Can someone explain how this is permitted under NCAA rules?
It just wreaks of excess.
Has there been any fallout?
And, once that loophole is closed, which other loophole will Harbaugh find? I believe that teams can only do a trip like this once every 4 years, so he'll have to come up with something in the next 6 months. It was a "travel exemption" permitted by the NCAA so NCAA Basketball teams could participate in overseas tournaments/travel during the off-season as I understand it. But the NCAA did not limit the exceptions (i.e., to "benefits") to only b-ball or any specific sports - again as I understand it, so Hairball and scUM are providing their football players clear "excess benefits" and a free trip/vacation to Italy with no reason relative to their specific sport (which is illegal under the "spirit" of the rules, but scUM and Hairball are thumbing their nose again at the NCAA and LEGITIMATE rules they have in regards to benefits.....go figure, and scUM fans like to rip on SEC programs, LOL!).
Harbaugh could have problems with Brutus over there, too.
I am thinking of the guy who shanked Caesar (Julius, not Sid).I think the Brutus you are thinking of is from Ancient Greece.

Fishing in the Trevi Fountain:Hey! Let's check in on Jimmy and his band of international footballers!
Seriously, these guys are basically vacationing in Italy on Michgan's dime. Harbaugh is scum.

I guess, when your best season in years end up in Florida (with a loss), you've got to do SOMETHING!
LOL - that's a selfie stick, right? Who dresses like that?

I'm not sure what the huge issue is. Sure, it's excessive and unnecessary, but so what? Michigan players work their tails off for their football program, and I don't really see what the big deal is if the program wants to take the team on what essentially amounts to a little vacation and sightseeing trip in lieu of making the most of their spring practice time on campus.

I felt this way when Coach Cooper took the baseball team to Cuba two years ago, I'd feel the same way if Franklin wanted to take the team to have spring practice in Australia in 2018, and I'll feel the same way when Coach Chambers takes the basketball team to Europe later this summer. I just don't think it's a big deal, especially for football programs that make money hand over fist - generally speaking, I'm in favor of anything that gives the players a greater share of the revenue that they produce.Other than the fact that providing such "Player Benefits" are clearly against the both the letter and "spirit" of the NCAA Rules - the exemption he is using was never intended for football. Why am I not surprised that the scUM troll has no problem with scUM providing illegal "extra player benefits" and says it's really no big deal that they are doing it.... Yawn.

My, my. You spent all that time looking up photos of Harbaugh ? You must be a secret fan.

To say that Jimmah has "jumped the shark", would be the understatement of the year. It's nothing but a boondoggle. There is no rule that allows it (the foreign tour rule is only valid if you actually play games against foreign competition). But, in typical Harbaugh fashion, there's no rule that says you can't travel to another country on a boondoggle to "practice" when school isn't in session (Michigan's finals week started last week, though I'm sure all Michigan's finals were conveniently scheduled for last week). I expect there to be such a rule this time next year.
Meanwhile, there's no way the practices over there are providing any value to their 2017 season, so for that, I thank Harbaugh
This is absolutely no different (in terms of excess) from playing a football game in Ireland. Haters gonna hate. Sad imoI'm not sure what the huge issue is. It is a big deal because the trip has nothing to do with football and all about flaunting it to the NCAA.
You can't even use the Ireland trip because that team really didn't do any sightseeing. Meanwhile, Harbaugh is doing a grand tour of Rome.

I think you are reaching. If Joe had taken a team to Italy, we would also say how a great learning experience it was.
And the team absolutely did do sightseeing in Ireland.
I am surprised that the IRS doesn't view the cost of this trip as taxable income for the players....
Then they would do the same for bowl trips, and any away games, correct?
I don't see how a bowl game during the season is the same as a trip for spring practice...
