think about it

do you always signal lane changes?
do you ever tailgate?
do you drive with your emotions instead of your head?
do you hog the passing lane just to be an a-hole?
have you had an accident and honestly think it wasn't your fault?
do you run red lights if they are just "recently" red?
do you use you phone while driving?

This reminds me of that insurance commercial where she shows her man a safe driving certificate and says; "I thought you said men were better drivers" I know I'm a better driver than many people I see on the road but, I haven't always been safer.

I’m a terrible driver, I usually hit 3 iron off the tee.

Same here.. I think if you're a good driver and haven't have any incidents in a long time, you might become a cocky driver and that leads to a stupid mistake which could be costly.

think about it

do you always signal lane changes? - YES
do you ever tailgate? - only when the arsehole in the left lane is going under the speed limit and won't pass people in the right land
do you drive with your emotions instead of your head? - no, I have no emotions
do you hog the passing lane just to be an a-hole? - no because that really pisses me off when others do it
have you had an accident and honestly think it wasn't your fault? - no
do you run red lights if they are just "recently" red? - no, always err on the side of caution
do you use you phone while driving? - only for calls when they call me because it is synced to my car, never text and drive

Yeah, I think I am a good driver. I always stop at Stop signs(regardless if they have a white border or not), and I don't make lazy lefts(driving into the oncoming lane while making a left turn, that really pisses me off because people are risking a head on collision doing that).

Lastly, I always give cyclists the state required 4 feet cushion when passing them. If there is a car coming the other direction I actually slow down and wait instead of crossing the yellow lines and risking a head on collision.

Holy Crap! Maybe I am turning into a grandpa driver now that I am getting older. :D

As the Boomers get older we will see more drivers with cataracts, macular degeneration and even dementia, on the roads. I had to take my father’s license away because he drove like Mr. Magoo and everything was the other guy’s fault. No easy answers here.

The poll results so far are pretty funny, because there is no way that 79% of the drivers on the road are good drivers. Now it's possible that this board has an unusually high percentage of good ones, but that seems unlikely.

Self driving cars. I look forward to someday never having to drive myself. It will make the late game trips to PSU that much easier.

Actually, I think that is fairly accurate. Most people are good drivers. It’s the percentage that aren’t that make me lose my mind.

dont the results say, that of the people responding, 79% say they are good drivers. Maybe bad drivers choose not to respond.

You left out "Do you purposely drive over the speed limit."

I did not respond because "good" is subjective. I'll admit to making some mistakes on the road, but after more than 50 years of driving I've been involved in only one minor non-reportable accident. I would classify myself as "safer than most."

I find it interesting that people think it's OK to ignore speed laws, but all other traffic signs are valid.

This is going to really piss off some of the so-called "good" drivers, but I can find absolutely no valid excuse for exceeding the speed limit, even in a passing lane. The only vehicles authorized to do so are emergency vehicles with the appropriate lights and sirens. That's it. All other explanations are just excuses emanating from people who are impatient and/or failed to budget sufficient travel time. It should be acceptable to pass in the passing lane at the speed limit unless that would be to block an emergency vehicle.

Those who speed are also those most likely to not allow sufficient following distance, i.e., they tailgate. In fact I would wager that speeds in a lot of areas should at times stay well below limits in order to sustain safe following distances.

The fact that most people exceed speed limits does not make it the right thing to do. All people commit "sins" against their fellow man. Does that make it right?

As an older gentleman, I consider myself among the safest drivers on the highway. I have learned a lot through the years. For example:
**I know to put my turn signal on at least 2 miles before my turn to be sure other drivers understand my intentions.
**I know that a 35 mph zone does not mean 36 or 37. Just this morning some maniac passed me going 48 in a 45 mph zone. Crazy!! I tried to get his license plate but I left my glasses at home (I think) and couldn't read it. I do know his car was purple, or black....well, maybe blue. Anyway, I did give him the bird so he knows he did wrong.
**I know to never use my flip phone while driving. If I need to use it I safely stop in the right lane and put my blinkers on. Just a few minutes and I am on my way. Safety first, always!
I have more lessons, but I don't want to give away too much. I am writing a book called "Safe Driving The Geriatric Way." I'll be back soon with details.

I’m a terrible driver, I usually hit 3 iron off the tee.
watched Feherty last night. Had a golfer on that told a funny story:

Pro walks up to the tee and asks the caddy "driver or 4 iron". Caddy says driver and player wants 4 iron. After an animated discussion, player his a perfect 4 iron but screws the hole up and makes double bogey. Awkward silence as they walk to the next tee. as the player tees up his next shot, a mobile phone goes off. Everyone looks around like WTF? Slowly the caddy unzips the bag pulls out his mobile and answers it. "hello...yeah...right...I don't know....laugh...OK, thanks" and hangs up. The player looks at him and says "what was that"? "I had a call that i had to take." "Who the F was it". "It was your mother." "My Mother?" "Yeah, she wanted to know they the F you didn't hit your driver."

The idea was that it was the caddy who had to keep things light and moving along.

except certain roads have speed limits that are obviously less than they should be, hence PA having a 55 mph speed limit for the turnpike forever. Traffic flow isn't always best at posted limits and thus the need to pass at rates above posted. Engineers, insurance adjusters and police have all said similar things in regard to allowing to pass at over the speed limit reduces crashes.

It doesn't matter what it "should be." What matters is what is lawful. Do you agree with all of the country's laws? And yet, you abide by many that you would not agree with, or would deem to be wrong or at best inefficient.

Engineers, insurance adjusters, and even police are also just people with opinions. They don't make the laws. They can only influence changes in the laws.

All I will say is after being the victim of a texter when some kid rearended me at 80mph you know never to do it.
Didn't help that a childhood friend of mine lost a daughter who got hit by someone texting.

Last accident my fault maybe 12 years ago.
Every one since, none.

It wouldn't surprise me that 79% of people think that they are good drivers. However it has been my experience that most of them don't know what lane they should be in.

Sorry to break this to the vast majority of you but most of you drive like shit. Me too. I realized this as I got my CDL and learned how to drive a school bus when I retired.

well, knocking on wood, I've had few accidents. Having said that, I speed constantly and am often texting. So not sure if we are talking end results orientation (few accidents) or just adhering to the rules.

so you go 56 in a 55 you should be ticketed?

I don’t abide by all of the laws. For instance, I jaywalk when it makes sense to do so because there are no cars coming.
I have no problem with you not driving any faster than the speed limit. That is your prerogative. I just hope you do so in the right lane.

Not exactly what I meant but similar to show its not about breaking the rule its about the situation. There are many times for the sake of the rest of the traffic that someone should pass at greater than the speed limit. Moving to the left lane at a speed greater than the limit to pass/allow a car from the on ramp to get in to the flow of traffic is practical and courteous.

Of course it is. Otherwise, there would be no need for multiple lanes of traffic. If everybody was going to drive 55 on a 55 MPH road everybody could stay in one lane.

Not necessarily. Safe following distance relative to the number of cars may dictate use of the "passing" lane. I have no problem with that lane moving along at the maximum lawful speed, as it should be.

Drivers should stick to 55 as best they can. It doesn't matter whether police start writing tickets at 56 or 70. That is not the same issue.

Good citizens don't decide which laws to break based on whether authorities are going to penalize the law-breaking. Further, good citizens don't pressure other citizens into breaking laws (such as by tailgating someone going the speed limit in a passing lane) based on enforcement practices.

Good citizens would not be going the speed limit in the far left lane. I would agree with you about tailgating on a two lane road. But if you are driving the speed limit in anything other than the far right lane in a highway, you are not being a courteous citizen.
