I am thinking about switching to Sling TV and adding an AirTV2 device. Sling is similar to other streaming services but doesn't get the local channels.

The AirTV2 device hooks a standard TV antenna to your Wifi. the antenna gets the local TV broadcasts and it integrates into the Sling TV user interface. That way, you get all of the streaming and the local channels. One other benefit is that you can hook a wifi storage device and locally DVR shows for later viewing.

I have done that... It sucked in all ways... Bought the best long distance antenna but Sling went package crazy.... Local channels came in great from multiple metropolitan areas... Hope sling has changed there channel groupings for your sake. Been a long time ....

They supposedly updated their UI. I think I am going to take advantage of their 7 day free offer before buying the AirTV2 Device. For me, that would allow me to get the less expensive TV streaming choices while getting the local channels via antenna for free.

Great idea.

My question is do I need sling to use that antenna
Yes. There are some that have their own app but decide support, smart tvs, is sketchy.

You need something on the tv to connect via WiFi. They do use Roku and fire sticks though
