50 years ago today (10/17) -- Great day for the Pirates

Watching Blass when the game ended was a display of pure joy. Much like our win over OSU in 2016, an outburst of joy over a wide area. Like the blast Maz hit a few days earlier in Oct., 1960, an outburst of joy pent up for many years. Moments like that are epic.

I don’t know what the oddsmakers said but between 1960 against Yankees and this series against the Birds the Bucco’s had to be 2 of the larger underdogs in World Series history.
Lots of amazing aspect to the 1960 World Series, but the stat that stands out IMO is total runs for the Series:

Yankees 55
Pirates 27

But, like time of possession or yardage in football, such a stat doesn't matter when the final results are:
Pirates 4 wins
Yankees 3 wins

Pirates were significant underdogs in both, but managed to win. But neither of those were the longest odds against an underdog in World Series history.

That would have to be the 1927 World Series -- in which, once again, the Bucs were the hapless underdog. That one didn't turn out so well though. Ruth, Gehrig and the Yankees steamrolled the Pirates in four straight.

And in both series (1971 and !979) against Baltimore, the Bucs dug their way out of a big hole (0-2 and 1-3) to win.
