Now that Chance Marstellar is eligible to wrestle the full year.....the 165lb. bracket gets even better. Cenzo, Imar, Massa, McFadden, Rogers, Walsh, Womack and Campbell are all back. Add Marstellar, Marinelli and National Champ Isiah White to the mix and it gets crazy. There are absolute studs that will not be All-Americans. Almost every Big 10 matchup will be a marquee event. Going to be fun to watch.

PS: I forgot A. Valencia....if he doesn't move up.... just add some more exclamation points.

I hate to break it to the Iowa folks, but there is a very good chance Marinelli doesn't AA this year.

I believe Ramos is 174.

Nice weight class. Whoever wins will have earned it.

When picking the AA's from this group.....who do you leave out? I would say that....barring injury.... Imar, Cenzo and Massa are locks. I think Marstellar and White are solid bets. I think Rogers ( or Smith if he moves up ) is a pretty solid pick. That leaves Valencia, McFadden, Marinelli, Campbell and the rest for the final two. Hard to choose between them. Give me Valencia and Campbell as my hunch pick. If Valencia moves up.....I will go with Marinelli. Of course...if Valencia moves up....Shields is also a tough out. Your turn.

Hughes returning at the weight, shirting, or going up to 174?

Has it been generally concluded that Marsteller's gas-tank issues of old are now resolved (i.e., were simply due to weight cut, or other factors no longer part of the equation)?

How would we know? Not exactly a heap of evidence of him at 165 in college, let alone the grind of a full seaason.

Why are you including Campbell in that group? What has Campbell done to deserve inclusion in that group?

Kind of why I was asking. Wasn't sure how the recent freestyle work (seemingly good) translated to predictions for college folkstyle conditioning.

I have watched him wrestle a good bit. Tremendously athletic. He was the ACC Champ last year. 22-4 record with over 50% bonus. Big 165lber. Gave Cenzo a pretty good match......lost some matches because of technique....which can be taught. I think he is going to improve greatly in the Ohio State room. As I stated....just my hunch He may bump up or redshirt...but if he can wrestle at 165 I believe he will be a force

With the caveat that folk and free are apples and oranges, he looked as good as he's looked since high school in his last tournament, and more importantly looked good late in his last match (I think he got tech'd by Ringer but he fought well), suggesting he's maybe doing the right things off the mat.

Yes -- apples to oranges is my underlying presumption, but not sure how important. And just to avoid any potential confusion, I'm assuming he is doing the right things off the mat. I alluded to it only because I have no idea what the relative contributions of weight cutting vs. "other factors" were in his conditioning issues at OSU.

However, we've seen seemingly mysterious conditioning issues with other wrestlers before that no one was able/willing to publicly attribute to weight or lifestyle, and so I wondered how certain folks were that a third, unresolved issue (e.g., physiological, psychological) was never (and couldn't still be) at play.

I'm just hesitant to lean toward him as an AA until I feel like it was simply the weight cut or lifestyle that was the problem at OSU. And I say that just for discussion's sake -- I have no agenda here.

Fair enough. Time will tell.

He did wrestle at 157 at Okie State because Dieringer was at 165....and it was hard for him.....or at least he hated having to do it.

When he was at 157, he was out of gas at the end of the 1st period in November. 165 will be a much better fit for him.

I agree. As a true frosh he finished 4th at the Scuffle at 165.
Re. Marsteller...
Including wins over Palacio and Ramos!!

All's been covered here; stamina issues at 157, distractions, bad decisions, commitment, etc.

If all of that stuff is behind him (hearing good things about where he's at right now), I'm of the opinion he will make noise at 165. As someone else said, time will tell. He surely has the tools.

The cut was harder for him because he didn't want to cut (but had to to make the team), and he didn't follow the advice as to how to do it properly. Too much bounce, he just didn't want to learn at that time, and there were some lifestyle factors in play that hurt him too.

Hope he comes back strong.

CowboyUP61 may not agree, but I wouldn't call Rodgers a "solid pick" I think he's more of a feast or famine wrestler. When he's on, he's pretty good, but he could also go 1-2 at NCAAs.

If Smith moves up? Man that would be a tough one. Stay at 157 knowing I can not beat Nolf (also must endure physically draining ass kicking) and doubt I can beat Kemerer. Second choice bump to 165 where I also have no chance of winning but if I have a perfect storm I may medal.

I won't disagree. Luckily, he is on more than off lately, and from what I have seen in the room on the odd times I get to go over he is becoming more consistent. So, unlike me, getting more solid all the time ;)

What are you hearing about a redshirt for JoJo?

Nothing. When I hear anything like that conversation begin, I walk away. Not that I don't want to be in the know, just I don't want to be the one who talks about something when I shouldn't. Not my job to be breaking news source, leave that to Willie. Once it is in the open, then I will talk about it with everyone else.

Personally, IMO he looks more fit than I have seen in two years. The redshirt and move up theory makes no sense to me, as their would be no benefit. Chandler can't move up, so would leave one of them on the bench. Healthy Joe makes 57 without problems.

So your saying that rumors on Oklahoma HS wrestling sites have no merit......egads

Interesting, the lack of overall discussion on 34 and Holding. We'd be all over this topic here, and all over the place with our speculation.

I think an apology is in order. I forgot that he finished 5th. I may have been projecting 2016's DNP onto him. He is probably slightly more consistent than I gave him credit for. But, phew doggie. 65 will be a meat grinder.

Oh, it is being discussed-just not in public. It's hard to describe. Those who might have access to the info easily don't want to have it, because if something gets blabbed the coaches don't want talked about, access will go away.

And I can just keep up with one travel/rumor thread at a time .

not really, Chandler would admit the inconsistency. Now if he knew you forgot he worked his way to fifth, he might be upset

Get that completely, in my situation trust is critical too.

My comment should have been presented in a more overall-discussion, number-of-posts kind of way. Total of 12 posts this month (September 1 through right now)!! The OSU program is full of rich history, and yet this website is sort of meh. Am I missing something?

While I wish it was more active year-round, I think it is a combination of things that make it slower. We have a smaller, probably older (older than me even) fan base than BWI and HR do. While we like to have fun, we do it more in person than on-line, so the "banter" doesn't flow as freely. Some of us old guys get insulted easy (obviously not me:rolleyes:) and take it too personally, so that kind of stuff is left off the board, or sometimes deleted.

That's why I enjoy coming here and HR, because all in all, in the end we are mostly wrestling fans. Hard times, yes, hard feelings, usually not.
