2026 Recruiting underway

With all the kids coming through Lorenzo to train with others, Cael has the opportunity to see and evaluate a ton of talented kids. Those on the radar and some not as apparent. CCC&J (Nick I am sure has been learning) know exactly what they are looking for and when they see it they are not slow to react, nor do they have Bobby Telford represent their interest.
They also build respectful relationships, (ie Askren) and communicate with a straight forward honesty. MM being a great example. Askren was pushing MM at PSU and at the time with Levi and Facundo coming the staff simply told them they would be happy to have him as a walk-on but he would probably be better off going somewhere else. The current portal rules allowed that miss to be corrected, but the relationship that mutual honesty and respect develops allows Askren to push the Mirasola twins PSU direction.

Inside the Iowa sales room:

"Put that coffee down Tom!". Coffee is for closers".

"Always be closing! Always be closing!. Get MAD you sons a bitches! Penn State can take the leads you have and get 4 COMMITS by midnight tonight. Can you Telford? Can you Morningstar? If you want my advice, fire your ass Brands, cause a loser is a loser. I'm here from State College, I am here from Sanderson and Cunningham, and I am here on a mission of mercy! Know what it takes to compete with Penn State? It takes BRASS BALLS to compete with Penn State. First place is a Cadillac car, second place a set of steak knives, third place is Michigan and 4th place is Iowa State. Fifth place is your fired. I'd tell you good luck Terry but you and your brother wouldn't know what to do with it. These are the good leads, these are the SANDERSON/TAYLOR LEADS... AND YOU DON'T GET THEM. Because to give them to you Bobby, would be throwing them away."

They're for closers. They're for Cael, Cody, Casey, Varner, and Nick.

Good communication is important in any walk of life. Some like Cael are very skilled in staying in contact with everyone and helping when he can. You can bet no one on the PSU staff would "no call no show" at Wyoming Seminary.

I am already getting tired of the Bassett approach and things have just started.

To be clear calling him is of course a must, but his complete bullshit there are 30 schools in consideration is almost a red flag. Realistically, 4-5 at most, why not just be honest for Christ sake, and not burn precious $$$ from some of these smaller programs just to get wined and dined.

The talent is emmense but the presentation has the "it's all about me" flavor that leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

All of this tells me he emotionally 'needs' to be the face of a program, not just one of the many greats. Unfortunately we have seen this before and IMO Bo is even worse.

I could be wrong but the optics are poor.
I agree it’s not a good look and he’s getting some on line pushback. But he’s a kid and if this is his worst mistake he makes he’ll be miles ahead of me at his age.

I internally cringe at some of the stupid crap I did and said back at 16-22. Looking at this from that perspective is wise counsel.

Why do they have to call?
Because they are going to at least call every top 100 recruit within of campus as well as keep the dialogue open with the coach of one of the top HS in the country within that distance to continue recruiting lesser prospects that may be a better fit. So up to this point they are in for the quarter that it costs to make that call.

I don't think Bassett comes to PSU. He recognizes the quality of the coaches and the wrestling talent that is present here. However, I agree with those who feel that wherever he chooses to go, he wants to be the face of that program. Winning team championships, I don't believe, is of great interest to him. I believe he wants to be the next Suriano or S Lee where he wins individual national championships and is the face of that teams program. Given that, I'll wager he chooses Iowa.

Brands is zero threat to the PSU kingdom. In five years, DT may be a threat.
I don't believe Taylor is a threat to claim the King of the Mountain title, but I do believe he positions OkieSt into the spot of PSU'S biggest and most regular challenger. DT, Kennedy, Gilman and Caldwell will out recruit and out develop Iowa in relatively short order. What will be funny is reading GIA this year and probably next as the Hawks with their 4 recruits and 6 transfers edge Okie St in a dual and probably NCAAs. TnT is in Taylor's head, TnT own Taylor, blah, blah and blah. A regurgitation of the 2009, 2010 and January 2011 silliness directed towards Cael and PSU only to have to relive the same outcome as before.

Oh, I’ve thought the exact same thing about next year between the 2 teams. Classic win the battle, lose the war scenario shaping up

I get some Gavin Teasdale vibes at times - remember Gavin killing everyone there for a time? Some phenoms pan out well - Spencer Lee, etc; some flame out.

Okay - we know about the big fish but what other recruits make sense for this class? Don't forget, the late bloomers are often the best of them all (we see that with Mesenbrink and Haines) I know every top PA kid Cael pitches on taking a chance and this is a deep PA class.

I know both Flo and Willie mentioned Michael Mocco as a wildcard since Steve is an ATT coach as well so imagine there might be a connection to Bo.

PA Kids
Keanu Dillard - excellent free season
Dean Bechtold (we need heavyweight bodies as is)
Tyler Dekraker - looked fantastic against Seidel
Cael Weidemoyer - a PA 184 named Cael? Come on, we have to ask
Sam Herring - McCort kid who Willie projects at 149
Camden Baum - super high on him to rise later and projects at 149
Adam Watters- will be entering a jam here at his weight

PSU survived Marsteller, Haines, and asked leaving. It’s one weight. Cael needs five guys to shine and get him over 100 and few teams can match it.

Scott Moore calling Marsteller in HS paid off a couple years later.

Anybody unwilling to make even a token call to the top in-state prospect shouldn't be in coaching.
Yes, and in college coaching, one of the worst things you can do is be “the coach that didn’t even call” or “the coach that didn’t even visit”
You’ll never get Bo but you might get another kid in 2 years from that coach. That’s who you’re recruiting here. Then maybe sometimes, like you say, you get the token call kid a few years later.

The opposite of what Bo is doing would be releasing a school list of the top programs and saying "Don't even bother if you aren't these schools because you aren't good enough" I think that would reflect more poorly on him than saying "I'm open to anything"

He even said he will narrow down visits ultimately but he looks forward to hearing from everyone who wants to give him a ring. He won't waste any coaches time or money. I candidly don't think he has much time to waste himself.

Yeah, and it’s a 2 way street. You never know when someone on a rung “beneath” you (e.g. a former intern/subordinate) becomes a “boss” down the line. Never hurts to be nice (unless you’re dealing with sociopaths)

The whole “I want to be the face of a program” theory that Flo was supposing about Bassett is kind of interesting. Honest question but is that mentality indicative of a lack of humility that could be viewed as a red flag?

I’m not saying it is or isn’t, just posing the question.

It’s a reddish flag to me. It isn’t a great look.

That theory isn't worth the paper to wipe...
A couple of FLO fanboys trying to make Iowa recruiting relevant.

Has Bassett had any issue sharing the spotlight with his McCort teammates? It seems to me that he wants to surround himself with the best talent to train with. Hell, he and Jax were at the same weight for a short time.

I don't know anything about where he's going but I'm pretty sure I know as much about his destination as those guys.

That part of the show desperately needed Askren to throw cold water on the whole thing. You can’t take the small town Iowa provincialism out of JD.

It’s going to take another 15 years of canings before some get it.

Why do they have to call?
Cause you, as a coach, would be doing your program a great disservice if you didn't.

If Bo ultimately desires to be a star of a program Clarion is only a couple hours drive. He could probably get damn close to a full ride there, assuming Clarion has a full 9.9.

You make a lot of sense. Unlike some of those Flo guys much of the time.

Son of a bitch, I guess St John finally closed the gap with Taylor.

Clarion does not have 9.9. I don’t believe midnight calls mean squat in the grand scheme of the universe.
