If someone succeeds Kane before her term expires or Gansler finishes, the successor can simply ask Gansler for whatever work he has accomplished up to that point, bury it, thank him for his efforts, and pay him as per the contract requirements. End game. For sure that is what will be attempted. The SC ethics commission tried to do just that with Eakin.
Response 1
"Oh there is nothing here to see in his emails. McCaffery needs to go but Eakin can stay".
Response 2
"Oh wait Kane never gave us THOSE Eakin emails".
Response 3
"Ahhh, oh yeah, we did get them from Kane, but we really didn't look at them."
Response 4 after continuous public pressure is brought to bear
"OK, OK, OK, UNCLE!!!! .... we suspend Eakin WITH PAY until this mess gets sorted out, ALRIGHT...SATISFIED? Geez you people are acting like he doesn't have the ethics to sit on the SUPREME COURT bench or something."
The only way they didn't succeed was because Kane was still there dangling the rest of the porn emails. Then the stacking of the deck was attempted with the "friend of Eakin" appointment. Again the only reason that was looked at was because Kane was still in office, still dangling the porn emails. Once she's gone it will be back to status "corrupt" quo and no one in the general public will know what is really going on. She may not be lily white, but boy she has done the commonwealth a service for sure, and I couldn't care any less what her motives are. To shovel this septic tank clean, someones boots are going to have to get dirty.
