Do you think he's going to make a big impact at DT this year?

I hope his impact is that when he comes on the field, we don't collectively groan that the defense is about to get gashed for 40 yards because the subs are in.

85% chance he's a depth piece
13% chance he redshirts
2% chance he is a game changing stud this year

he's going to end up having to make a big jump from ODU to PSU. For the Bloggy has a good review. Basically, if he doesn't gain weight, he'll be a one-tech kid that does a lot of stunting as he is pretty quick on his feet for a big guy. Or, he gets up over 300 and can play four downs that include being a run-stopper.

The video was made when he was 280 and I now believe he is pushing 300 lbs. Is he able to keep his quicks? I don't know. Regardless, he'll be going up against much bigger, stronger and faster Centers/Guards in the B1G and I'd imagine that will take some time to get used to.

New Penn State football transfer defensive lineman graded as a top 10 DT in the Big Ten conference

Alonzo Ford is one of the less-talked-about additions from the transfer portal for the Penn State Nittany Lions ahead of the 2023 season. However, as a huge interior defensive lineman, he is poised for a remarkable year in the Blue and White and is already one of the top-graded defensive tackles in the entire Big Ten conference.

Recently, Pro Football Focus (college) released its rankings of the top 10 graded Big Ten defensive linemen heading into the 2023 season, and Ford made the cut as the No. 9 player on the list.

That's from his name, which is a link in your post.

He will have to do some work to be more than #3 at either spot. I imagine he'll play similarly to how Durant was used last year.

287 on the current roster.

It'd be a huge win if Ford wasn't needed beyond 4 cameo appearances this season and was cool with redshirting so that he'd be available in 24 and 25. Hopefully he's smart enough to not let his ego get in the way and get pouty and transfer out if that happens. He's got Power 5 measureables in every category but weight and could use a full "sculpting" year under Losey.

Everything said in this thread was written about the player from Temple a few years. Just the names are different. And he turned out to be a huge addition.

No one knows how Ford will turn out. That’s part of the fun of sports.
Do you have to make so much sense? ;)

The good news is we have 3 years to get 2 from Ford.
Yep, but I don't believe he came to PSU to redshirt. Unfortunately, as there are a couple of DT's that won't be back after 2023 (Beamon and Ellies) and it would be great to have a more mature DT that has been in the program for a year to be one of the leaders of the DT group in 2024 and 2025.

Franklin was recently very positive about the defense tackle room. Apparently they are working very hard and some have gained weight. There should be five rotation ready tackles, Ford should have the luxury of learning growing and getting stronger.

Yep, but the question still seems to be, would Ford be willing to only play in 4 games and redshirt in 2023 to maintain his 2 years of eligibility and potentially play at PSU in 2024 and 2025. Who really knows but it doesn't seem likely to me. JMO Most talented college football players are focused at least partially on getting to the NFL. Rarely have we seen even at PSU a player with NFL talent play out the string at PSU, even into a 4th year in a situation like Fashanu is doing. It will be interesting to see how fast Ford can get into the playing rotation.

Maybe, I get what you are saying. But if Ford would leave after a redshirt this year, he has 2 to play 2 anywhere, not just PSU. If his decision is based on playing time, he gets it nearly for certain at PSU in 2024 and 2025. That is unless some young guy steps up that we haven't heard about yet.
