Any concerns with Bo getting pinned?

Has been taken to his back a few times. Can't tell how close is was to getting pinned.

Concern of anyone getting pinned on any given day. That being said Bo certainly wrestles a style that makes him far more at risk of getting caught. He has defeated just about everybody of note at 174 with exception of Crutchmer. Jackson caught him in a throw and that ended up being his only loss. Getting caught like he did against Jackson or even something worse should be the only thing standing in his way.

IIRC, the back points off the failed throw in the Jackson match was in the 1st Period and the score was 6-2 going into 2nd. Bo was down in the 2nd and immediately escaped to 6-3 and literally chased Jackson around the mat for the entire period. Finally near the end of the period, the official called a stall on Jackson but the period ended 6-3. Then Jackson selected neutral in 3rd. Bo took him down early and cut him, so the score was 7-5 and Jackson kept doing nothing but running away from Nickal. Bo then took Jackson down again - the Official called the TD then as the wrestler's went OB waived it off! There was about a minute left and Jackson kept right on running away. Finally with about 25 seconds left the official called a second stalling so score was 7-6. Right at about the same time as the 2nd stall call, Bo shot again and appeared to have a TD but no call from the official and time ran out.

The way the match was wrestled and Officiated was a complete embarrassment to the b1g -- I would expect that the match would have been officiated quite differently at NCAA's and Jackson would not have won the match because what he was doing was anything but "wrestling".

Absolutely correct. I did not intend for my post to suggest his loss to Jackson was legitimate. Unfortunately the single throw where he got caught in that match ended up being the difference. I agree should they meet again Bo will be on top. I hope Bo gets the chance.

Bo will miss other throws, no doubt. Result will be an opponent TD if anything. Unlikely he goes to his back again IMO. Possible, but unlikely.

Agreed. Where is that tarpon from and did you land it? I am sure you have been asked this question before. Great pic.

Bo is at his best when wrestling on the edge of disaster. Sure, he could get caught, but I hope he doesn't change.

I think his biggest challenge will be creating opportunities as other wrestlers try to avoid mixing it up with him.

Curious that you ask, and you are the first. Lower FL keys, ocean side. Turns out this guy was just drying off, as they say. Fell off the hook on the next jump. Look hard and you can see the fly.

Did not notice the fly at first. Very nice. I used to (prior to kids) travel to Islamarada every year in pursuit of tarpon. I have been fortunate to have landed a couple. Avid fly fisherman and those trips were always a great time with a few friends. They still go, I still get invited but can never seem to make it work. :(

Agreed, it's possible that someone could stick Bo, but in those scramble situations, he has an uncanny knack of coming out on top or at least avoiding the disaster. He's like the proverbial cat that always seems to lands on it's feet.

Well, even in the one match to-date where it did cost him the match, it took some beyond pathetically awful officiating to create the loss. If the Jackson match is officiated by an even remotely reasonable official, Bo wins that match going away -- match should have been tied by the end of the 2nd Period on stall calls alone....the official went on to negate two separate takedowns by Bo in the last 45 seconds of the match - Bo wins the match if either one is called correctly. The officiating of the match was beyond embarrassing especially given that "b1g wrestling" claims to be the premier wrestling conference in the nation (and rightly so give the talent in the conference) - that officiating was a complete joke and disgraceful for the "premier wrestling conference in the nation".

Pins happen.

A more pressing question for me is does Bo have a "go to" shot to tie or win a match late? I didn't see it in the Brunson match or the most recent Martin match, though he got the job done. Didn't take Jackson down late in the loss, say what you will about the ref.

Winning matches off scrambles and counters is great, but possibly a chink in his armor?

I agree with this.. He needs that go-to shot.
He has kinda the same problem QW had at times; guys that really like upper body/throws sometimes cant decide exactly when to concentrate on the leg attacks.
Kinda like a QB rolling out and trying to decide whether to throw it or keep the ball and run.
As good as he is now at basically all aspects, next year I expect him to still be much improved at ankle picks and legs.

