Last year, we started handing out a number of scholarships right after the New Year began; while this year, despite room, we’ve been very slow to hand out new offers. The pessimists on the Board will say it is because Franklin is unprepared and just screwing things up... but the fact is, he’s a micromanager; he prepares for every possibility; just look at the assistant coaching situations- he’s filled those key positions almost immediately.
I guess one could argue that all the kid’s transferring could have caught him off-guard, but again, he’s a micromanager and I’d have to believe that few of the kids leaving caught him by surprise, even if he didn’t know for certain, I’m sure he had some idea so I have to believe he knew how many more spots he’d have available.
Last year, we added guys like Bowers, Givens, Petrashon, Stevens, Kelly and Windsor and,if I recall correctly, put out a number of late offers yet that isn’t happening this year. That seems a bit strange to me.
With all that as background, could it be that the staff already has a pretty good idea on who it has? We’re at 17 right now. We could take as many as 28 but it’s more likely we’re taking 22 or 23, at least those are the numbers thrown out by Phil during his chat this past week. That means there’s 5 or 6 spots to fill. I’m not seeing a ton of offers going out, that tells me something. Either the staff knows it’s in good shape with certain guys, or they’re only taking certain guys and if they don’t get them, they’re saving the ships until next year. I'd also say that it's odd we're not trying to get more kids to fill the class, we have spots available and Phil said that he wouldn't be surprised if 1 or 2 more kids transfer out as well.
