Amelia Earhart

He was the pilot and the navigator. She was merely a passenger. Officially, she was called “captain” but It was purely a stunt.

The flight/stunt was promoted by Admiral Byrd, Putnam (Amelia’s future husband) and a wealthy socialites family from Boston. It’s an interesting story.

Wilmer set another long distance record, flying nonstop from NYC to Havana also with a woman onboard.

His life is pretty interesting. His pilots license is numbered in the hundreds and was signed by Wilbur Wright himself. Pretty cool. Check out those links I posted.

Thanks, I did. You confused me a bit, but I see now that you initially said her first transatlantic flight.

I'm going to track down his grave in Williamsburg next time I'm in the Altoona area.
