Ive actually got a great story about attending with a few of my teammates.
We had a pretty good junior high program which still includes 9th grade so we wanted to up our games to get on the mat as 10th graders. At the time Fritz was still the PSU coach. While I was a PSU football fan I was still pretty new to wrestling and the rest of the guys were pretty much whatever. We chose PSU over Rande Stottlemyer (RIP) and Pitt because Rande was a local, living in Charleroi we could see him in some local rooms. Guess 20 years later I’m glad we made that choice lol.
We had a great time, being WPIAL kids and weighing about 125-130 pounds me and my teammate and roommate Vince decided to try to pal up with Jeremy Hunter since he was also local from McGuffey but we didn’t want to get beat on too bad lol.
We ended up in a group that was headed by if I recall correctly Biff Wailzer and Clint Musser. One of them I think Musser was just moving into an off campus apartment and had no necessities, we took it upon ourselves to lift our forks knives and spoons from breakfast and lunch for a few days to save him on silverware and cutlery, he was greatful would love to know if he remembers that.
Also they gave us all nicknames, not sure why but I became Schooner like the boat all week, Vince was Chad because he looked like their buddy chad. So for the next 5-10 months thats what we called each other. I still remember, “You, your chad, “no I’m Vince” nope chad, your chad”
I ended up getting dropped on my head and splitting it open on the concrete between some divided mats in the room and got a concussion on the last morning, I missed out on the quad dual finale and had to watch with stitches and an ice pack.
I still look back and remember how much fun we had and how much we learned.
PS I think Chertow was there, he was everywhere in PA at the time, but he wasn’t selling advocate yet.
