Oregon OSU ending getting NCAA review

I think it's a travesty that in BB intentionally violating the rules actually becomes an integral part of a close basketball in college and in the NBA. An incredible, close contest devolves into this dull activity of stopping play and then hinging the outcome on tired players shooting FTs. How dumb is that.

Absolutely teams should be able to take possession with a fresh shot clock instead of going to the line. Another way to help the problem would be to automatically award 3 FTs for fouls in the last 5 minutes -- that way the refs don't have to make a judgment call about an intentional foul. Awarding a 1-and-1 where a missed free throw generally awards possession to the fouling team is a travesty -- no wonder games turn into foulfests at the end.

But I suspect the people who run basketball won't change because they like the FT shooting contest -- it's like its own stage of the game, like the endgame of a chess match. I hate it but I'm not really a BB fan.
Hate basketball and this is a huge reason. And cut the timeouts to two.

But will never happen because the networks want the commercial breaks.

It’s a Penn State World

I've gotten the We Are greeting in Iceland, Israel, France and most recently Ireland.. It is pretty much a sure thing at this point.. if you wear PSU gear while abroad..
Got one from a guy at an Inverness Scotland bar last month. He was dancing with a blow up doll/woman with his ex-wife’s face taped to the head. He yelled “we are” when he saw my PSU wrestling hat. I had to think twice, but, after assessing the situation I gave a hearty PENN STATE. During a band break he opined on the advantages of a blow up wife.

Why Wisconsin terrifies me (trap game)

Great seasons in '05 and '08 that left us wondering what could have been. The '05 loss to Michigan was brutal as was the Iowa loss in '08. We should have gone to the BCS title game in '08, no way we should have lost to Iowa. One of the top "bad" or heartbreaking losses in Paterno's career.
We then got exposed in the Rose Bowl as USC passed all over us. I wonder if we would have fared better versus Florida in the BCS title game since they did not have the passing game USC had.

In '05, even if we had beaten Michigan I am pretty sure Joe would have again, incredibly, been aced out of playing for the NC despite an undefeated season.
Yet people continually say Joe was over the hill, washed up, old fashioned, out of date, behind the times, too old…….

Linebacker Play & Injury Status of Wylie

Elsdon most definitely does NOT have to play. Kobe King should be on the field 95% of the time and give me Robinson or Speca in a backup role all day.
43 is gone (good riddance) after this year. He's taking away valuable snaps away from Speca. Talent separation (Speca is way more athletic) is not far off from each other. Play the kid!

Aiden Hutchinson

I retired after last year with only a few near misses. However I was begged into doing our first game this year- my replacrment had a wedding to attend and didn't realize it was Friday night until Thursday afternoon.

A 3 star rb was running hard towards me and I backed up my customary few yards- but then one of my current students delivered a personal foul late hit and they both landed at my shins....

Exhale. # Spectator from here out!
If you have a presence on the sidelines during games for long enough .....

Wasn't Joe injured on the sideline against Wiscy(?) and ended up with a broken leg?

Some of everything and more.

Marsteller's family situation was the kind of thing you wouldn't wish on anyone. He seems determined to raise a better family than he experienced. Enough said there.

I don't recall if the home visit were at his home or on neutral territory (such as at the school). In any case, lots of people can hold it together for a few hours. And IIRC his self-destructive behavior grew in his SR year, at some point after schools visited him.

Marsteller has said that he felt enormous pressure to go to PSU, both external and self-imposed, and gave into that pressure. With an opportunity to reconsider, he did.

Leaving the family was a factor, but his decision was more about escaping the shadow of own legend. OKST made a ton of sense -- he'd be far from PA, it was a top program with a great coach.

OTOH, the party culture at OKST was the worst possible environment for him. But there probably was no good program for him until he bottomed out.
Living in the area, rumors were starting to swirl regarding his substance demons his sophomore year of high school. We all know how it played out from there. Gotta give him a ton of credit for turning his life around and salvaging what he could of his wrestling talent.

Next National Champ.

I find all this discussion of where all the lucky losers, you know the ones who didn't win there conference, get seeded for the national championship "playoff". It's just a nice, entertaining, money producing tournament.

Why should team A who beat team B to win there conference have to play and beat team B again?

I'll watch it and enjoy the games but I'll never think the lucky losers should ever get the opportunity to win a championship.

Case in point, the NY Mets this year who came in third but could advance to the WS. Not likely but possible they could beat LA who had the best record in the NL.
In no American sport is a team required to win a division or sport to make the playoff.
MLB is the only sport I'd ever get on-board with that because they play 162 games.
If it was just about winning a conference teams should join weaker conferences to make life easier. You're actually rewarding teams for playing weaker schedules
Also, one game means nothing. Say Oregon losses to Ohio State in the CCG. They split. Why would they be out?
I've yet to hear even a decent argument for only conference winners. I think it's just nonsense from people being angry an 11-1 Ohio State was correctly picked over us at 11-2.
One game doesn't prove a team is better. Oregon won by a point at home. A point at home. There's no definitive answer there.

I don't know Chance Marsteller, but I am very proud of what he has accomplished in his life since his first year at LHU. It takes a very strong person and support system to claw your way back from where he was in life. He has a lot to give back to young people and does it every day.
The depth he reached was I think as close to bottom as he could go and remain with us. The effort to successfully surface from that depth was herculean. Someone gave him unshakable support and his mental and emotional strength had to have been other worldly.
God bless that kid and whoever it was who had his back. One day at a time keep on keeping on.

58-19 during those years. Following 26-33 from 2000-2004. Believe me, I loved Joe, but it wasn’t his peak.
Certainly not Joe's peak - but the following 5 years were not too bad for an old man.

And that may be mostly a testament to how his assistant coaches and players felt about him as much as his coaching abilities at that stage of his career

RIP Coach ....

It's called unsportsman like conduct. Easy call.
The problem with that is it becomes a judgement call and we all hate judgment calls because of the inconsistency. An easy solution would be to expand the rule that a Too Many Men on the Field penalty occurring in the 5 minutes of a half the team has the option of resetting the clock to the pre-snap time. So if the ball was snapped at 1:35 the game clock will be reset back to 1:35 with the 5 yard penalty assessed.

That has to be one of the most brilliant war sequences ever filmed. I’ve probably watched it several dozen times. And take a look at some of the actors in the scenes:
Martin Sheen
Larry Fishburn
R Lee Ermey
Robert Duvall

Robert Duvall is awesome. Two of the most iconic lines from films came from him in that scene. “Charlie don’t surf!” and “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”
