Was driving home to Ohio last evening from eastern shore of Maryland with my co-worker (huge OSU fan). We turn on the OSU broadcast and the calls on the games by Paul Keels (sp?) are given over to commercials such as: "OSU in a Big Sandies 3rd down" or "OSU is in the Giant Eagle red zone", etc, etc. Is this normal for other college radio broadcasts? Cheapens the effect of the broadcast.

Any feedback appreciated.

Yup radio rights are sold by the schools themselves, usually to small stations on an individual basis

Its every sport. Its a spill over from television. This done because people change stations during full commercials to check other games. Embedded commercials have more impact.

Disappoints me that the radio broadcasts are being tainted by this type of commercialism because it really detracts from the broadcast. They already have plenty of commercials during breaks in the action; now they invade the actual play by play broadcasting.

Don't disagree, but, again, most of the radio stations that carry college football are small in small markets. Commercial spots often sell for a couple of hundred bucks. When you're dealing with those kinds of economics the only way to pay the help and the electric bill is lots of commercials.

I don't see how one sentence can distract anybody from the football game. The sentence is over in a flash.

I can hear it now from Steve Jones - "Touchdown Penn State!!! American Airlines. The official touchdown sponsor of Penn State athletics. Touch down safely with American Airlines."

That right there is why I am NOT in advertising.

It's really nothing all that new, shades of Mel Allen's 'Ballantine Blasts' from the Yankees in the '50's.

I do get that is kinda annoying and minor league. OTOH you're getting the games on the radio for free, at least until somebody develops 'pay-per-listen'.

Another Dietz & Watson touchdown pass from Sean Clifford, or a 5 yd.Middleswarth Barbeque rushing TD from the Lawn Boyz.

IN the same vein, perhaps Rutgers should get American Standard to promote their toilets. When the Scarlet Knight's qb can't find an open receiver, it's the American Standard SHI Bowl dump of the week.
