Question: with Stevens coming back and Clifford & Justin Fields coming in, will there be any movement to the current roster?

None of the two you have mentioned have signed on the dotted line, and one is 13 months away from doing so.

Fields doesn't come until 2018. Major programs seem to recruit at least one quality QB every class, so it sometimes becomes an issue and can lead to a transfer or two. We'll see how it goes.

Fields is a 2018 commit which is a long time from now. Frankly, I would be surprised if he sticks as there will be a lot of recruiting pressure on him to "stay close to home" from all the SEC and ACC schools. Even if he does come to PSU, he is a long, long way from stepping on the field in a starting role (calendar wise - not talent wise).

Still using that old PSU Qb logic. You forgot a QB on the roster... and we could use 2 in 2018 and 2 every year after that...... What exempts the QB position from the need for competitive depth like is needed at every other position in your feeble mind. Heck all one needs is one Dan Kendra and they are all set at QB (Ya right)....... How many QB's in house at ND? Clemson? WTF makes PSU unique in this way?

No need to worry about anything here for a while. Stevens saw decent action for a backup and I think everyone was very comfortable with what he brought to the table. Having him re-affirm his commitment with McSorely still having 2 years left was great to see b/c I imagine he'd have some attractive opportunities if he wanted to transfer.

Clifford and Fields will surely redshirt and not even enter the equation until McSorely graduates so the only one I worry about may be Zembiac, but not until he gets to his RS junior year.

I'm concerned about the nature of Clifford's injury that he just had surgery for (torn labrum on his throwing shoulder can be a significant setback) but he should have a lot of time to rehab.

We don't have too many QBs but we do have 3 guys bunched together age wise. I guess in a perfect world we would have a senior, a junior, a sophomore, and a freshman. Instead we had a RS sophomore, a RS freshman, and a true freshman.

The other thing to consider is they type of QB Franklin recruits. The dual threat guys aren't as likely to leave early for the NFL. Just look at Barrett for OSU. On the other hand things were looking bad for Wimbush at ND. All of a sudden he's a likely starter.

Clifford (2017) and Fields (2018) should be fine. The question is if Stevens and Zembiec are going to hang around for all 4 years. Stevens is sone play away from being our starter but he could also be backup until his senior year. Even then he has to beat our a couple of other kids. Zembiec is in a similar situation.

My concern has been Stevens. No doubt he could have had opportunities elsewhere. But he still has a two year starting opportunity here, and I imagine that was his thinking. We're fortunate he's staying.

And that is called competitive depth. Zembiec is 2 plays away from starting.

Important to realize he's still only going to be a RS sophomore next year. Equally important to know if a program is going to be successful they need a solid backup to step in and be ready. I think Stevens knows he's still in a very good position...and a very important role for the team. We're fortunate given the nature of the system where the QB is running that Trace managed to make it though without missing any starts. He's a warrior but did take a beating at times.

What kind of defeatist attitude is this?

He's the leader of this class, is recruiting other players to join him aggressively, is a very intelligent young man who gave a lot of thought to his recruitment, and has given zero indication that he is interested in other schools or will take visits.

Save the pessimism for when it's warranted.

Fields: "I’m fully committed. I made sure that I got out to see all the schools that I had a lot of interest in, so I’m 100-percent committed. I know Penn State is the right place for me. I’m not going to other schools. All I care about is getting better for next year. "

McSorley is a senior in 2017 (with eligibility to 2018)
Stevens is a junior in 2017 (with eligibility to 2019)
Zembiec is a soph in 2017 (with eligibility to 2020)

we have to committed but unsigned
Clifford would be FR in 2017 (injured and eligible to 2021)
Fields would be FR in 2018 (eligible to 2022)

if this list is all 4/5* players they are very unlikely to go to 5th year. If Trace has another year like this year, he is not here in 2018. he would have degree and NFL contract. If he does not do as well, and decides to stay, there will be 1-2 transfers, assuming the last two sign. transfers at QB are normal stuff from the top programs who recruit the top players.

