He picked Michigan- Which I used to agree with, however their recent slump in the past 15 years has really toned them down quite a bit.... But hearing Mrob talk about the game in 05 game brought back all that animosity I once felt. .... Man they OWNED us for 9 years... And a lot of it was BS. Excessive crowd noise? Miracle seconds back on the clock... wasn't this before instant replay? I can't remember if they started it in 05 or 06... regardless..

Anyways... I was at the MIchigan game in 2005, and I'll never forget the disbelief when we lost, how frustrated we were when there was 1 second left on the clock, and they had one more play... and then finally sitting in the 90th row or something.. I see 90 rows of arms shoot up in front of me as Manningham caught the touchdown pass to beat us as time expired... and we were stuck there, listening to them chant "WE OWN" ... PENN STATE...

By far, the worse loss I've ever had to witness in person. In any sport.

That was indeed very painful to watch. I cannot remember why the h-ll the refs added 2 seconds back to the clock but remembering when they did the instantaneous shift from joy to anguish.

As for most annoying fans... From PSU perspective can't go wrong in picking Mich, Rutgers, or just about any of our BIG "brethren". Another one that always got under my skin was Duke basketball. Although maybe that was as much because clowns like Dick Vitale portrayed them to be so much smarter than anyone else.

That one was definitely a tough pill to swallow. I specifically remember a rotund Michigan “man” looking into the camera and saying “same Michigan and same Penn State”. I work with a native Michiganian (?), and to hear him tell it the all time series is 20-0. I have to remind him that there were stretches where we had winning streaks as well, and that we are on the dawn of another one. But, according to my co-worker they are a threat to win the NC. Lol.

The current series is at 8-13. But consider how 2002, and 2005 were blatantly stolen by the referines... and it's 10-11. There were other years with lesser shenanigans... like 2014 with the BS offsides that cost PSU a real chance to win. PSU should lead the series.

That game pretty much contained every horrible call ever made by Refs for Michigan. Horrible ball placement, phantom 1st downs (if you were Michigan), A heel toe catch that has never been called a catch since, time put back on the clock, a blatant block in the back on the kick off (actually I think there were 2). That game, the Iowa '02 game and the IU bball game are the reasons the ref conspiracy exist.

That game was tough but that team was awesome. My wife's class wrote a letter to that team after the loss. A parent of one her kids worked for the university and delivered the letter. Low and behold her class received a surprise visit from the captains of that team and they thanked the class for their support and talked to them about persistence and bouncing back after you get knocked down. It was pretty awesome.

LOL wonder what year he meant? Give him the "42-13, 'nuff said" retort.

Michigan fans are by far the most insufferable fans in the B1G and I don't think it's even close. Second place goes to Iowa fans, who if you are around, you'll be ready to make an exit after about a 4 minutes, tops.

Michigander.

I lived in Michigan for 11 years, 2006-2017. To my surprise, I rarely got grief from michigan athletic supporters. Still, I have run into the sort you described on occasion.

IIRC, Floyd Carr was calling a timeout but the refs didn't see him. Bear in mind it's the coaches responsibility to get the attention of the refs to call a time out. It's not the refs responsibility to look toward the sideline after every play to see if a timeout is being called (unless it's OSU at Beaver Stadium in 2014 in which case the refs will call a timeout for you and even give you three extra seconds to kick a field goal). Four seconds ran off the clock before Carr got his timeout. He bitched that he was calling timeout for four seconds before it was granted. The refs got together and arbitrarily decided to give him back two seconds instead of the four he demanded. There was no real logic behind the decision.

Another mistake was the kick off to Breaston which started that final drive. The kick was perfect down in the corner but our coverage broke down allowing about a 50 yard return. IIRC, we had 200 yards of offense in the first half with little or nothing to show for it.

And, Jason Avant's size "16 shoe" was halfway out of bounds for all the millions of viewers to see when he made that catch on the last drive. But, the refs didn't see it.

That was beyond painful. I couldn't imagine being there witnessing it in person.

With that said, the more incorrect/BS call in that game that had a more direct effect on the outcome (IMO) was the Avant toe-heal 'catch.' Would have been 4th and long if that call was made correctly.

Ugh

I was also at that game, in the end zone where UM scored the "winning" touchdown. We couldn't believe even from the stands at full speed, that they didn't review the play. When I finally saw it on TV, I simply could not believe such a blatantly obvious call was screwed up, and not even reviewed. Even if they did convert the next play on 4th and long, the extra time that play took likely would have secured the win for PSU.

