ADP: Businesses add 219,000 jobs in July
U.S. hiring got off to a fast start in the second half of 2018, according to a private report, possibly signaling that sturdy job growth will continue despite worker shortages.
Payroll processor ADP said Thursday that businesses added 219,000 jobs in July, and that could mean the government will report a third straight month of strong employment gains this week.
Economists surveyed by Bloomberg expected ADP to count 186,000 new private-sector jobs. They estimate the Labor Department on Friday will report 190,000 payroll gains in the public and private sectors.
Monthly job growth has averaged 215,000 through the first half of 2018, Labor figures show, That’s well above the 170,000 or so economists expected in light of a 4% unemployment rate that’s near an 18 year low and making it tough for employers to find workers.
