Anyone know anything about Clayton Ulrey?

i just saw that a kid from my high school Clayton Ulrey (Lower Dauphin class of 2020) is on the the Cadet World team. I couldn’t find anything about his being recruited by anyone. Anyone have any info about him?

Don't know anything other than he's very good and is a pinner. Lost to a very good wrestler in the PIAA finals. Has had a terrific off-season and is even better in freestyle than folkstyle.

Seems like a good bet to break Lower Dauphin's unlikely record of not producing a state champ. And has some serious hair. Not committed to a college as far as I know.

Ulrey is on Diceman's blueprint for world domination (spreadsheet). His weight class just needs to be updated.

I've heard absolutely nothing. One thing for certain: he will be very popular with college coaches this recruiting cycle.

Just a guess, but I suspect we're not in his future. He'd likely overlap with Starocci and Brooks for 4 of his 5 years.

Who would have thought a school could have guys in the last single-class finals, have all three lose and still be without a title 46 years later. Hope he breaks the schneid for LD.

I don’t follow LD wrestling, but we were good under coach Cassel in the 80’s when I was in high school and I would have thought someone would have won a state title at some point.

I don't know how many times a school marched out finalists in three of 12 weight classes back in single-class history, but it couldn't have been many. Mutek, Stauffer and Neiswender did it for LD in 1973.

Ed Neiswender was gym coach and assistant wrestling coach when I was in high school. I think he replaced coach Cassel as head coach when he retired.

I'm certain without looking that Clearfield did it in the early years of the PIAA when they were very dominant.

'47 Maurey's (Don & Jerry) and Beers
'56, Johnston, Clarke, & Tripony
Lock Haven had 3 in '61
this is before there were 'classes' - think class A and B were around before AA and AAA

I typed poorly. I meant in three consecutive weight classes, which the Maureys and Beers did do.

Yeah, I think El-Jefe (as is often the case) has this right. Ulrey is wrestling very well currently at 80kg freestyle; in Diceman's spreadsheet, Ulrey is shown in the mix at 157, but seems to be on a trajectory toward 174 or 184, where there is some serious talent coming in.

Pretty sure Ulrey won’t be at 157 but he is tiny at 80 kg. Watching him today at worlds and he is much smaller than everyone he has wrestled. The Russian he wrestled in the quarters looked massive compared to him. Wonder what he walks around at? I do absolutely love to watch Ulrey wrestle. His pace is excellent and his lefty hi-c is beautiful. Whoever gets him is going to be very happy.

Back in the mid '60s, Lower Dauphin had one of the greatest teams I've ever seen. Their first five guys were monsters. Everyone wondered how much weight they were pulling. They had 2 other kids who were 2nd in the state. They never panned out on the big stage, but I guess that's been their problem over the years.

Yeah, lived in suburban Philadelphia (Haverford Twp. at the time) and I recall watching a Christmas tournament involving mostly Philadelphia area schools and also Lower Dauphin. They totally dominated the tournament and had the local folks shaking their heads -- who ARE these guys?

It's probably a tournament that @oldcourgar65 saw or knew about.

Agree, he is a lot of fun to watch wrestle. Didn't realize he was currently as worlds. I will have to go back & find those matches. Thanks.

or wrestled in and lost the finals to a kid from Lower Dauphin. One of those.

Iowa State was after Ulrey quite awhile ago. I assume they still are. But I think the feeling is that he wants to stay out East

he is a really smart kid, good grades and a great attitude and personality...I think El-Jefe is correct on overlap and what PSU needs are around his weight classes he could grow into. I don't think 65 is out of the equation for him if he would want to cut harder but the kid is jacked with muscle. The experience with Cadet Worlds and the training he received is only going to fuel the fire in this young man. But Cael has been able to pull off what we all thought he couldn't in the past so who knows.
