Antonio Shelton suspended for Minnesota

Absolutely the right thing to do. Anyone think Joe would have done any less?

This is one of the reasons Franklin should be held in high esteem by every member of our fan base. He has maintained and strengthened the foundation Joe built. Success with honor. It was a major fear of mine that the school would not find the right fit. That they would hire a snake oil salesman. They hired a guy who has it all. A fitting successor to JVP. He, and this program, is all the monument necessary.

From the above article:

“Franklin said he has made the mistake before of not addressing a situation the right way after a hard-fought game and that he made sure Shelton knew his actions would have repercussions.”

To what situation are they referring? The Johnson “Shh!” and/or the McSorley punt at iowa in 2017?

I don't think either one of those should have led to suspension but I'd like to think they were addressed privately but maybe not.

Their starter is a beast (Smith) who has seemingly been there for 17 years (he split time when Minn was at PSU in 2016, IIRC)...... and the back up is pretty good too (Ibrahim, the kid from Maryland)......
And their OLine has been playing better and better (and is HUGE. HUGE as in “makes the Wisconsin line look small”. Seriously)

FWIW: The kid from Williamsport is like 4th-5th team...... but they do usually get carries for 3 guys.
Heard one of the talking heads reference the Gopher O-line size in the last couple weeks. Depth chart from their last game says:

LT 6'6" 325 lbs
LG 6'6" 325 lbs
C 6'5" 305 lbs
RG 6'5" 345 lbs
RT 6'9" 400 lbs

That has got to be the biggest O-line in college football, if not the pros.

And they've given up sacks on 14% of pass plays. (PSU is 6% for comparison)

the right side of that line is slooooooowwww

If Toney is on the fat tackle he will have multiple sacks

He got a reprimand from the conference as well. I guess for optics a full game looks better, but I would have gone half a game and an apology for what I saw. I hope it doesn't come back to bite the team.
If it does, the right thing was done no matter the outcome. Life lesson learned. One day he will thank Coach Franklin.

Whopper line!

It might also be worth noting that we have a couple of freshman DT’s that eligibility - wise could contribute if needed without losing their RS.
The rotation looks like Mustipher / Windsor, Hansard / Culpepper, Barber ?, Hawkins ?

FWIW: Last three games: ZERO sacks
This is a solid team that has really been coming along as the year has progressed.

Yeah, I know, the competition. But zero sacks in three B10 games???? (And just 8 total TFL in those games as well)

These guys aren’t the NE Patriots...... but, I’m telling ya’, this may be the best team - the way they are playing right now - that PSU will face outside of UMich and OSU.
Last 3 games were against neb, Rutgers and Maryland who just so happen to be 3 of the worse defenses in all of college football. Minnesota barely broke 400 yards total offense vs Rutgers and only scored 42 because of a defensive touchdown.

Franklin says most of Sheltons reps will be split up between Rob and PJ.

They punted ONCE in each half against Rutgres (who they beat 42-7)

The didn't accumulate ridiculous stats because they ground out the clock from the 1st Q on... 5 possessions each of 4 1/2 minutes or more

(they only had 9 possessions for the game.... a typical game is around 14.... so that was about 2/3 of a normal game)

Ohio State level? No... obviously.

But the folks who - quite obviously - haven't seen them play are severely undervaluing this team.
Living in Minnesota I have seen them play chuckles

the right side of their line is slow and will have their amazing streak broken

Here's a little quiz:

When was the last time the PSU offense went three straight games - against anybody - without allowing a sack?
How about just TWO straight games?

(Answer: Purdue and Nebraska games back in 2013...…. if you find any time PSU did what Minnesota is doing right now - three straight games without a sack allowed - let me know, 'cause I haven't found a time where they did that)

I agree this may be our toughest game outside of Ohio State and Michigan. They look like a matchup nightmare, especially without Shelton. But suspending him was absolutely the right thing to do.

Anyone that thinks this will be a cakewalk is beyond crazy.

It's a very big loss. I wish it was for Rutgers.

It might prompt Pry to use some different alignments for the game. What you certainly can't afford is to have a tired D-line in the fourth quarter against a huge physical O-line that runs the ball.

They have more depth at DE than DT right now -- maybe they move YGM inside for some snaps and that makes room for Oweh and Asida Isaac. I'm sure Pry will try to make the best of a bad situation.

Actually, yes....... if we are talking 21st Century JVP.

Not saying whether that’s good or bad, but I doubt he would have suspended him.

Dan Connor was suspended 3 games for crank calling a retired coach.

What Shelton did could hardly be (accurately) described as “spitting in a guy’s face”.

So his lack of aim should be a point in his favor? He tried to spit on another human being. There is no minimizing it. He earned the suspension and our coach did the right thing.

Looks like norm has moved on from telling us how Pitt is the most improved team in the nation (funny how a loss to a dreadful Miami team will do that) even though Pitt had a 3 point win over FCS Delaware during their presumed march to excellence. Now we get to hear for the next 2 weeks how Minny is just Patriots-lite and how our DL will be lucky to be able to walk out of the stadium after going against their OL. You never disappoint norm. Using lots and lots and lots of words...while actually saying very little.

And running back Curtis Enis (an All-American, btw) was benched in the 1998 Citrus Bowl for accepting a suit from an agent (and also for lying to Joe about it, which is probably what got him suspended).

I tend to visit opposing teams message boards, I dont post on them but I like to see what they think. Minnesota has a thread titled CFP or Rose Bowl. They see us as really no real threat. Hamler falls somewhere in talent between their 2 wide receivers. We have no other weapons besides a pretty good tight end. They bring up our running backs and that we wont be able to run on them.
So the short of it. I wont take anything away from the Gophers, 8-0 is 8-0. However just for statistical purposes when you look at top total offenses Minnesota is 44 and PSU is 49. Less then 100 yards separate the 2. However when you look at defenses we have played 5 teams with defenses in the top 25. Michigan and Iowa in the top 10, Pitt and Buffalo in the top 20 and Michigan State 23. Minnesota has played 1 defense in the top 50, Georgia Southern in the 30's. Just some perspective on who has been battle tested. Beating Iowa, Pitt and Michigan in grind out games is different then going to the wire with Fresno State , GA Southern, South Dakota State or Purdue.

You all know Joe must be nodding in approval from above. It was the right move.

Imagine if he was hurt instead. In that case, according to some, Franklin would have forced him to play whether the kid felt up to it or not.
So there are those who think that Franklin makes players play when they are hurt when all they have to do to keep from playing is to spit on (OK, toward) someone?

i think it is setting a fine example. Either you have rules and live by them or you don't. If you want to be a fan who only cares about winning.....enjoy the NFL. I applaud Coach Franklin. Spitting at/on another person is a vile disgusting act.
Very well put. The standards of our culture are set by the behavior we tolerate from those we value —regardless of timing. We could use him v Minny. CJF is handling this well.

I hope the message is well received not only by Shelton, but by the entire team. I can't imagine it is easy to manage 85+ 18-22 year old "sons." No individual can be made to feel they are "entitled" to act in a manner that is detrimental to the team. Boundaries must be established and strictly enforced.
If CJF had not dug in on this one....then shame on him. He did the right thing.
I only coached 30-40 high school boys. On one terrible night I had to remove 7 boys from the team (drinking)....5 starters! These were basically good kids who made a mistake....some of them had played for me (varsity) for 3 years. Trust me, it isn't an easy thing to do.

Tough story. Suspend or remove-entirely?
