Can you recall your experience of running into Joe Paterno on or off campus and what you said?

The only say "one-on-one" time I really ever had with Joe was about 20 years ago when my son and I were walking from the Lasch building into mid-campus. My son and I were walking in the evening and no-one was around, and as we turned the corner, here came Joe Paterno right at us. We said "Hi Joe". He turned, looked at us and said, " Hi, how are you fellows doing". Now I know this was not a major 1 on 1 dialogue, but it has stuck in both my son's and my mind for all these years. It also helped my son decide that he too would go to Penn State. It is amazing that such a chance, brief meeting was so impactful in our lives. Was this the God-like football culture that Freeh portrayed amongst Penn Staters? Call it what you want, but Joe was a great man, and I will always defend Joe as long as I have to!

The sad state of beer drinking in the US

The good news: Light beer sales share is declining.
The bad news, these are the top selling beers in US in 2014:
1. Bud Light $6.1B
2. Coors Light $2.2B
3. Bud $2.1B
4. Miller Lite $1.9B
5. Corona $1.3B
6. Natural Lite $1.1B
7. Mich Ultralight $.9B
8. Busch Lite $.8B
9. Modelo $.7B
10. Heineken $.7B
So in top 10, 6 light "beers", 3 semi-light "beers" and one European beer that is usually stale by the time it reaches the US.
No wonder Yuengling (at # 20) is considered a "craft beer".

Baltimore Deputy police commissioner Jerry Rodriguez stated:

“We had officers in a high-crime area known to have high narcotic incidents. The officers believe that Mr. Gray was immediately involved or recently involved in criminal activity and decided to make contact.”

Of course after Freddie Gray’s arrest, we’re all familiar with what occurred afterwards. In the meantime, it appears that thugs are burning Baltimore down for a felon and a drug dealer.

PSU Women's LAX 2nite on BTN, 7 pm EDT ...

taking on Maryland, at Maryland. The winner of the game will end the regular season in 1st place in the B1G women's LAX conference, and get the top seed in the conference tournament.

PSU has really been on a roll of late. I believe they are 12-3, and have won their last 9 games. Their latest game was against NW, who they defeated at NW.

Heading into 2nite's game, Maryland is ranked #1 in the country, and PSU is ranked #8.

Any time you take on the #1 team in the country, it's a tough matchup. If I recall correctly, Maryland was rated #1 in the country before the season started, and has not dropped from that perch all season long.

Judge: Sandusky may move forward with appeal
Wednesday, April 22 2015, 03:42 PM EDT
By: Marc Stempka

BELLEFONTE, Pa. -- Convicted child sex abuser Jerry Sandusky may move forward with a new appeal, according to an order issued by the judge presiding over his case.

Lawyers met in a judge's chambers in Centre County Wednesday related to a new appeal in Sandusky's case.

Judge John Cleland held the closed-door hearing at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte. The hearing is related to Sandusky's Post Conviction Relief Act hearing, which is another form of appeal, and to address schedules for future proceedings.

Following the hearing, Cleland issued an order permitting Sandusky's defense team to move forward and file on or before May 6 an amended PCRA petition. Cleland ordered the amended petition and any exhibits in support of the amended petition will be unsealed, while the original PCRA petition will remained sealed.

Sandusky's attorney filed a PCRA appeal early April. Within 30 days of filing the amended petition, the Commonwealth will be able to file their response, Cleland ordered.

Cleland also wrote Sandusky's lawyers consult with the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office if there's any information they plan to include in the amended petition that could be subject to grand jury secrecy rules.

The Pennsylvania Supreme Court last year declined to review Sandusky's 45-count conviction in 2012 for child sexual abuse. Sandusky is serving a sentence of 30 to 60 years and was not present at Wednesday's hearing. Cleland has over seen Sandusky's proceedings in Centre County.

The narrative constructed by Louis Freeh was that PSU FB

had grown into such a colossus, economically and politically, that it was able to cover up criminal activity by Jerry Sandusky for years and years.

That narrative was false, but the truth is in some ways even worse. PSU itself is that colossus. The BoT had at least as much knowledge of Jerry's proclivities as Joe did, and understood the implications better. And the BoT is protected by powerful political allies, even today. Yudichak's bill will re-orient some of the power from SC to Harrisburg, and they will fight that with all they've got. Still not a word from Jake Corman, by the way, on whether he supports the bill. Is Jake going to protect them?

The recent BS from the PSAA is just astonishing. The level of arrogance and entitlement is off the charts. Williams is a file clerk in a top level position, and WAYYY too defensive to head up an organization of this size. Why is he there? Because he played the PSU inside game for a lot of years and got to the top.

The usual response of a bureaucracy to attacks from without is to increase staff. Witness the growth of the AD's staff in the last couple years. They are bringing in less money, and paying out huge fines, and seeing their revenue docked, and the response is to pile on more employees to further reduce the amount of funds available to run sports programs.

