Wrestling: Penn State vs. Iowa Match Thread

Under 90 mins to go, let’s get the chatter going . . .

• Television coverage on BTN @ 8:30 PM
• Radio coverage via LionVision
I’m a few beers in already
• johnstown picked Lar up at the airport and got him to SC safely (and with a whole new perspective on the value of NLWC to Olympic hopefuls)
• Pregaming w/ Wino is a smashing success

The table is set. Let’s put the kiddies to bed and go looking for dinner.

Right or wrong?

Penn State uses the regular season primarily to collect data for the postseason. They could put up better results if they were willing to go all out but they play the long game and don’t tip their hand until the big dance.

I know they always try to win and that they pay attention to seeding implications but it amazes me how much better they wrestle in March and particularly at Nationals. It really became obvious two years ago after Nick Lee and Starocci were handled at Big Tens only to come back and avenge those losses. They both won their titles without being in real trouble against guys that hammered them two weeks earlier. Also, Cael’s comments about 141, 149 and 165 after Iowa kind of say the same thing. Wrestling Iowa wasn’t about the W it was about seeing how guys can be beat. I also thought Starocci purposefully held back a bit and that Books did the same thing with Romero.

I got your back, Roar.

JB on, though still can't get LionVision on any of my devices.

Donovan Ball going at 184.

Vespa going at 125.

Willham didn't weigh in today, Dean going against a 184 pounder, didn't catch his name.

Barraclough and Evans going in the two "extra" bouts.

VESPA vs Moran up now!

1st Period
Moran up 1-4.
Sorry, just now got my "casting" to work.
Period ends.

2nd Period
Moran takes down, gets the quick escape, now 1-5.
Moran gets the takedown, then 4 NF. It's now 1-9.
Two more turns and it's a 2-17 tech fall for the Hoosier.

Shunk vs Porter NOW UP!

1st Period
Porter gets the first score, it's 0-2 on Shunk's shot.
Shunk escape, 1-2.
Shunk still the aggressor, can't score.
Period ends.

2nd Period
Porter takes down. Gets the escape, now 1-3.
Porter takedown late, now 1-5.
EXCITING!! Shunk reversal and takes him to his back as the period ends. It's 5-5

3rd Period
Shunk down. Gets the ESCAPE, followed by a Porter reversal and Shunk ESCAPE, tied 7-7.
1 minute to go.
30 seconds.
Period ends! Heading to SV.

Dang, Porter gets the win, 7-9.

Bartlet vs Showalter up NOW!

1st Period

Van Ness vs Rooks NOW UP!

1st Period
Double leg TAKEDO.WN, Van Ness up 2-0.
Escape makes it 2-1.
Stall against Rooks, followed by a TAKEDOWN, Van Ness leads 4-2 after a Rooks escape.
Period ends after a Van Ness TAKEDOWN, leading 6-2.

2nd Period
Rooks down, gets the escape.
Van Ness with 1 minute RT.
Van Ness TAKEDOWN, up 8-3.
Escape Rooks, now 8-4.
Period ends

3rd Period
Van Ness neutral.
TAKEDOWN!! Van Ness up 10-4.
1:30 left. He has 1 good bit of RT.
Gives the escape, 10-5.
TAKEDOWN Van Ness, leads 12-5.
Locks up the cradle, but runs out of time. WINS 17-5!!

Up Next, Rutgers: Most intriguing matchup...

Gonna be at this one live! Excited to watch the beatdown of the Jersey Boys. Not a whole lot of intrigue in this one, but I guess the most interesting one is Beau vs Olivieri. Olivieri is a talented youngster and has some nice wins recently including over D'Emilio and Cole Mattin. Beau has really progressed and I continue to believe his quickness is vastly underrated. I'll say Beau by 3.

What do others think? Predictions? How will it go?

Next up Ohio State: most intriguing matchup…

A lot of potentially exciting bouts this week including SVN-Sasso, RBY-Mendez, Beau-D’Emilo, Dean-Hoffman, Brooks-Romero and more.

The one I’m most excited to see is Facundo-Kharchla. Really curious to see how Alex responds after his loss v Kennedy. Kharchla is a strong kid with some big wins in the past, but also has some real holes in his skillset. I think Alex will be a bit more aggressive on offense, scoring on a duck or ankle pick to win by 1 or 2. What do others think? Predictions? How will the match go?

DT's on roster

DT seems to be the biggest concern on defense. People on here seem to think PSU is a bit undersized at the postion overall. What would your confidence level be if these four players added 10 lbs of "good playing weight" this offseason?

Coziah Izzard Jr 6'3" 292 lbs + 10 (302 lbs)
Jordan Vanden Berg R-Soph 6'3" 295 lbs + 10 (305 lbs)
Dvon Ellies R-Ser 6'1" 295 lbs + 10 (305 lbs)
Kaleb Artis R-Fr 6'4" 315 lbs + 10 (325 lbs)