It's a fine example of the many uninformed then make shit up typical loser posts on this board that bothers the shit out of me.... too. Why do fans do it?

Look at the Raiders. They were rolling into the playoffs with Carr playing great. Then he gets hurt and McGloin is thrown into service. He got banged up last week, and rookie Connor Cook got the call. I don't know McGloin's status, but Cook may see the field in the playoffs.

EDIT: I just read on espn.com that Cook will start in the playoff game against the Texans.

Because 16 year old kids never change their minds, do they?

We should be sure to lose sleep over what a 16-year-old will do, especially when he has given no indication of backing off from a commitment.

That's a little confusing. Your ideal scenario is one QB in each year. That is exactly what we have eligibility-wise. Next year McSorley will be JR, Stevens SO, Zembiec FR, and Clifford RS. Then the next year Fields. One QB/class. If one of the younger guys beats out a guy ahead of him, and does not redshirt, so be it. Competition.

FWIW - i think it may be a bad assumption that each guy stays at PSU for 5 years. in modern CFB, many top guys go in 4 years, so never see a 5th, even if they were eligible (i.e. Sickels, Austin Johnson) - it is not fair to even call this leaving early. many others are going in 3 years (i.e. Godwin).

these elections to leave in 3 or stay for 5 can really upset the serial QB list like we have (or plan to have with current HS players).

Simply stated, there's many a slip tween a cup and a lip.

No seniors or juniors this year but it worked out. I agree that things should be fine going forward.

Never lose an opportunity to be miserable over something, even if it's imaginary.

Guys, just for the record, I am hardly "miserable". I get "emotionally involved" in the results on the field of play on Saturday afternoons. Saturdays are much better when PSU wins and certainly not as fun when they lose. That is the extent of my emotional involvement regarding PSU football.

I do not spend one moment of my time following or worrying about where 16-18 year old kids decide to go to college. I am undoubtedly one of the least engaged fans on this board when it comes to recruiting. I don't subscribe or follow any of the recruiting sites or experts. I don't twitter, facebook, snapchat or anything else, so I have no idea what these kids are saying or doing except when something is posted/linked on this board. Sure, I am aware of recruiting simply because I follow this board.

Simply put, I start paying attention to these kids when they show up on the field at PSU. I am not disparaging those who are more interested in recruiting than I, but it's just not my thing.

Regarding my comments about our 2018 qb commit, I was recently talking to a friend of mine in Atlanta who is a big time Georgia fan and follows recruiting carefully. He was aware of this kid's commitment to PSU and thought highly of his talent level. He made some comment to me about how "UGA still intends to flip this kid" and I joked with him that if he was as good as he thought, UGA wouldn't be the only school in the southeast that will try to flip him.

Undoubtedly, the kid will continue to be pursued by every big time school in the SEC and ACC. That's hardly "making shit up". My opinion is that I will be surprised if he sticks with PSU and doesn't wind up closer to home. If he comes to PSU - that's great. I hope he leads us to the national championship in 2020. If he stays south, that's his choice. Either way, I won't lose any sleep over it.

Since you admitted you don't follow recruiting at all, your opinion on Fields isn't worth much.

Tell your friend that PSU is going to be the better team overall with the better offense until he enrolls. Fields is a part of a monster recruiting class we're going to sign. Talent begets talent. That's how it goes. Unless and until Moorhead leaves, this kid stays.

Question: with Stevens coming back and Clifford & Justin Fields coming in, will there be any movement to the current roster?

I wish CJF and Jo-Mo would consider a two-headed QB. They could give Tommy Stevens a series or two each half running a different look - a no back offense with SB lined up in a traditional Flanker position (i.e., TS running out of the Wildcat). Be a good change of pace - especially in short-yardage and redzone situations that would really put stress on defenses given that TS and that type of offense is really a completely different look.

My attitude about recruiting is pretty much the same as yours- which is why I can't understand how or why you would form any opinion at all about this particular kid or of any other kid.
