Now that retirement is here.... I'm looking to visit the Phoenix area for a 30 day stay. The stay will be late February into March. I'm really into pickleball and I'd imagine that there are many places to play. I'd also like to hike and bike the desert/mountain areas in the area. I'm NOT a golfer.
Question: would it be better to stay on the outskirts of town for better access to the desert and mountains? I'd rather drive as little as possible. Or do Phoenix or surrounding cities offer easy access to all activities.
Last, I'm looking on AirBNB.... any other suggestions are appreciated :)
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

For Pickleball, use the app Places to Play. It provides locations and times for play just about everywhere. We use it when we travel and have found some great venues and friends.

Cave Creek, thank me later. I go twice a year and stay at a house in Tonto Hills which is the very eastern edge of civilization. A mile east is Tonto Forest. Let me find the link to house I rent. It is an individual owner, not corporate. I’ll dig up some pictures too.

edit 2: link to house https://www.vrbo.com/665683?noDates=true&unitId=1213609

edit: first four are from the house, fifth from Camelback in Phoenix, sixth the rodeo ring in back of Buffalo Chip Saloon in Cave Creek.

Lovely area and weather during the time you've chosen. Got married there back in '74. It rained and then rained on the day we left and shut down the airport. I'll avoid the state in Feb. and March just for you. At least the marriage is still wonderful.

I've favored the NW portion of the city when visiting, but lots of great attractions everywhere. I've called 2 or 3 hotels before coming out because we used to take 3 dachshunds with us. The concierge can usually tell you all about the local sports and fine dining even before you decide to book AirBNB may not have the best info. Check on the Internet setup. The last one we used wasn't functional. I had to buy some cabling and repair it to watch wrestling.

Shopping centers abound. The Arizona Desert Museum is a must. Some great steak houses with waitresses fro the local college. We could even dine outside with our dogs and fabulous service since many of the young ladies missed their pets. Hope you have a wonderful time. Remember that when the sun goes down the temperature can plummet. Layers of clothing can help. Have a great trip.

Where is your place in Tonto Hills? My brother and his wife live there too - N. Deer Trail Road.

Edit: I missed seeing the link in your post. The house where you stay is just a stone's throw from my brother's place. If you go to the bottom of E Quail Lane and turn right, his house is three houses away on the East side of the road!

To PointingDogsRule - amattaro is right on the money. It's a beautiful area. Just watch your speed in Carefree or you'll be looking at a pricey ticket.

If you are into duck hunting, you might want to try Tempe. 😁

AMAZING!!!! It's all booked up for our dates. I have a fellow co-worker that has a place in Cave Creek. He offered the house, however, I'm not sure the dates were open. I was thinking that was too far from the excitement... however, after seeing your photos... I am seriously reconsidering!!!! WOW!!!!!

Full disclosure, the urban amenity stuff doesn’t do much for me. I prefer to stay north of the 101 and east of 17. I’ll occasionally go into Scottsdale for the farmers market. Cave Creek and Carefree are small but have enough of the modern amenities for me. If I can get in a few miles on a mountain early in the morning, whatever the kids want to do the rest of the day is good enough for me.

City Creamery ice cream and The Meat Market of Cave Creek for sure. There are some Indian ruins a few miles east of Tonto Hills. Easy hike. Toms Thumb about 30 min to Troon and Camelback probably 45. Dolly Steamboat might be of interest if you haven’t done it. Bartlett Dam is Cave Creek adjacent if you want to take a boat or jet skis out on the water. Side by side rentals in town if that’s your thing.

Tell your brother I hope housing goes tits up so I can buy a second home there! Anywhere off Cave Creek Rd east of Pima is where I am looking to retire.

If you do stay in Cave Creek and you're a Steeler's fan, make sure you drop into Harold's. It's on the main road. The owners are transplants from Pittsburgh and they brought their Pittsburgh culture with them. It caught on big. When the Steelers played the Cardinals in the Super Bowl back around 2009 or so, the place was totally jammed and they had several big tents set up outside. There were probably 2000+ people there!

Been to PHX a few times. Familiar with the N-S-E, less familiar with the west and NW.

The suburbs have tons of outdoorsy stuff within the bypass freeways. So I'd stay in Scottsdale, Tempe, or maybe near downtown Mesa -- to also be close to cultural stuff and restaurants. (But it will be more expensive, and your dates are peak season.)

For wide-open desert stuff or frequent road tripping outside the area, stay near the 101 loop (NE) or 202 loop (SE). There are a lot of nice places in these sections (including Cave Creek), and you can do lots of good outdoors stuff there, but they can be a haul from anything else. It really depends on how often you wish to do stuff closer to Scottsdale.

I wouldn't stay in the city. Maybe in some weird geographical corner with a city address but is more suburban (like near Camelback Mtn). PHX is like LA in that it's a giant sprawl with tons of traffic, and most of the interesting stuff is away from downtown.

Other than the hiking and biking, I'd recommend:
- Desert Botanical Garden (Scottsdale)
- MLB spring training
- Heard Museum (downtown PHX) - great Native American museum
- Taliesin West (NE Scottsdale) -- Frank Lloyd Wright house
- Old Town Scottsdale: historical museum, contemporary arts museum, tons of restaurants + bars
- Organ Stop Pizza (Mesa) -- live organ recitals with cheap pizza/beer
- Rawhide Wild West Town (Chandler) -- theme park, good for a fun (and cheesy) western-themed dinner

For a day trip, go north to Sedona (note, 4300 ft elevation, will be colder, may get snow/ice): Red Rock State Park, Chapel of the Holy Cross. Stop at Montezuma Castle National Monument on the way. I like Flagstaff but would skip it in Feb/Mar unless you want to ski (plus it would add enough time to justify overnights).

For a few days, go south to Tucson: Saguaro National Park, Pima Air/Space Museum, Desert Museum (zoo), Old Tucson movie set/theme park, Titan Missile Museum, Kitt Peak National Observatory.

Better yet, if you’re looking to do something really different, go to the Scottsdale Gun Club and rent a full auto M16, AK-47 or one of the other full auto models that they are legally licensed to rent out. (You have to fire it on their range. It’s not like a tool rental shop)
