Happy Valley Crisis: Business Is Dismal, Penn State Facing Comprehensive Furloughs, Athletics’ AD Pay -20% & Pegula Staff Pay - Whacked By $50%

Visited your Happy Valley recently. Chatted with some of our Business Contacts. We love SC. Downtown Area. Business District Boss said that he’s extremely worried that 60 - 70% of Business’s will go under! Unless they get substantial $$$$.

Rapid Transit did renew their lease — Landlord was sympathetic— RT had lost > $650K for the year! Bars & Restaurants have been financially decimated...

Oh, I had a dream, it seemed I stood alone, And the Veil of all the years goes, Goes sinking from my eyes like a stone...

You know when Phil Esten was at PSU, He badgered Sandy endlessly about dumping some of the non-revenue sports. She did however, implement a $20% AD’s cut in 2020. Concessions Boss Ebeling was laid off in August, IT cut some Staff permanently. However, Lash Project is going full speed ahead.

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young, In a world of magnets & miracles, Our thoughts strayed constantly & without boundary, Running before time took our Dreams Away, To a life consumes by Slow Decay.

The Biggest Current Rumor At PSU is that All PSU Units & Departments Will Have Comprehensive Furloughs by the end of January.

PSU is also implanting a comprehensive CO-VID Testing Project. Student have been sent Testing Kits & all students will be tested 2 Times.

OT: Helping an alcoholic family member

Yesterday, @Bondist posted a sad request for advice on how to help his son. I once started a very long thread about how to help an alcoholic friend and I suspect that @Bondist's post got lost in the Dry January thread. This is just me making sure this gets the attention it deserves from the board. Thank you for your indulgence.

@Bondist, I tried to post something to help yesterday but couldn't come up with the right words. I hope this helps. God Bless.

This is the original post:
Hesitate to post , but if anyone has honest suggestions then worth it. No alcohol (weekend red wine only) since June 1 when 34 year son, unemployed and divorced and struggling alcoholic moved home. Thought to show support , as no big deal for me to eliminate but despite numerous recommendations at counseling I have failed to help him. Have heard numerous time rock bottom, etc . DUI hearing approaching, maybe the court will forced help.

From @Lion Son/Husband/Father: Does he go to meetings? They saved my cousins life.

From @paulrandythomas: Nearly all meetings these days are on Zoom, just google AA with your location and there will be many options. Or, the AA intergroup site has links to meetings worldwide, 24/7. He can turn off his mic and video if he wants and just listen and remain truly anonymous.

Yes, casinos are fun, and yes they do generate tax revenues... largely by emptying the pockets of degenerates and people fighting addiction. And, yes, they do attract a certain element that could be considered fun by some, but are prostitutes, bookies, mob bosses and bagmen really that much of a value-add?

Does Ira Lubert -- and his syndicate of capital partners -- stand to make a small fortune on this development courtesy of his power and influence as the chairman of the Penn State Board of Trustees?

What does this casino bring to the Penn State community?

If you were James Franklin, what are your thoughts? Does this put his student-athletes and the health of his program at risk? Think back to Mike McQueary. State College is a small town and it wouldn't be hard to find guys like Mike who might be willing to influence the outcome of a game for personal gain.

History and Presidential Inaugurations

As most of you know, my passion is history. This post is not political, and has nothing to do specifically with the individuals inaugurated today. Please do not bring any politics into this thread.

On a purely historical basis, I offer two items about Presidential inaugurations:

Got a call from a professor at half time last night regarding $ at Universities

who was watching the Browns/Steelers. He is a Prof at a school that is just outside the "Power Five" but ~ 25,000 students. She was informed, last week, to expect a 20% across the board cut. In other words, figure out a way to lay off 20% of your team and, BTW, don't expect tenure.

She was told worst case, 30% cut if they don't go back to in-person classes in August. 20% is the best guess. 10% 10 15% given what we know now (probably no real in-person this spring semester). The number varies based on a drop in enrollment, especially foreign, due to the erosion of those being able to afford college in middle America.

Just wondering if others are hearing the same.

Penn State season stats do not resemble the 4-5 record

just looked at our season stats and they certainly look better than a 4-5 record.

