Another questionable recruiting move by USC?

The Trojans just signed a recruit named Bernard Schirmer, a big (6'6", 290) and apparently talented offensive lineman. He most recently played JC ball at Mt. San Antonio College in Southern California.

What makes this interesting, and controversial to say the least, is that he punched out a referee in a Mt. SAC football game. Below is the YouTube, link showing video of the punch.

Schirmer was initially arrested but never prosecuted. He claimed that he frequently punches his own helmet when he is frustrated, and that, because he was in a crowd of players and refs when the incident occurred, he actually (and inadvertently) hit the ref with his elbow. In any case, he clocked the ref, knocking him out.

He was suspended for five years by something called the Southern California Football Association, and announced his plan to appeal the suspension. The 247Sports article linked below says it is not clear what happened with the suspension, and it is not clear whether a ban by the Southern California Football Association would prevent him from playing CFB. In any event, Clay Helton said that after extensively evaluating Schirmer, the Trojans had "no question" that Schirmer will be "a great member of our Trojan football family."

I understand the idea of giving a kid a second chance, but the blow this kid laid on the ref is pretty tough to watch. I will readily admit that I am no fan of USC, so that figures into my assessment of this as well.

No doubt in my mind. The kid cracked the official. Whether he did it intentionally, who knows. It sure looked as if he knew what he was doing.

Did you look at the video?
About ten times, Barry. It is grainy to begin with. He is in a crowd, and the blow is delivered so quickly that it really hard to tell exactly what happened. It could be that he hit him with his elbow, but I would note that the guy announcing the game on TV said he thought it was "clear" that Schirmer was going for the ref.

Who knows?

I'm also wondering what happened with his suspension, I'm guessing that the Trojans satisfied themselves that it would not prevent him from playing CFB before they offered him.

Yes, we did. Did You?
If so, what were you smoking....drinking, ingesting before you watched it?

Looked right at him as he punched him and showed zero remorse or emotion after doing so. He wasn’t in some group of random players - they were all on his team. Intentional as hell in my book. Also, who hits his helmet like that? One strong, quick jab (closed fist) and then stops? I’ve never seen anyone do that. Plenty of open handed slaps to the crown or side of the helmet but not this. He clocked the ref then acted like nothing happened.

lets look again

It’s not definitive for sure. But to me it looks like he hit himself. His head moves like it got hit right at the moment it should if it was hit. And he immediately turned away as if he had no idea he hit the ref. His story is plausible enough for me.

How does he hit himself and still hit the ref hard enough to knock him out? On subsequent viewings you can see he does hit his helmet - but it’s such a strange movement; he could be telling the truth but maybe he went to punch the ref and his helmet got in the way. Dunno.

It’s too blurry to tell. Innocent until proven guilty. In this case, his action injured a ref. Intentional or not, he deserved a suspension. But it’s too inconclusive for me to say a lifetime ban is appropriate.

Which of his coaches has been assigned Leavenworth prison to recruit?

Still guilty of knocking someone out - intentional or not, that’s never a good thing during a ‘non football’ play (or football play for the matter).

Worst dog are my lunch excuse ever. It would be major news headlines if PSU signed him. On another note, who will teach him how to spell his name before he enrolls?

Knowing Mary :) she was likely referring (incorrectly LOL) to the kid commenting on the video.... kid with a first name of "Anfernee" IIRC.... and assuming that was the kid who was the subject of this thread.

Mary has never been accused of being a "rocket surgeon".
Mary scored a 36 on the Wonderlic test when hired by General Electric in 1967. Guess I had a lot of lucky guesses

Looks like he punched his helmet and hit the ref accidentally..,
I mean, if it is true that this is something he often does then I don't think it's a huge issue. It's an unfortunate event but people make mistakes. I don't think giving him a scholarship is the worst idea.
If Penn State added him I think some would have a different opinion than they do now.
