First, college football has really changed and experience is far less important than ever before. I remember how Don Nehlen would redshirt entire classes at WVU in the hopes that once every 5 years he would have a powerhouse team. No need to do that anymore. All of the FR o-linemen who are starting has been widely discussed on these boards. But going even further, I heard Reece Davis say that Clemson lost every single starting lineman, offense and defense, from last year. So they replaced all 9 linemen and are number 1. Amazing. Now obviously this means they have recruited some really high end talent that was available to replace those 9 kids. But I think this may bode well for PSU as we are recruiting well. I think we should embrace this trend and set our expectations high. Specifically, the thread last night that speculated Stoops could leave because PSU must rebuild its line. Really, we just need to replace our tackles. The rest of the defense should be set. Though we may not have recruited 5 star DT's look at the offers Cothran, White, Windsor, Carter and Dioubate had. We have pretty nice talent at DT although not much experience. Didn't even mention Bucholtz who I think is going to be a beast.
Second observation is the huge impact graduate transfers and transfers who are being granted immediate eligibility are having. Baker Mayfield, Rudock, the Pitt QB, the Oregon QB, Bama has a nice receiver who transferred from Oregon State, Stanford has a DT who transferred from Cal. I'm sure there are many others. As it relates to PSU, it would certainly be very helpful if we could add a veteran DT who could join Cothran and White to give us a third guy with experience. That could be huge. Also, though I doubt PSU would be in the market for a QB, the kid who started most of the year at FL is transferring, as are former starters at at Oklahoma and Texas Tech. If you are those kids and looking for schools to transfer to, I would think PSU, without a veteran QB, would be a place you would put on your short list.