Offense
430 yds per game (37th in FBS)
25 First Downs per game (top 10 in FBS)
dominated time of possession (a routine complaint about past teams)
dominated total yds in several games including > 200 yd difference in games we lost
we dominated Indiana in a way we have not done in past years

Defense
329 yds per game (17th in FBS)
17 First downs per game

Differential
101 yds per game difference is top 10 FBS
8 First downs per game difference is top 10 FBS

Areas that we were not as good in
Not in top 50 in scoring offense - not in line with our Offensive stats (i.e. we had to gain a lot of yds for our points)
Not in top 50 in scoring defense - not in line with our Defensive stats
Net punting
Turnover difference (negative for us)
Penalty yds difference (negative for us)
Red zone % TD was in bottom 10%
I did not see the avg starting field position, but that seemed like an area our opponents did better in most of the games.

Seems like a team that should have been 7-2 or 6-3 at the worst, not 4-5.

Meaningless Baseball Stat for Today - Totally OT

Hard to wrap your head around this one.

In 1934 AL MVP voting

Player 1 hit .320 with 2 home runs and 75 runs batted in.

Player 2 hit .363 with 49 home runs and 166 runs batted in. Player 2 also won the Triple Crown

Player 1 won the MVP, Player 2 finished 5th in the MVP vote.

Player 1 is Mickey Cochrane, Player 2 is the immortal Iron Horse.

It’s been a slow day.

I now return you to your regular TV programming.

Dwayne Haskins

photographed at a strip club without a mask. He copped a plea and apologized. he didn't even go down the "peaceful protest" route! This is a violation of the NFL policy, BTW.

OT: A Beer for Lion Jim (even though he may not be a drinker)

From Equilibrium in Middletown, Ny. These folks use engineering principles to create their beer.

Today at Noon, we will sell, Super Fractal Mandelbrot Set (10.5% TIPA) at $22 per 4-pk, no limit. We will have this available with options for curbside pickup at the brewery or delivery throughout New York, Pennsylvania, Washington D.C., Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire, Vermont, North Dakota, and Virginia.

The Mandelbrot Set is named after Mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot. It’s a set of complex numbers for which the function does not diverge and are bounded in absolute value. Following the previous Fractal Sets and continuing the series framework, we scaled up from Fractal using a super simple grain bill of 2row and our specific fractal fermentation profile before intensely hoping it with a Citra whirlpool and a dryhop of Sabro, Strata Galaxy, and Amarillo. This batch features an increased hopping rate and plenty of hand selected hops.
Super Fractal Mandelbrot Set pours a vivid hazy yellow with an aroma of tropical citrus and grapefruit. The flavor comes alive with decadent tangerine, peach, and berry with a touch of coconut and a zesty lime finish.
Dramatic fruit notes take the lead as a crushable and #EQjuice profile builds up into a smooth and creamy finish that will leave you seeing the biggest fractal reflections yet.

Who else has completely lost interest in college football for the rest of this season?

1) We declined a bowl invite so our season is in the books.

2) The playoff is so boring and stale like a rerun we have already seen half a dozen times (because we pretty much have seen this half a dozen times with almost no variation). Same teams. We've already seen Clemson embarrass Ohio St multiple times. We've already seen Alabama blowout Notre Dame and there isn't even a Notre Dame star with a made up girlfriend this time. And we are back to Alabama/Clemson part V- thousand.

3) With only a handful teams ever winning a playoff game, it seems that the "playoff" is not for anyone but those handful of programs. You have several undefeated teams that played just about a full season and they have no means whatsoever to play for a title. But we get the exact same handful of teams nearly every year that do. It has left the other 115 teams behind. Should the other 115 teams just leave the playoff behind? I mean, it has no impact on the anyone but the same handful of fanbases every year so what's the point? Why would it even matter to anyone else?

4) How does this change, ever? I mean we all know it should change because it is killing college football. But do you think Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio St will stop purchasing most of the top recruits? Do you think ND will stop scheduling in a way that they play almost no one and end up undefeated or 1 loss until the very end of the season and then have the media cover for them?

5) I'm done watching it. Zero interest. Snoozefest. I haven't watched the "playoff" games in a couple of years outside of I did watch the championship last year, only because LSU was a different name for once. But LSU was paying their guys on the field on camera so was it really any different? The same few teams buy the necessary talent. We have a season which apparently doesn't matter anymore. Then the same teams are "selected" by the same small group of power brokers. Then the same curbstompings happen to give us Alabama verses Clemson. Over and over and over and over.
