I have not followed the Women's World Cup very closely, but from what I have heard, the U.S. plays great defense. How good is Japan? Who do you think will win tonight?

USA - 2
Japan - 0

In the immortal words of Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn, "Bet your house on it."

I hope you're right.

And there are a couple Penn Staters on the U.S. team, correct? I know of Ali Krieger. Is there another Penn Stater on the team?

Alyssa Naeher is the other former Lion on the USWNT. Japan is far superior to the U.S. in technical and tactical skill but the U.S. has a strength and height advantage on set pieces.

Interesting match-up. The 2 teams met 4 years ago in the finals of the last World Cup. The 2 teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. (US up 1-0, then Japan tied it.) They then were tied 2-2 at the end of extra time (again, US up by a goal, but Japan scored with 3 minutes remaining off of a corner). As such, it went to PKs to determine the winner, and Japan won 3-1 in the PKs.

The US had quite a few scoring opportunities in the 2011 World Cup final. They were just off frame, or Japanese goalie Kaihori made a nice save. I recall worrying that all the missed opportunities would come back to haunt the US, and in the end they did.

The Japanese employ a very intricate passing attack. No other team has such a precise system.

The Japanese have yet to lose in this year's World Cup. The only game they appeared vulnerable in was the semifinal, when the British approach was to use high pressure (forwards don't sit back, but attack the defenders before they can get comfortable and pick where to pass). The US switched formations and also used high pressure in semifinal game (against Germany), and looked to be a better team when they employed that tactic than they had in their previous games, so I would expect to see high pressure from the US. To counter that, Japan is probably going to swing the ball around the back quickly, and try to use their passing system up the sidelines.

It should be an excellent game. If the US played as they did in their past two games, then they should win, but soccer can be a funny sport, especially at the elite levels.

Thanks, Tom. Excellent detailed analysis. Much appreciated. Some of your comments as well as Philly Lion's comments have me a bit worried.

Agree with much of what Tom says. US did not look very good IMO in the early bracket because they sat back too much. In the last two games they have attacked and put pressure up at the top and forced errors. It will be interesting to see if they continue the attack or because Japan is so technically sound they don't want to do that.

my observations for the last few games is that Japan is more methodical, has better spacing, and passes the ball a LOT better than any other team I have watched.

But USA is bigger, stronger, and faster than Japan and should be able to continue to use their size and speed to keep the ball on Japan's half of the field. Hope Solo has played extremely well in goal, looking for her 6th straight shutout.

Abby Wambach's leadership and footwork will be critical in the later stages of the game, especially if the US has a lead to protect. Japan really got a break on England's own goal last match, so there may be a slight dip in their confidence that they didn't "win" to advance to the final.

2-0 USA sounds like a great score, but things get wonky in the finals. I'll mix it up and say 3-1 USA.

There is no team in the world that is quote "far superior to the U.S in technical and tactical skill". I told this board the U.S. is the best team in the world before the tournament started and nothing that has happened has changed my mind. We have the best forward, best attacking MF, best GK and best defense. It took Aunt Jill a while to figure it out, but now that she has I expect a convincing US win. Something on the order of 3-0.

This thread can't be considered an official thread until MMII gives his prediction. Don't let me down again MMII.

One indirect connection too - though Meghan Klingenberg went to UNC, her brother is currently on the PSU men's team.

The U.S. looked much better the last two games with Wambach on the bench. If there's a one goal difference tonight in the second half, she likely won't see much playing time IMO. Too slow.

Yes Supertodd I said that as soon as I saw that. I was going to set the record straight, but you have done that already. Watching the game as I post this it looks like the United States squad is easily Japan's equal in technical skill. the United States set pieces are works of art

SuperTodd knows his ball - no doubt about that. I watched the Japanese semi and thought we'd bully them. GlAd we had our shooting boots on and put them away early.

Brian LB-U ... I agree with your statement totally. When the coach decided to let the others play, these ladies responded. Too much talent on this team to force the offense to one striker ... seemed like all the time.

Also appeared to me that the defenders got a lot more "offensive" when they got into the knockout rounds. Krieger and Klingenberg took more runs and Krieger especially seemed to have a knack for making a really good mid-range pass to enable USA scoring opportunities.

I enjoyed watching all Team USA's matches. Great to see these ladies win, feel bad for the Japanese women, but they were simply overmatched.
