for the state tournament, for some odd reason I started thinking about my old friend from our days in San Diego, so I did a quick Internet search for him on Google. Sure enough, I got a hit and it turned out he was a partner in a law firm in Seattle! The web page for his law firm listed his email contact so I sent him a quick note hoping he would respond. Sure enough, I got a quick reply with the same humor I was used to hearing from him in the good old days. So we quickly traded a few emails catching up with each other and then I told him that I was actually going to be in the Seattle area the coming weekend to see a friend's son wrestle for his 3rd state title. He replied that was interesting because his wife's nephew was going to be wrestling in the same tournament, and he thought there was a chance that his wife's nephew knew my friend's son. Well it turned out that we were both talking about the same guy! My friend had married my other friend's sister about 15 years earlier and we never had any idea of the connection!

Needless to say, that weekend turned into a really special occasion. All of us from both families had a great time seeing each other and my friend's son did win his 3rd state championship. This happened 20 years ago and I'm still in awe every time I think about it.

I keep two quotes posted on the wall by my desk at work that are largely inspired by what happened.

"Coincidence is God's way of remaining anonymous." -- Albert Einstein

"Too coincidental to be a coincidence." -- Yogi Berra
Okay, here goes. Short version. While on my way out of grad school at Iowa in 1992 I finally met a girl that I had previously dubbed to my classmates “the girl of my dreams.” We dated until I rolled out of town while she did a semester at Laval in Quebec City. Up until then it seriously looked like she might be the one. She told me of her dream to ride horses out west. Mine was to go fly fishing in the same areas.

Fast forward to 1995-6 when internet search was gaining speed. I did an AOL (laugh, I do too!) search on her and all indications were she married a guy with a distinctive last name that was easy to remember.

Fast forward to 1999 when Dad and I decided to take a fly fishing trip to Missoula. As we were waiting for our guide on about Day 4 I hear a guy at the fly shop counter say he was was there to meet his guide as well. When asked his name I heard him say that very distinctive last name. I made small talk and worked in that I believed that an old acquaintance married a guy with the same last name. He confirmed that I was indeed fact to face with her husband, and he was doing exactly the same I was there to do. She was out there … riding horses.

OSU player not suspended for 1st half

If there is precedence for this type of call being reversed, which I don’t know, then I can accept it because that penalty has gotten totally out of control. However, if this never has happened before, then I have a big problem with it.

I have no idea why a player is suspended for this type of call if it only is the first penalty like this called on the player; perhaps it should be a two strikes and you’re out penalty.
Ya only osu or Michigan gets this reversed like this. I don’t think it should have been called in first place though

Guest picker for College Gameday crew?

I'd like to see SuePa but ESPN doesn't have the courage. What about The Big Uglies?
That's not a great idea. Loved Joe, love Sue but we need to move on. Also not her style to be seeking attention like that or be in the limelight. And can you imagine the questions...."Aside from trying hard to besmirch and ruin the legacy of your late husband, Sue, what do you think of ESPN?

If Indiana continues with their large margins of victory and their loss to OSU is less than a TD I think they are seeded higher than 1 loss PSU.
Indiana isn't going to get as much respect as us. It just isn't realistic. Just like Georgia is going to remain the top 1 loss team followed by Ohio State--talent matters.

So, it was called in the field, confirmed by replay and yet it is now thrown out? That's bull.
It may be bull, but it was totally predictable.

There are two sets of rules in this league. We all know that. USC has found out the hard way.

Maybe they'll review the obvious DPI that killed a critical 4th-quarter Nebraska possession but wasn't called.

And Ryan Day's flagrant violation of running like a madman onto the field and flinging his headset onto the ground.

But don't hold your breath for that.

The message has gone out loud and clear to the zebras on Saturday.

The irony is that when the Sacred Cows have to play a post-season game with genuinely neutral refs, they're at a disadvantage.

The only national championship the league has won legitimately during the last 20-plus years is Ohio State's in 2014. Michigan's last year was gained by cheating during the regular season.

So Lando, let's play a little scenario here.

No Allar and OSU jacks us by 3 TDs. We win the rest of our games and Allar is healthy by the playoff time, actually sooner and plays in our last couple games or whatever.

Indiana plays OSU to the final gun let's say they miss a gw FG to lose at the horn. IU wins all their other remaining games

Are we seeded higher than Indiana because Allar is now full strength?

And we are seeded higher than other teams vying for that #6 seed?

I thought it was shitty call and a good football play. Not sure why the review didn’t fix it. College Refs suck

IMO--yes, we'd be at worst the 6 seed. Indiana would be, at best, the 8th seed.
Indiana's schedule is really really bad outside of Ohio State. Like really bad.

The playoff committee used FSU injury and opt outs to drop them from the playoffs last year, so I'd say that it would be a factor this year.
Only if PSU loses a second game and Allar is not able to play in the playoffs.
The issue the playoff committee with FSU last year was they lost their starter, unable to play rest if year and their back-up did not play well leading up to the playoffs.

No--the opt outs happened after the selections were made
They dropped them because DJU wasn't going to be back
If Allar misses the Ohio State game then comes back strong it's basically like that lose never happen
If he doesn't come back then it matters
Let's be real though--FSU wasn't a top 8 team last year even with DJU. They had a nice season but it was all smoke and mirrors. Much like Miami this year

No comments on Drew cussing out a fan?

Or in how engaged he was on the sideline in the second half? Drew's gotta ignore the cat calls. This isn't good, IMHO, although I like the spunk.

Depends on what was said to him. Now if someone had called his mother or sister the C word then I think he would be justified to respond. Anything less than that and he needs to walk away.
