I'm not exactly where to focus the blame. There is an article written by Greg Couch, who works for The Guardian. The article is now on Business Insider's web site. You can access it at THIS LINK.

The article is titled "How wrestling explains the American Midwest." It's actually an interesting article.

However, it contains the following gem:

"And he [Gable] talked about the success of schools at the smaller college level in Iowa. Meanwhile, Penn State, Ohio State and Minnesota have all built programs among the nation’s best – with head coaches who wrestled for Iowa. He envisioned them trying to break the attendance record now."

That would certainly be news to Cael Sanderson, and I believe J. Robinson as well.

Not sure if the fault is with the author, the editors at The Guardian, or the editors at Business Insider.

Tom - while not completely factual, J. Robinson coached at Iowa and Cael wrestled/coached at Iowa State. I think the author made a loose association with the state of Iowa.

Who had wrestling ties to the state of Iowa.

I think that is how it was meant to e implied.

If I had to guess, he's a British reporter (the Guardian is a British newspaper, after all). He'd be excused for thinking Iowa and Iowa State are the same school, even if us Americans wouldn't be.

A rare moment of laziness by the Pirate (though he did state it was a guess, and not based on his research).

Greg Couch's bio:
Couch previously worked for the NY Times, FoxSports.com, Bleacher Report, AOL's FanHouse.com, the Chicago Sun-Times, (Ohio) Beacon-Journal, Wichita (Kan.) Eagle and Savannah (Ga.) News-Press. As a youth, Couch lived in Western Springs (IL) and delivered the Chicago Daily News and Chicago Today.

Beyond that, the contention that Cael made PSU great from scratch, and implication he did it with Midwestern/Iowa wrestlers, is rather specious if you ask me. First of all, Rich Lorenzo presided over a program that was top 5 over his tenure not just in where they placed on average vs other programs, but also in terms of producing AAs, Individual Champions, etc... Beyond that, Cael inherited a lot of talent, even if it was being under-developed. Cael didn't do a whole lot of "building"....he just came right in and started doing a whole lot of winning! So aside from the faulty facts and insinuations, I'm not sure I agree with the writer's basic premise that Cael "built" a winner from scratch using his connections to the State of Iowa. Complete BS - Cael immediately started winning Championships by simply moving to Pennsylvania and tapping its legendary wrestling resources.

I'm confused. Who is contending that Cael built the program from scratch using Midwestern wrestlers? I didn't see that anywhere in the article.

Said it was "implied"; didn't say it was stated explicitly and I believe it is implied by the writer using terms such as "built" and attempting to draw an association to Iowa in regards to that building project.
