A friend of mine was the Godfather of a recent graduate from the Alabama Football Program.
He said the best part of the program was the kid never had to go to a class.
Each football player gets a student assistant who has the job of keeping the player eligible.
The assistant is paid well to do that. 1) The asst. searches out classes that they can pass.
2) The student attends their classes and provides them the notes so they never have to go to class.
3) The asst. reads the books and outlines the important material. 3) Often times the asst.
takes the exam in advance so they can tutor the player on the exam.4) They avoid classes with
papers but when necessary they essentially write the papers.
In other words, the player never has to go to class, unless required. NEVER.
How widespread is this? Prior to the Kentucky Game, one of their alums told me that they do
the same thing. He reminded me that they won the national BB with five freshman who immediately
Went pro. He said, “ do you think we give a shit about them going to school?”
That’s when I knew we were in trouble because from the last game to the Bowl Game, the players didn’t have to go to school. ( Didn’t have to improve their team 2.13 average)
I am sure this is the same at Clemson, Georgia, etc.
The reality is this. These are semi pro teams and while PSU is not Harvard, our kids still have
to go to school, still have real Majors. I kept this in mind, because there are a ton kids who have no interest in school, but only a quick path to the NFL. I hope we never have to choose that path.
We all think PSU is the best but there are a number of reasons kids may not choose us.
Trucking across campus to the Forum in Jan. to attend class, vs someone coming to your dorm to spoon feed you info is one of them. We still turn out student athletes. That’s who we are.
