Hey friends, looks like I'm going to have the chance to visit State College for the first time since moving away as a child decades ago. I'll be passing close by during the week of July 4 and have convinced my travel buddy to take a detour to spend several hours poking around State College one day. Any suggestions or tips on what should be on my must see/do list?

Obviously I'd love to see Rec Hall and the wrestling facilities, but I don't know how tightly access is controlled. The Creamery comes highly recommended, of course. Is there a best place to park on campus for visitors? Any places I should avoid?

I have some flexibility on being there closer to the middle or end of the week. Any thoughts about which day would be best between July 2-5?

Thx in advance!

Rec Hall is usually locked these days. Wrestling and hockey depend. If a tourney or clinic is going on at Pegula, you can walk inside easily. I highly suggest parking in the parking deck. Easy walk to Berkey, and no chance of being towed. Highly suggest the Tavern since the remodel. Also, if I was going back, I'd check out the Nittany Lion Inn. I just missed the opening by a week last year. I've heard they did a nice job on the remodel.

@PSUbluTX

I think the parking deck @Hotshoe is referring to is the East Parking deck. There are other options, but it depends on where you want to be. Just make sure you park where allowed so you don't get a ticket. (It will be more of a hassle than a fine.)

I agree with him on the Tavern, but if your are expecting the old Tavern, it is not that. Restaurants, in general, downtown are not anywhere as good as they were 15-20 years ago. Allen St Grille is still good, Bill Pickels is a nice bar, and Federal Tap House is okay (but not on College Ave). There is no more Baby's, Ol' College Diner, and the Corner Room menu is very limited compared to 10 years ago. Nittany Lion Inn is good since the reopen.

For things to do there is the All Sports Museum and the Arboretum as well. The CATA loop and link are still free and operating during the summer as is the campus shuttle.

There is also 4th Fest on July 4th. That may or may not make things better for you.

Hope this was helpful.

Send an email to Adam Lynch (director of wrestling operations) aml5150@psu.edu, telling him what you told us. I have little doubt that Adam will personally give you and your friend a guided tour of the wrestling facility if he has the time.

For a great burger go to The Field at Toftrees. For breakfast it’s obviously The Waffle Shop (although The Naked Egg in Pine Grove Mills is also good.) Hike Mount Nittany for the campus/town view. Drive to the top of the mountain above Pine Grove Mills on 26 for a view of the whole Happy Valley. Don’t forget to swing by Beaver Stadium to get a feel for the changes underway there.

Don't forget rhe Phyrst. However, they really cleaned up inside and it no longer smells like a beer hall.

Just be aware that while the 4th Feat takes place on campus, the University is closed on the 4th. Most things, including the Creamery & Sports Museum, will not be open.

I’d vote for one of the favorite spots for many on the team: Sowers Harvest Cafe. Personally partial fo their breakfast, but the lunch food is great too. Incredible staff, and food made with love—and you might, as I have, catch Mitchell playing the piano, or see any number of his teammates.

Funnily enough, their neighbor in their little strip mall, Carter’s Table, makes the best tacos ever served in Centre County—outside of my patio anyway. 😉