This wasn't a failure on the ref's part but rather bad luck, but there was also the pass in the flat that the RB bobbled and dropped. He was going to get tackled in bounds and short of the end zone - and with Michigan out of time outs at that point, they wouldn't have gotten another play off.

The series of events that allowed Michigan to steal that game was beyond unbelievable.

I was at PSU when we finally broke the 9 game losing streak. Finally! PSU should never lose 9 straight to anyone.

What would have been worse? The way the Michigan game ended or being left out of the championship had we gone undefeated ? Because I still think the championship would have been USC vs Texas.

The length of the streak alone is almost impossible, just more evidence that they had a little "help" from the zebras.

I'm not one to think everyone is out to get us, but it is hard to believe that the refs were on the level for that game. I still vividly recall several occasions watching that game where the ref took a diagonal route from the sideline giving Michigan an extra yard or so and then once the time clock and Avant fiascoes occurred I just exploded in front of my then fiancee and her friends. Not one of my prouder moments. She married me, but I don't think her friends have been back to our house since.

I almost broke my (then GF) wife's ribs hugging her when we kicked the field goal to beat #1 ND.... She forgave me too (but still brings it up every now and again).

Agree, especially with the "everyone is out to get us" part but when you see things like the bounced pass to the OSU TE that the ref was clearly looking right at, the non-int, again against OSU and the obviously late FG for them and you really do start to question what the hell is/was going on.

If I remember correctly, I believe one of the TV commentators question If the ref had been drinking, it was that blatant. The refs were certainly a factor, but so was the poor kick coverage late in the game and the inability to score in the first half.

As one poster said, at this point, the PSU trajectory is better than the Michigan one. Let them have their fun from 10 years ago, it is history.

Sounds like a win-win to me.

I agree on Iowa... They always have an attitude, and for what? They've never really won ANYTHING - It's almost like they know their program doesn't hold a candle to the big four in the East, so they always talk smack because they just so happen to beat one of them every other year.

It's like they have a season once in a blue moon and they make a Big Six bowl game and the reeeeeeesst of the time they lose non-conference games they have no business losing, like Northern Iowa, OR every so often to Iowa State who they play every year ... .... wait a minute forget Iowa Fans...

....Correct me if i'm wrong, but this sounds a lot like the scenario with Penn State and Pitt.

Iowa State has never been able to get their program off the ground which I think may have been hurting Iowa. When you play a team year after year that never competes for championships, you're never going to consistently compete for championships. ... I'm fairly sure Joe saw it that way too..

Looking at Iowa's history within the last 10 years, Iowa has either not benefited enough from beating the Cyclones or having it sink their season right as it starts if they lose. (Penn State Pitt 2016?)

WE ARE.... who WE ARE because of our Success on the field, off the field, and in "EVERYTHING THAT WE DO". Playing and beating Pitt doesn't make us any better, just like beating Iowa State hasn't really helped the Hawkeyes either.

Yep, all of that is true. What is often not mentioned is the presence of "Michigan Man" and director of B1G officiating, Dick Hoenig in the review booth that day. If you think he was there that day for any reason other than to ensure a Michigan win, you are nuts.

I tried to find a pic from 2005, however the only one I have is from the beat down in 2016... These are pretty close to where I was in 05, and Manningham caught it in the back of the endzone closest to us. All I remember is 100 rows of arms all flying in the air... and thinking, I hate these people, the only time this stadium has gotten loud the entire game is right now.. and it's BS!

Agree completely. THE.WORST. LOSS.EVER. I’ll never forget where I was in NYC watching that game. Since then Michigan is by far my least favorite team in college football.

Mike Hart definitely fumbled in the 4th quarter also.. that was never reviewed and occurred earlier in the 4th.

It wasn't a bad kick. It was inside the 10 in the corner. Breaston weaved all over the place. Pretty sure others have pointed out an illegal block but I honestly didn't notice it. I don't think the decision to kick it where they did was bad. Just poor outcome.

You're like El Presidente. Making things up. The play occurred on first-down-and-10, first play of the drive. Not 3rd-and-long.

The recent Steelers pats game is the only game I can recall that made me feel like I michigan 05. I thought of it immediately.

It's interesting. It's been 12+ years, so I might be mis-remembering that detail, but it's funny how there's such a correlation regarding the topics to which you'll chime in on to "correct" assertions -- Those who are showing support for Joe Paterno, and those who are throwing shade in the direction of the University of Michigan.

Even if it was first down, those free, unearned, extra 12-15 yards, with such little time on the clock, were massively significant.

That is what I remember. The kick was a good one in the right corner, but we gave Breaston some room and he took full advantage.
