2017 pre-season top 25: What, no Pitt or ND?

#7 is too low for PSU, in my opinion. But at least in the Top 10, so the preseason ranking should not hinder them in late season CFP evaluations.

Michigan seems really high on that list, given what they lose. They are being penciled in for 10 wins. I would take the under on that bet.

Agree with this ... Michigan will be 8-4 next year and the natives will get restless lol

Preseason rankings mean virtually nothing. Just win! If we don't lose to Pitt we are in the playoff. If we don't get blown out by Michigan we may have been in the playoff. What was Washington ranked in preseason? I'm convinced if any P5 team is undefeated they'll have a playoff birth. In most years any 1 loss team makes playoffs.

They will battle hard for third place in the east, but may fall to their little brother. Boy, what they spend on Harbaugh is way too lofty for a perennial 3rd place finish.

But.. but.. but.. Pitt beat two top 2 teams and apparently they played the toughest schedule in the whole wide galaxy.. so what gives?

Nope..I still think PSU is better team right now then USC.
Who knows? You could argue that the RB would have been a push on a neutral field and PSU has a lot of players returning. It's just difficult to overlook our exposure at LB. Just look at how the game swung the other way after Bell went out.

But almost no one goes undefeated so the preseason rankings do matter.

This year the CFP ranking were almost identical to the AP rankings, in the top 6 at least. So, this year at least they mattered. Just another thing that shows the CFP ranking follows group think as opposed to the independence that we were promised.

Agreed. Hard to believe that a team losing 18 starters plus kicking specialist(s) is top 10, even with consecutive top-5 recruiting classes this year and last. Plus the 2017 scUM schedule is 6 home and 6 away games, unlike last year where 8 of 12 games were at home. I see 4 probable losses (UF in Arlington, @PSU, @Wisc, OSU) on that slate. Top 25? Sure. Think 2015 PSU with somewhat better talent plus the B1G officiating tailwinds that will carry them to 8-4 or 9-3.

College football thrives on group think and always has. A high percentage of the same teams will make up the preseason top 25 every year regardless of what they did the previous year or how many players they're losing.

If we don't lose to Pitt we go to playoff. That means 0 or 1 loss teams go to playoff. Teams can't have 2 losses and expect to go to playoff. Teams that lose twice don't deserve a playoff spot. How many 2 loss teams made the BCS? Playoff the last couple of years?

And there's no guarantee we would have gone to the playoffs had we beat Pitt. We still didn't pass the eye test as well as OSU and there was still the thumping by Michigan.

That would mean they would have to win all the games in which they are favored and go 2-2 against Florida, @PSU, at Wisconsin and O$U. Not sure I see that happening. That first game against Florida in Arlington is huge for them and they are going to be playing it with a really young team which includes a new QB and almost a completely new defense. Really excited to see the meltdown next year if they get upset early. Jimmie's adorable quirkiness starts to look like the obnoxious idiocy it really is when his team's start to lose.

IMO we would have gone if we beat Pitt or Michigan.

Does Florida find an offense and how much do they lose on defense?