Don't know about that -- if you've watched him, few execute the "ankle pick" better by convincing their opponent that they are working on an upper-body tie-up & throw than Bo. He sometimes gets multiple ankle picks in the same match.

agreed ...thinking Nickal doesn't have 'go to shot' seems kinda crazy to me ..Bo can hit shots from pretty much any angle imaginable to people inhabiting this planet ....except someone anyone running 180 degrees in the opposite direction ...

I don't think he needs a "go to shot". This kid is so instinctual that he improvises from every position. He is such a joy to watch.

Any wrestler or fan who even dreams of Bo getting pinned better wake up and apologize or else he'll use his honkey/redneck* ninja skills to find you, take you down, and give you death by a thousand cuts using the extra blond flop of his hair which is secretly as sharp as razor wire.

I am not worried about Bo getting pinned. I am worried about his ability to get through the NCAA tournament unscathed. I love love love his style and approach, and he is one of my favorites to watch, but his style does sometimes put him in danger and that might very well cost him in the tournament.

Especially if he runs into an Official that permits his opponent to "not wrestle" his way to a win. Agree with you, the biggest risk for Bo is if he gives up the early lead as happened with Jackson and he runs into a complicit Official that permits the bull$hit tactics used by Jackson to make the lead stand. Of course the Official in the Jackson match also called a TD for Bo and then seconds later as the wrestlers went OB waived off the TD he had just called for Bo, but didn't even call "fleeing the mat" on Jackson, who already had a SW on him (e.g., regardless of how the Official called the "control" element, which he reversed from his original call, it is at the very least, 1 Point to Bo due to Jackson fleeing the mat to avoid Bo getting control and being taken down). This call happened with just under a minute remaining and Bo down 7-5. Then Bo appeared to have another TD at the very end of the match - no call by Official. Bo shot and had Jackson's right leg and as Bo moved up and behind Jackson, Jackson used his hands to get to a standing position - by rule Bo should have been awarded the TD.

In any event, my point is that Bo would not only have to run into an Official willing to let his opponent stall, but also actively butcher the rules in favor of Bo's opponent costing Bo 4 points or more... I would hope the likelihood of that happening at NCAAs versus @Indiana are extremely remote.

When I first saw the subject line, I thought it was a bizarre, random thought. I guess the 2 back points against Martin maybe? We might as well ask the same question regarding all our starters.

Here's a fact; In 130 dual meet bouts, Penn State has not given up a single pin. Think about that.

Anyone can get pinned, but the odds are our guys will not.

Bo is still unbeaten if the ref has a pair. Bo wrestles a great style that draws fans to the sport. He will probably get in trouble from time to time because of that high risk/high reward style. I hope he doesn't change and neither does Nolf. It is the way everyone needs to wrestle (or aspire to). It makes fans enjoy the sport. It has made me a huge fan, and I'm not exactly living in PSU country.

Didn't Jan get pinned once?

This disclaimer is perfectly allowable.

Jan was pinned in the Indiana dual this year. JG was pinned in the Iowa dual 2 years ago. Your overall point remains valid.
Yep, thanks...looked at the forfeits, eyes went right by the Indiana Dual...so it's happened once in 130 bouts.

Especially if he runs into an Official that permits his opponent to "not wrestle" his way to a win.

And that's my exact worry. I do hope Bo learned something from the Jackson match. He really didn't start pushing the action until midway through the third period and just simply ran out of time. IF something like that happens to him again, he's gotta take the Conaway approach that Jordan used against JDJ ... constant pressure, pressure, pressure starting immediately.

And to your greater point it didn't happen to Bo. Anybody could get pinned, but Bo has such feel that he is comfortable where most are not. It probably looks riskier to us than it feels to Bo in most of his wild scrambling. It is hard to argue with his results to this point. The guy is a gamer.

If I were the coach, as long as he wrestles the same way in practice as he does during a match, I'm willing to take my chances. Work to his natural strengths. Teach him to make better decisions, how to see when an opportunity is there and when the window closes. Hammer him on proper body positioning. Things like that.
