Am I the only one who just assumed the Rose Bowl was New Year's Day??

I just went to set the game to record and was shocked it is Jan 2nd......

Is this just me?
the Pros have Sunday, so it was never going to be on a Sunday, the Holiday is Monday, so I guess you could say it is still on New Years.

don't feel bad - i broke the news to a colleague who has to work on the 2nd. not every business is honoring the 2nd like a holiday. the desire to not compete with NFL games (most of them meaningless this weekend) has driven the bowls to Monday.

I think it's certainly correct that the real driver of having the bowls on Monday is to avoid competing with the NFL. However, the Rose Bowl has a long history of not being held on a Sunday, going back to the very first Tournament of Roses, which consisted of jousting and chariot races instead of football (precursor to today's Renaissance Fairs, I guess). See excerpt below from this link:

"NEVER ON A SUNDAY" TRADITION

The Tournament of Roses® has had a “Never on Sunday” tradition since 1893, the first year since the beginning of the Tournament, that New Year’s Day fell on a Sunday. The Tournament wanted to avoid frightening horses that would be hitched outside churches and thus interfering with worship services so the events were moved to the next day, January 2. Though horses are no longer outside local churches, the tradition remains to this day.

Dang...maybe this is the bad news that is being predicted for the Rose Bowl, the team is scheduled to show up on Sunday instead of Monday to play the game;)o_O
