so back to football. I see that we open up with App State. What are everyone's feeling on the game? I am sure there will not be a big upset like the Michigan game but I think App State could provide us a "game"

I don’t think they will be overwhelmed by the stage. I do think we outclass them as we work out the kinks of new personnel in some spots. 35-14

They are starting a new qb who will be making his first ever start, in Beaver Stadium. That does not mean Psu automatically wins the game, but it's an advantage, going into the game. There are probably only 3 or 4 stadiums in the entire nation that would be harder for a new qb to break in at....Bryant Denny obviously, possibly the Shoe, maybe between the hedges in Athens, death valley, and those only because of CFP teams inhabiting those fields.

That's the final step in the Franklin era, make the CFP: Psu has been mighty close two times.

I think it may be a challenge for us. We will be a highlight on the App St. schedule and they are a tough out from the group of five. I’m not predicting a Penn State loss, but we can’t take them for granted.

It is a good, not great, Group of 5 opponent. Better to get such a team early. They will battle us, and they will pull out the trickeration, I'm sure. No 56-0 expectations here.

If our OOC scheduling philosophy is to get one good to very good P5 opponent (Pitt not a long-term fitt), one very good G5 opponent, and a MAC team or other G5 team who will play just 1 game at PSU (sometimes also a very good G5 team, just not this year with Kent State), then it is a good game to open with.

I don't know that that is our philosophy, even though that is what Sandy said a couple years ago, iir. We have the San Jose / Nevada double down in 2020.... with some chance that at least one of them will be a bowl team that season, but still. We are at Va. Tech that year, so a very good P5 opponent is there.

My wish is that we would replace Idaho, who is dropping to 1AA this season, in 2019 with a MWC team if that's what we want to do, and not have 2 MWC teams in one season. We also finish the series with Pitt at home, and also play Buffalo. From 2018's tremendous home schedule to 2019's so-so one, quite a contrast. It should be noted that Idaho was much improved in 2017 over previous seasons, and played in a bowl. Still, their current 1AA designation does not help us.

2021 has Ball State (MAC mediocrity as of now), Auburn! at home, and one more home OOC TBD.

After that, we get into the West Va. series, a game at Auburn... so the P5 opponents are stepping up in class soon enough.

Yep, returning, experienced, talented QB's are pretty much a must have for a very undermatched team to pull off a gigantic upset. And it also helps the underdog if the favorite is breaking in a brand new QB that is trying to get his feet on the ground. As none of that is true for this game I see a BIG PSU win......

PSU’s opening schedule is a perfect launching pad for the grueling B1G schedule. Should give them plenty of time to solidify key positions against decent competition but it’s not too taxing.

Last year, the schedule played out just about how most thought it would, but that's not always the case. Some seasons you look at the schedule and it looks rough, but plays easier....others you think it's a breeze, but it turns out difficult. Lately our schedules have pretty much played out like they looked in the preseason, with no more than one or two exceptions. Michigan State's down year in 2016 comes to mind, as does the Temple "greatest Temple team ever" that rose up and whipped us in 2015 with our "round peg/square hole" offense under Donovan.

This year you look at the schedule and you see a rough road, but most of it needs to come into our house and finish. Believe it or not, nobody has actually done that since 2015.

They lost their QB who basically was that team. So there will be a lot of kinks for them to work out early in the season
