About 20% empty seats in Gainesville.

Fla St. game looked like a NASCAR race last week as well...
Speaking of NASCAR - and I know this is off topic - why has the popularity of it plummeted? I never really followed it, although I did get a kick out of some acquaintances who put a lot of emotional energy into the WWE of racing. I'm sure there are many factors. MM II, you just seem like the right poster to ask the question.

A combination of issues

Many tracks overbuilt when they added seating in the late 90s and early 2000's thinking the salad days were forever.

The addtion to the Chase/Playoff/Whatever we call it today annoyed traditionalists .Also the seemingly constant rule changes.

Many don't like the cookie-cutter approach where the differences between makes now is mostly "what are the headlight and tail light decals"

Their demographic is aging, and like most other sports it seems the younger generation does not care as much for auto racing as previous.

Also cost, tickets, hotel, etc, have gotten out of hand.

I would guess that folks in the South are still spending their free time engaging in storm clean-up activities involving themselves and others.

How aloof are we?

As for Pitt fans, there just are not many of those.

Agree with all of the above. I'll add the death of Earnhardt Sr., the constantly changing rules, the relative "sameness" of the manufacturers' production and the lack of enduring "feuds" among drivers (although there are some, they are not like the Earnhardt/Gordon/Wallace provincialism of the 90's). Depending on track venue, some tickets are still pretty reasonable but indeed some are extremely out of whack with their prices. On-track attendance is so poor across the board that no track even announces attendance anymore. I don't pay attention to tv ratings but I'm sure they're not good either.

The people I know who had energy for it were emotionally involved in the JJ, Gordon, Jr. rivalry. Funny thing was that the Jr. fans admitted that he wasn't much of a rival, but they just loved the guy.

I have been to Pocono for several races where Dale Jr. wrecked out early in the race or had something blow up on him and fans of his walked out 20 or 30 laps in. This is not an anecdotal thing either. His fans all over are notorious for it. I don't understand it, but it's surely a testimony to the popularity of his father. He's a likeable driver too, don't get me wrong.

That's twice.

WE ARE...ALOOF!

FOOTBALL.

GET. TO. THE. GAME.

Both Pitt and NASCARS' attendance issues are for the same reason. There are just too many other fine cultural things to do like the symphony, opera, and arts fest to take the time to go to those events.

Well, I went over to that site - lost my discipline - to find out if there was any talk there about ways to reignite the Pitt fan base. Below is the thread. Warning: Depression May Ensue.

Too funny - the idiot says they should bring back the Penn State sucks cheer - yeah and join Butgers in one of the stupidest "traditions" in college football - a cheer that rips on a team that is light years better than you will ever be - I got to believe normal people cringe when they hear that.

Excellent response... i'd add that drivers have gone away and/or evolved from good ol' boys to corporate spokespersons... alienating the traditional mouthbreather-type NASCAR follower...

As a guy who follows different forms of motorsport (somewhat), the NASCAR product is simply bad - starting with the formula... i'd suggest Aussie V8 Supercars , British Touring Car Series, German Touring Car Championship, WRC as all being superior ...

Not the most intelligent reply... on our WORST day (against the lamest of opponents) we have seen little problem sticking 88k in the Beav
That's 20,000 empty seats. 88k is nothing to sneeze at. But empty seats d9nt look good
But we are one of a handful of stadiums that seat over 100k

88k is better than every Sunday stadium except maybe one, two? BH Griffin Stadium holds around 85k ... that program should not have an issue being at capacity for an SEC contest

Why the decline of NASCAR... hmmm, maybe even drunken rednecks are getting tired of watching an over-regulated sport consisting of hours and hours of left hand turns.

Just a thought.

Watkins Glen (road course) is still thriving. I think that change-up combined with the Finger Lakes region being pleasant to visit in the summer is the reason. Also there is only one race a year at Watkins compared to two at a lot of other tracks.