The AA reminds me of my impression of some of the student government "leaders" I shared the campus with in the late 70s. The ones I knew were resume building apple polishers. They no more gave a damn about the issues I cared about than Roger Williams cares about your concerns today.

To some extent, the outside critics of PSU, who have long lambasted PSU for arrogance, and whom I have long dismissed as jealous fools, were right. Now we get that arrogant BS turned on us and we can see it for what it is.

It makes me sick. They have driven a number of us away. If this cannot be fixed with dramatic change in how the AA and BoT operate, then I am likely done with PSU altogether.

Flashback to a fundamental question: what is Corbett covering up?

Now that Tommy is out of office, there's been little activity regarding his role in the whole Sandusky debacle. What is he covering up? Why did he want Freeh to white-wash his involvement in the whole Sandusky mess?

What was your favorite cafeteria food when living in your dorm?

I lived in dorms my entire time ay Penn State. I started in the East Halls, then ended up in Beaver Hall in the South Halls area the rest of the way. I ate most of my meals at the South Halls cafeteria. I know most students didn't like the food, but I for one liked it. I guess back then, I wasn't all that choosey as money was tight! I was there in the early 70's. The 2 meals that stood out to me were the Swiss Steak and the macaroni with meat sauce (Beef-A-Roni). Then on some weekend nights, going to the Train Station (not far from McClanahans) and having a Turkey Sub was a real treat! What are your recollections?

AG Kane fires head of criminal appeals, James Barker (is he Fina's mole?)

Interesting development (did Kane find Fina's mole?): AG Kane fires head of criminal appeals, James Barker, who testified at the investigative grand jury looking into Kane. Armed agents took him from office.

James Barker is the same guy who read the JVP, Curley, & Schultz GJ testimony into the record at 12/16/11 hearing p173 (thanks to @JmmW on twitter for finding this fact!). Link to 12/16/11 prelim.

That's a heck of a coincidence...perhaps Barker may have purposely mis-read of some that testimony to have the record help Fina's case (specifically Joe's "it was a sexual nature" part)??? I wouldn't put anything past him....

Why does Men's Lax Stink?

I've seen the last couple of televised men's lax games. This team stinks and its record reflects that. It doesn't seem like the team has been very good in recent memory.

How is this possible? Pennsylvania every year is producing some of the best players in the country. But, Penn State doesn't end up with them. In fact, the PSU team seems to be surprisingly light on Pennsylvania players. This is kind of like Minnesota hockey fielding a team of guys from Illinois and stinking.

The quality of the team and the failure of recruiting in PSU's own backyard seem like problems to me.

POLL: Hottest 90's alt music girls!

Always love a little nostalgia on a Friday! Thought about this while buying up a bunch of 90's music on iTunes this morning. Was at Penn State from 93-97, and music was a big part of my life then. I remember going to Blue Train Records for midnight launches and walking campus with my discman. Anyway, I loved a lot of 90's female performers and was mostly into alternative then. These are the girls I remember most (and make me wonder what the hell is going on with today's music - wow I'm old.). Write in's welcome!

FC/OT: 'Going Clear' - anyone watch this on HBO???

Documentary about Scientology that is just over the top fascinating. I'm about a half hour in, and seeing Tom Cruise's speech at their annual convention just made me cringe. The testimonial from former members is just unbelievable, and the footage of LRH peddling his science fiction as religion is weird as hell. Here's the most published author in the world cherry picking his SF ideas and turning them into a religion. The guy is on record as saying 'the only way to make money is to start a religion,' and that's exactly what he did. And the key to their success and financial influence is their priceless tax exempt status.

You can see why celebrities are so into it though; this is the one religion that is all about YOU, and how to make YOUR LIFE better. And give you super powers. Praise Xenu! Sigh - how did anyone fall for this hokey BS?

the goldbergs "the lost boy" episode last week (spoiler)

what a great "right of passage" episode this week. Aside from a couple of great scenes where mom bedazzles the oldest son's Flyer's jersey, is the story of the youngest son and dad who go to a Phillies game at old Veterans Memorial Stadium.

ten year old has to go to the bathroom after drinking a 32 ouncer and Dad, thinking he's old enough and not wanting to miss any of the game, sends him alone. Kid finds the bathroom a horror story and goes up a floor thinking it is the higher priced area and will be nicer. As a result, kid gets lost. He can't find his dad, dad can't find him.

I've been on both sides. As a kid, I got lost at a Penn St./Pitt game at Three Rivers. I found the family but remember being half scared to death. As a Dad, I remember doing the bumper boats on a cool day with my two sons and got wet. We had just enough credits to go on the go carts that only held three and my youngest son was too small to go. I left him, about six at the time, near the railing while I raced with my older boy (age 8). When we got done, the youngest was gone. It only took five minutes to find him but those were the longest five minutes of my life. And, when I found him, he was freezing (from being wet) and crying. Some older lady was trying to comfort him and help him find me. To this day, I feel horrible about it. But, I consider it a right of passage for the kid and being a father.
