2017....Florida State opens the season playing Alabama, Penn St plays Akron

Actually, across the board our schedule is MUCH tougher than FSUs. As for Alabama, yes they play a tough schedule. However, as the Big returns to normal, by 2017, our schedule will be just as "tough" - OSU, Michigan, MSU, Nebraska. Not too shabby !!!!

When and if the big ever gets back to respectable- then I'll believe it. Don't count on it before then. ;).

I get that scheding was weak with the sanctions fallout but now we should start to see better scheduling from Sandy/ PSU. If they continue with Pitt, Temple, Akron etc then people have a right to be upset. Since scheduling is like 5-7 (or more) years in the future, I would hope to see some type of series announced with LSU, Georgia, Florida, USC etc

I really believe both PSU and Michigan will be back within the next 2-3 years. Harbaugh will be bringing in a top 10 class this year (boy I hate saying that). As for us we will not be far behind. Point being, recruiting will make a big difference for both of these programs. Sure, I would like to see a big game with another team outside of the Big 10 each year, but it is not necessary. If we win the Big 10 we are in the playoffs, that is all. Heck IF we run the table this year, we are in. Of course beating OSU and MSU ? Really??

We're opening up that season against a member of the winningest coaching family in college football history. Neither FSU nor Alabama can say the same.

We are...
Who did FSU open with a few years ago when WE opened with Alabama? When they are playing those tough ACC opponents, who are we playing? When they ran the table last year in that tough acc, and got smoked by OREGON, who did we play? Ohio State, Michigan State, both of whom were better than ANYONE FSU Played all year.

The 2010 and 2011 games were both the second games of the year. Those years we opened with Youngstown St and Indiana St. In 2010 FSU squared off against Oklahoma the second week but played Charleston Southern the second week in 2011.

Michigan's 2012 class was ranked 7th (ten 4* and two 5*)
Michigan's 2013 class was ranked 5th (sixteen 4* and one 5*)

These kids are just now at the age where they should start making an impact. Don't be surprised if Michigan bounces back quickly. They have a much stronger foundation that PSU.

Has anyone ever heard what happened to the discussions with LSU not long ago?

REALLY sucks to be in the east. OSU, Michigan, Penn State, Michigan State. In the west it's going to be Wisc or Nebraska every year.

And how were those uncalled for, crippling sanctions Florida State received a few years ago? Oh, that's right, it was Penn State that had those. The schedule was made due to those effects. But, you knew that, right?

Bd, point taken. I really should have added that Harbaugh is a proven head coach. So talent for him will produce. He did an amazing job at Stanford. As far as Franklin I "think" he will produce as well, again an experienced and successful head coach. But, time will tell.

Uh, Professor...Penn State was supposed to play Alabama in 2004/2005, IIRC. Alabama asked to reschedule. Penn State obliged. Then, we scheduled USF or UCF or Akron, can't recall exactly who, to take the place of Alabama.

Nonetheless, Professor...Penn State should gets its head out of its ass as start scheduling better OOC foes. Or, Art (once he finishes breakfast) can explain to us why Penn State needs to keep scheduling weaklings to keep our beloved Alma Mater financially afloat.

You do recall why Alabama asked to reschedule?

USF, UCF and Akron would all be mid range competitors in the ACC. In 2013, when UCF BEAT us, they also beat Baylor in the fiesta bowl. UCF was better that year than any team in the ACC with the possible exception of florida State. In '13, florida State played Bethune the f@ck Cookman, Nevada, and Pitt. They beat a BAD Md team 63-0. Come on.

When FSU gets in a real fb conference, let me know. That is when we need to schedule like they do

Michael, do you know (or remember) why Alabama wanted out? I do.
Answer: they wanted out since they knew they "sucked" and did not want to be embarrassed against us. I recall Joe letting them out. I wonder what "pundits" would have said if we returned the favor some years later when we were "not as good". The decision Joe made at the time did not bother me, but to some losing the "chance" to beat up on Alabama was a wasted opportunity. It turned out we were not very good in 2004, but really good in 2005.

In the immortal words of my woodshop teacher when two of my friends got in a fight outside our classroom window one day ..."I hope they kill each other!"

If true, then the current schedule has nothing to do with the sanctions as is often stated on this board.

In 2017, Rutgers will be better than Alabama, so you won't have to worry about SOS.

In 2017 our OOC schedule includes Akron, Pitt, and Georgia State - 3 glorified high school teams. We need to play at least one respected Division 1 OOC team each year. I don't see how we can expect our fans to enthusiastically attend games against cupcakes like these. Each of these games will last about 5 minutes before the subs take over.

This made my day.

PSU did not open with Alabama back in 2010/2011, both times it was the second game of the season. In 2010, FSU opened with Samford, but played Oklahoma the next week, the same day PSU played Alabama. In 2011, they opened with Louisiana-Monroe, and played Charleston Southern the same day PSU played Alabama. But they played Oklahoma the next week. Oklahoma was pretty good those years, with records of 12-2 and 10-3.

I was surprised to learn that FSU didn't start playing football until 1947!

Hopefully at least Akron will be decent that year.

No , normal is the fact that OSU, Michigan, Nebraska and PSU have been NATIONAL POWERS through most of the last 50 years. So, I do expect all of them to be relevant at that level once again. In short, most years ALL of these teams should be top 20. Looking at the coaching and recruiting by all these programs I see no reason not to be optimistic. Nebraska, I believe, has the toughest road.
I have mixed feelings since Harbaugh was hired. I do not care for him, but I think he will turn around the Michigan program much sooner than later. Plus, I hate the big 10, but I believe "program" history cuts for great deal ($$$$$).
I don't think anyone on this board "thought" OSU would win last year. Now THEY have become the gold standard. How can that be? From the Big 10?
As an aside, I recall when Alabama was very average as was USC. Things sometimes run in cycles.

PSU recently played Alabama for an OOC game. Unless I'm mistaken Bama pushed the game back because they were coming off of sanctions (surprise, surprise) and wanted to be competitive. As a Buckeye fan I'm not sure what the PSU OOC schedule going forward is. But the B1G East with tOSU, MSU, PSU, and Michigan is shaping up to be the toughest division in all of CFB. As for tOSU, especially with the upcoming 9 conference game schedule, the basic idea is to have one major OOC opponent and two automatic wins. I take it PSU is going the same route?

East is far better than the West but I think Minnesota is going to be a legit top 20-25 program. Wisconsin seems to have some serious problems with Alvarez and the football program. Not sure what it is but a lot of stuff seems to be going on.

the B1G East

Ugh... Let's never call it that again! Just reminds me of the Big East. It's horrifying like when people abbreviate the city of Pittsburgh as Pitt. I always have to correct them, Pittsburgh is a very nice city, Pitt is a small specialty interest school that no one cares about except for 17 delusional posters on the lair.
