149 just got more interesting -- Pantaleo dropping from 157

Wow! He wrestled Nolf really tough last year. He looked big. Hard to believe he can make it down to 149.

Everyone also thinks Zahid has trouble holding 174 which has been said over and over again that it isn’t the case.

True, but dropping to a weight class he was at previously.

Yes and I'm aware of that was well. That was 2 years ago and he most certainly didn't look small at 149 then. I'm not saying that he can or can't and the OP was right, it makes 149 a lot more interesting.

Wasn't Malik Amine at 149 for UM? What happened to him? And who fills in at 157?

Yes but frankly he has never been that good. 16-14 last year, best win was probably Bleise. 4-2 this year but 0-2 vs. good wrestlers.

They can move Amine up, start Van Anrooy, or pull Lewan's shirt. Lewan is IMO the best of the 3 but probably could stand to shirt this year.

And I will continue to believe this. The same way I will never believe that Shak weighed 192 last year. Not gonna get a lot of honest answers about weight when you consider a kid's ego. Of course him and his coach aren't going to be truthful about the cut. He probably wants that 79kg spot and that's why he is staying down.

Facts:
  • Weighed somewhere between 184 and 197 pounds during certification process in 2017 and 2018
  • Wrestled 184 as a redshirt
  • He weighed-in anywhere between 185 and 192 for his FS weigh-ins in 2015/2016
  • He was a late scratch from the US Open at 79KG.

I also don't think Hall is small, but Zahid is big for 174.

Another example of this is Kennedy Monday. His frame has often been talked about by CP and Willie, but they were told repeatedly--by a coaching staff they are close with-- that he didn't cut that much to make 157. Oops, he moved up to 165 in the middle of the season.

This is speculative but it's informed speculation and I agree that Zahid probably isn't having the easiest time getting to 174, especially for duals. To your argument I'd add that we've now seen him gas twice against top tier guys (and yes, gassing isn't necessarily related to a cut, but sometimes it is).

And yeah, coaches aren't usually going to concede that one of their wrestlers' weight cuts is a problem regardless of whether it is because of the wrestler's ego and the coach's, to the extent such a concession calls their decision-making into question. Only after guys bump up do you inevitably hear that the cut was too tough to manage--never during, though.

Same thing holds in all sports. I mean, how often do you hear from a coach in a postgame, "Yeah, we probably should've punted there..."

his performance against Amine on Friday night and then his follow up performance against mark Hall on saturday night speaks volumes IMO ...

also the fact that he is taller and wider than Bo Nickal in the 2018 NCAA champs picture doesnt exactly make me doubt that opinion

If Valencia beats Mark for the title this year (which I do not believe happens) then I think there is some doubt as to which weight Zahid wrestles next year. However if Mark wins the 174 pound title then Zahid wrestles 184 next year.

Zahid weighed in a half kilo under for Final X at 79 - nobody who has trouble making weight, especially if you are speculating he missed US Open because of it, is weighing in a full pound under when he doesn't have to. Especially in the "off season"

I'm taking Pantaleo over Micah all day, every day.
I think Jordan takes Pantaleo all day, every day.
Even if he rides the snot out of him, he probably doesn't turn him, Jordan wins the neutral battle and not sure either wins the battle of conditioning.

I really wanted Nolf to get another shot at him. Most of the team looked off against Michigan last year.
Generally speaking, when most of the team looks sluggish in a dual I always assume that was one of those brutal practice weeks where the legs are fatigued and the expectation is for the kids to wrestle through the fatigue.

AP has handled Jordan in the past IIRC ...

EDIT: I see El Jefe has posted the results between the 2 and its all in Pantaleo's favor

That would be hilarious, to see Michigan big brother Rutgers in another sport.
Every time I see someone use “mobbin’” to curry favor with that crew - especially if they’re over the age of 22 and pretend to be journalists, I want to hurl.

Just stop it. It’s like a dad saying something is “lit”

Anyone have a guess as to who mans 157 now? I put Van Anrooy in his place for now...

https://www.wrestlestat.com/team/40/michigan/profile

Seems as good a guess for the very short term as any! Certainly no reason to pull Lewan out early, especially before seeing their RSSR attempt a late-career weight cut. If he looks great / a little better than Fine, how long would they watch Van Anrooy get mauled before pulling Lewan?

Even more interestingly, would they time Lewan's RS pull with pulling Mason Parris'? Say, circa February 1, location somewhere in Central PA?

Maybe you both should consider giving UM some credit here? They pretty clearly had circled the PSU dual on the calendar and wanted badly to make a national statement on their home mat. UM has some talented guys and their team wrestled very tough that day.

Would pulling Lewan's shirt just in time to face Nolf in front of 10k+ hostile fans really a good idea? Van Anrooy won't be the only one getting mauled.

The worst beating I saw pantaleo take was on the all star meet when BJ Clagon absolutely destroyed him, interesting BJ looked bad that year and didn’t qualify for Nationals. Which to this day I am perplexed on how he could look so good at times and so flat especially his senior year

I mean, probably not.

But I've been on this kick where I project onto coaches this notion of our sport or a Dual Meet being a "Big Event", so, uh, maybe Bormet would go for it?

I misread Zeke going for the Big Event Move of finishing with Zahid-Hall (which, I presume Cael offered and Zeke turned down, instead opting for the competing concept of "Gotta show my guys I believe in them that they can win" and bumping Milhof to get him AND Courtney into the lineup, which...hey, sincere kudos for that).

But for Bormet, a Big Event Move is different than it was for Zeke. Pulling shirts for Lewan & Parris and inserting them into the lineup actually vastly improves their chances to win a dual vs PSU. Also, Bormet is a pretty hard-core competitor coach. He publicly published the internal wrestle-off results between Pantaleo & Lewan early this year (1-1 split), and then let them both compete against each other in the MSU Open Final (Lewan, 10-8, in SV1).

And of course he knows his Team is stronger in Pittsburgh with them both competing. Michigan could put a hard push onto Iowa for that fourth spot on the Team Podium, behind PSU, OkSt & tOSU.

So....maybe?

Did you miss the last two times he wrestled Zain?

Saw the one at Rider where he lost 2 -1 IIRC which he looked really good , thought he was real close to getting a takedown couple of times. Probably gave Zain one of his toughest matches that year

When J'Den Cox was a freshman a lot of people thought for sure he was going 285 the next year. He never did.

125 Mattin v Schnupp
133 Micic v RBY
141 Storr v Lee
149 Pantaleo v. Berge
157
165 Massa v. Cenzo
174 Amine v. Hall

PSU heavy favorites at 157, 184, 197, 285, but in those other six matches Michigan would probably think they are favored or are only slight underdogs.
