BTW, I attending a pro women's volleyball game yesterday

as the Columbus Fury hosted the Atlanta Vibe. I have never followed volleyball other than my daughter's age 12 games. My son, who lives in Columbus, plays Volleyball 4 to 5 games per week and is entering a state tournament. It was fun sitting with him and having him explain the game to me. I was surprised as they have, my guess, 5k to 6k fans. Almost all of the lower bowl was full except the end zones.

This was their 10th game. the league is backed by some big names including Tom Brady.

The gals were awesome. Very exciting and very athletic. Fury (I kept calling them "furries" to piss of my son) has a gal who is 6-6 named Rosenthal. She is the first sub. Columbus won in 4 sets. Afterward, they had an autograph session. The gals were absolutely beaming when they came out and the fans gave them an ovation. It was fun to see and great for these gals.

six foot six, Jenna Rosenthal

3 questions

3 questions

1 I don't have access to the rules at the moment. What's the scoring sequence for stall warnings in college? In NFHS - so high school etc - it is 1st warning no points, 2nd and 3rd 1 point, 4th 2 points, 5th match terminated. Same in college?

2 I see non Penn State fans in YouTube comment sections claiming Penn State is the most stall-happy team. On a scale of 1-10, how happy does this absurdity make you? I'm at a solid 6 out of 10. I really try not to focus on what bitter, jealous people say because our fans, like our wrestlers, should focus on being grateful for what we have but that is just SO hilarious 😂

3 was breaking the all time scoring record in your list of possible accomplishments when Cael took this job? It wasn't in mine. I truly can't believe we did this, boys. What a beautiful day to be a Nittany Lion. Thanks to everyone, including you all, for our community

Thank goodness for Ironhead!

The ESPN clowns were insufferable. I watched the the ESPN broadcast with the sound muted and synced with the radio. I tried watching the bouts later with the ESPN announcers, but found deletion the better option. Some of the student announcer teams we made fun of would have been an improvement. At least they addressed what was happening on the mat.

Rant over.

You wrestling guys are insane

In four days just the three main threads have over 94 pages….and counting. Over 3,850 comments……and counting. Over 380,000 page views….and counting. And countless other threads.

How can you watch the matches and just read the comments? And no way you can watch the matches, read the comments AND put in your own comments!

Like someone else said…. You have to be AI bots.

Seriously, love your passion. I enjoy wrestling but nowhere near your addiction levels😉. And I have trouble reading it all as you have your own dialect of English.

My area didn’t have wrestling. My only experience was at PSU…. a kid on my floor had been a very good high school wrestler but opted to concentrate on his studies. Many weekends, after a few beers, we would wrestle in the elevator area. I was bigger and stronger…..5’10” and 180 while he was 5’7” and about 160….. so I could muscle him around a bit but he knew his moves.

Several times I thought I had had him in serious jeopardy and then suddenly the world would spin in three directions at once and I found myself flat on my back. I would ask him how the hell he did it and he would just smile and walk away.

A fascinating sport combining strength , skill, endurance, quickness, balance, brains, and guts.

Dayshaun Burnett

This kid is massive steal for us, & has a chance of being truly special for us once he bulks up to 250lbs. There’s arguably nothing he can’t do on a football field on a the defensive side of the ball. Can’t wait to see this kid in action. He reminds me a-lot of Dylan Stewart who we missed out on obviously.

Thought Borroughs repeated comments that there was way too much uncalled stalling going on were very insightful.

And telling....

Came right out and said that the amount of edge-wrestling taking place was being encouraged by the lack of penalty for doing so - which he clearly thought was wrong and 180 degrees unfair for the more aggressive wrestler. Any wrestler constantly giving ground should be hit for "passivity" (which is called "stalling" in Folk).

We're gonna make the damn playoffs!!!!!!!!!!!

As-long-as the passing game shows marked improvement from last season I do believe we have the talent to finally make the playoffs this season in an expanded field. Nolan Rucci, & AJ Harris I’d argue will be the key reasons why we end-up making the playoffs this season.

If Harris ends-up being a True Number 1 corner, & Rucci a capable starter at tackle I believe that’ll be enough to at-least enable us to Win 10 games, & help propel us into a playoff spot.

Team Points Prediction

Pick the 10 Champions Contest Winners

@98lberEating2Lunches
@not so fast my friend
@Lyons212
@PV_lion

Each picked seven champions correctly with one of those champions earning an extra point for being a 5-8 seed.

Please see @backdrft76 to collect your prizes.

Shout out to @wrestlingfan22 for also correctly picking seven champions, but no extra points for picking a 5-8 seed (although they were the only one to correctly pick Carr at 165).

Shout out also to @PSUeng for being the only person to correctly pick Henson at 149.

Final shout out to @mattu12 for being one of only two (along with @98lberEating2Lunches ) to correctly pick Figueroa at 125.

WrestleSim 2024 Predictions

Below are the results from the base simulation followed by a simulation with some of the results fixed for PSU's top guys. Generally I don't like to fix any results but year after year Cael's teams do statistically better than expected. This is because he can't coach. Because he can't coach, his all star recruits wrestle harder in practice to make up for his coaching deficiencies. Pure and simple logic. With Brooks, Kerk, and MM fixed to get to the finals (but not assured of winning) you get results given in the bottom screen captures. These are based on 1,000 realizations that take about 4 minutes of computer time.

BASE

2024-Base-Outputs.png

In the base results PSU is a very heavy favorite and NC State is the clear leader for second with a very small chance of an upset. A large number of teams could finish anywhere from 3rd to 10th. Penn State has an expected score of 143 with a 3% chance of beating the 170 record (base simulation). This is mostly due to Carter Starocci wrestling like a #9 seed statistically. However, if he is close to 100% healthy I would not want to be anyone in the 174 lb bracket. The pale horse is coming (my prediction).

Based on the results with some of the top PSU guys fixed to make the finals, PSU is expected to score 165 points with a 32% chance of beating the 170 record. If Starocci is fully healthy the record could very well fall. But 125 is not going to be normal where generally 6-7 wrestlers place around their seed at any given weight. Looking at the results there were so many coin flips between top 20 guys. I have faith in Davis but any guy at 125 could unexpectedly go 1-2. Lower points coming from him would likely be made up by Starocci getting more giving around the same probability of beating the record for Penn State.

The delta between 3rd and 9th is only 8 points! SERENITY NOW! Last year NC State and VT scored an average of 11 points BELOW expected and the top Big Ten teams were an average of 15 points ABOVE expected so keep that in mind. Some of you have talked about the problems with the seeding criteria like conference place where you are in a conference with maybe only one other top 20 guy at your weight and you wrestle two matches to win compared to one with eight or nine. Underseeding primarily punishes the overseeded wrestlers. They get dumped to difficult positions in the backside brackets. My advice is to look where you think your guy is too high, that is the most likely one to get in trouble. One thing is for sure it is going to be a scrap for the three trophies behind first.

FIXED

2024-Fixed-Outputs.png

Do we need a probabilistic model to get the results this year? I think not. In fact the numerical results are summarized nicely by the following figure:

The Dunning-Kruger effect runs HOT in some wrestling circles!!!! Keep applying that lemon juice my friends.
