1968 was worse, so was 1973 (long deployment, missed entire football season)
1973 was an awful year and not unlike now -- inflation, gas lines, heat, unemployment, a criminal in the WH. We survived that. We can survive this year.
1968 was worse, so was 1973 (long deployment, missed entire football season)
Go read that thread. 68 was way worse.Disagree totally. 1968 did not toe up to the line of a Great Depression that could adversely and permanently are a whole generation. We could avoid this, but the clock is ticking...
But to say the one that actually happened is worse than the one that is just starting is pure guesswork. No it isn't. One actually happened, one is something that you think may happen.
We’re so f*cked.
That's what I like about you, Bob: your inexhaustible optimism. We will.
Unless and until your particular future happens, it hasn't happened. But to say the one that actually happened is worse than the one that is just starting is pure guesswork.
38 million unemployed hasn’t happened? Wow, wish I would have known that. That’s more than the depression, so good thing it didn’t happen.Unless and until your particular future happens, it hasn't happened.
The ability to ruminate and to choose to flood ourselves with the news of the day causes some issues.I am of the opinion that the www (24/7) makes it seem like the worse as compared to say Vietnam war or others, as just the nightly news reminding of such!
So all we're missing now is inflation and gas lines. Have to save those two for another year.1973 was an awful year and not unlike now -- inflation, gas lines, heat, unemployment, a criminal in the WH. We survived that. We can survive this year.

Good bet there.Gen Xer. I’m sure some of the older members have seen worse with Vietnam, Korea etc.

You are seriously trying to make this out to be as bad as the Depression, aren't you? It isn't- not remotely. I'd hate to see how some of you guys would deal with real hardship.38 million unemployed hasn’t happened? Wow, wish I would have known that. The Depression-level recession IS happening right now. The question is will it persist (like the 1930s) or will the recovery be sharp and quick. No it isn't. One actually happened, one is something that you think may happen.

i am well aware of 1968. Today is worse.Go read that thread. 68 was way worse.
a recession is not a depression- if we hit 20%+ unemployment levels for several years, then we've got a depressionThe Depression-level recession IS happening right now. The question is will it persist (like the 1930s) or will the recovery be sharp and quick.
That is correct (as I noted in my post)...only time will tell. But right now it is a REALLY BAD Recession.a recession is not a depression- if we hit 20%+ unemployment levels for several years, then we've got a depression
Yeah but I appreciate the heartfelt "we are all in this together" from the celeb's toughing it out in Malibu or hiding in the Bahamas - I'm looking at you Kelly Ripa. What a joke - if they had 1/2 a brain they would just STFU.Perhaps the worst part is all of the f*cking PANDEMIC. -themed commercials.

F*ck off.
Not even close. This pales in comparison. At least so far.You must be one i

2020 is worse. What do the numbers say? In 1968, the US GDP grew by 4.9% - boom times! Currently we have economic devastation. And there are city blocks that are being destroyed now...you must be nostalgic for the 1960s. You are out of your element in this debate. Not even close. This pales in comparison. At least so far.
Few city blocks have been destroyed, if any. Businesses were looted but the buildings still stand. In 68 entire blocks were burned to the ground. Many cities had sections that looked like Dresden.2020 is worse. What do the numbers say? In 1968, the US GDP grew by 4.9% - boom times! Currently we have economic devastation. Not yet it’s not, but it could be....that’s the point....of course, it’s not surprising you missed the point. You are seriously trying to make this out to be as bad as the Depression, aren't you? It isn't- not remotely. I'd hate to see how some of you guys would deal with real hardship.

Nice narrative..and yes it was bad. But economy grew by 4.9% - boom time In 1968 by any definition. 100,000 + dead by Chinese virus vs 49 dead in Detroit. Heck, New York and PA nursing homes covered that in one day with room to spare. And the stage is set In 2020 for much, much worse. The bad stuff in 1968 was a temporary blip on the radar screen. And did I mention a new Cold War starting with China in 2020? An adversary far more threatening than Soviet Russia.Few city blocks have been destroyed, if any. Businesses were looted but the buildings still stand. In 68 entire blocks were burned to the ground. Many cities had sections that looked like Dresden.
Many cities had tanks on patrol. TANKS! US military tanks!
43 people died........just in Detroit! How many died this week?
People were terrified to go into any city for months. Thousands of businesses never reopened. Tens of thousands of housing units gone.
Political leaders assassinated. Tet offensive. Massive anti war demonstrations. Bombings by Weather Underground, SDS, Puerto Rican separatists. Soviet Union invading Czechoslovakia. Duck and cover nuclear attack drills.
More upheaval.....environmental demonstrations, women's rights protests, hippie/drug culture movement, college campi in uproar.
68 was one crazy year.
You forgot that in 1968 we were about to put Nixon into the White House...you're right 2020, IS worseNice narrative..and yes it was bad. Since you like statistics here’s two for you: worldwide 2018 - 10 million people had TB ( tuberculosis ) and 1.5 million deaths from it. Hear much about it? Happens every year. It doesn’t shut down the world economy.Nice narrative..and yes it was bad. But economy grew by 4.9% - boom time In 1968 by any definition. 100,000 + dead by Chinese virus vs 49 dead in Detroit. Agree. So why was it shut down? And why so slow to reopen in USA? Questions I would love to see an answer.Since you like statistics here’s two for you: worldwide 2018 - 10 million people had TB ( tuberculosis ) and 1.5 million deaths from it. Hear much about it? Awesome news...hope it keeps going in this direction! Tip of the cap to Steve Mnuchin. Long, long way to go...but very nice to see.Looking like the next great depression will be put on hold. Time to get back in off the ledge.
And who hired Steve Mnuchin?Awesome news...hope it keeps going in this direction! Tip of the cap to Steve Mnuchin. Long, long way to go...but very nice to see.
