Surprised so many are picking Dake over JB. I'm one of them, but I'm still surprised.
I picked Dake also--- but he has to beat JB best of 3--JB --that is a tall order for anyone-----just hard to believe that Nolf is at the weight and he is not really in the conversation.

I'll gladly admit it if I'm wrong, but it's probably to Dake's advantage now in the finals.
Scoring three times on that guy will be quite a feat.

On a side note, if Hall is at this weight is he in the conversation?

I was wondering about Martinez. He's been 100% radio silent since beating Nolf many moons ago. I know he had shoulder surgery but the fact that we hadn't seen him at ANY events since then did not bode well.

Hope he gets back to full strength again. Having more hammers at any given weight makes everyone better.

If Hall was 74KG -I don not think he is in the conversation this cycle. I truly do think that we will see this much talent in 1 weight class again

Graduating years;

Not an age comparison, which would be better. Some went 4 straight through college, others did not. Burroughs longevity is impressive. Didn't happen this Olympics, as Burrough's is still competitive, though Dake is a formidable challenge. I'll go Dake and a slight changing of the guard at this Olympic weight. 2024 (at 74 kg) appears to be well-stocked at this weight class too.

Burroughs - 2011
Dake - 2013
Nolf - 2019
Marsteller - 2019
Gantt - 2016
Massa - 2021
Carr - Sophomore in 2021 (3 years to wrestle)
Wick - Senior in 2021 (1 year to wrestle)

Above are the top seeds. Include; Martinez, Griffith, Valencia, and Joseph too for 2024 and beyond!

maybe this has been covered somewhere else on this board, but i haven't seen it. this bracket from flo has got to be wrong, or this is absurd:

nolf would get a bye in the semis while dake has to wrestle a semi? that doesn't make any sense. i would make the seeds in the quarters total to 7 (so 1v6, 2v5, 3v4) instead of 9 since we're basically missing 2 quarterfinalists. (the round of 16 would only have 6v7.) then i would give dake the winner of the 3v4 since he's the de facto 0 seed (1 better than the 1) and make the winner of 1v6 and 2v5 face each other.

i feel like it would be a lot less confusing if they just said dake is the 1 seed and there is no 8 or 9, which is who he would have faced in the quarters as the 1 seed. basically everyone would move down 1 seed except cenzo would move down 3, then seed everything normally.

When I heard “gets a bye to the semi-finals of the challenge tournament”, I thought this meant that one entire half of the bracket would be empty with Dake getting a bye through it.

It does. The bracket is just setup wrong.

it means he's automatically 1 of the 4 guys in the semifinals, so a quarter of the bracket would be empty, not half. so dake's 'half' of the bracket is set up correctly (though not with the right guys flowing into it if you ask me). the problem with the bracket above is that it has 2 quarters of the bracket empty, with no one in the empty quarter on the top half. if there was a world medalist from 70kg bumping up, he would go there, but there isn't.

The Semi in this bracket is Dake vs the field. The Final is JB vs the field.

Saying the same thing, different words...
The semifinals are actually the second round in an 8-man bracket. Since Dake is "inserted", it means that there are 5 guys in the semifinals. Hence the added round to eliminate one guy (the Dake bout). Jason's semifinal bout is the winner of Carr/Massa.

For anyone that wonders where the diagram came from, see page 9 here...

page 9 includes spots for 2 world medalists though. if they used that bracket, the 2 or 3 seed would need to win 3 matches to make the challenge tournament finals whereas the 4 or 5 would only need to win 2 matches.

this is my proposal:

this way, the worse seeded guys need to wrestle more matches to make the finals

it's a shame USA Wrestling hasn't cleared this up yet, it should be a simple twitter post with what the brackets would look like if everyone shows up

edit: reading the words in the manual and not just looking at the pictures is hard for me. once i did that, it seems like they're going to just use that bracket anyway "If there is one 2019 Senior World Championships medalist in a non‐Olympic weight category entering the Olympic weight category, that individual will be placed in the bottom semifinal (Part One). " that's so dumb.

I have it drawn up the same.

brackets are on trackwrestling and nolf is shown in the semis and carr-massa is a quarter. marsteller and gantt getting screwed by being the 2 and 3. 4 and 5 have a much easier path to the finals. lunacy.
