Article on Jered Cortez

from the DuPage Policy Journal, can be accessed at THIS LINK.

Nice article, but stuff like this always cracks me up (emphases mine):

"Penn State University, which has claimed five of the last six NCAA team championships, according to the school's athletic website."

"Cortez made his name known during high school by winning four consecutive state titles, according to GoPSUSports.com, with championships coming at 112, 120, 126 and 132 pounds. His national honors include being the 2009 Cadet Freestyle national champion and the 2013 Junior National freestyle champ."

I wonder how many titles Cortez and PSU won according to other websites.

“I wanted to surround myself with people of like morals and goals,” Cortez said. “Being around great people only rubs off on you, because I believe you become who you surround yourself with.”

"The culture here is unlike anywhere else in the country.”

Send this to the NCAA's Mark Emmert. ;)

It may be a different sport but it's still what PENN STATE is all about.

I'll admit, I let the Hawk fans get under my skin when they make comments about Cael. Mostly about him bringing in Long because he needed him to win a championship instead of feeling Cael believed in the young man and felt a second chance would change his life for the good.

Cael does things the right way. I'm just as proud of that as a PSU fan as I am about the championships. Look at Cortez and his words. Cael not only brings in winners on the mat but also winners off of it. These kids are a joy to root for and you're proud that they represent our university.

In addition if they are not winners off the mat he molds them and they become winners and good young outstanding mature men !!!! Not all but the ones who want to be Champions on and off the mat....

Makes you wonder if the article was written by a Gopher alumn.

. People in glass houses shouldn't air how wonderful they are. There is a few other not as bad as Long, but still got in trouble with the law. Cortez is a Angel? I have some beach front property near where Az lives for sale! Any takers? You have had great wrestling teams in the last 6 years but don't walk around acting like just because there great wrestlers they do no wrong. Waiting for the come backs about OSU, but I'm not the one posting about how wonderful our little "Angel" wrestlers are.

Did Mikey just get a heads up that Fix is coming to PSU which prompted this rant?

Google and I both missed where Cortez was ever arrested.

So, like Jammen says: Link or it didn't happen.

Ignoring shirts, true freshmen, and weight changers (Micic, Pletcher, etc.): definitely top 8, possibly top 5.

Here are Flo's 133 rankings, for only returning wrestlers. I can't see Cortez being ranked below Forys, which would make him no worse than 6th ... again, with the caveat above.

2 JR Cory Clark, Iowa
4 JR Zane Richards, Illinois
5 JR Eric Montoya, Nebraska
8 JR Ryan Taylor, Wisconsin
10 JR George DiCamillo, Virginia
11 SO Dom Forys, Pittsburgh
15 FR Cameron Kelly, Ohio
17 FR Anthony Giraldo, Rutgers
19 FR Jamal Morris, NC State
20 FR Josh Alber, Northern Iowa

Yeah, the win over Jordan in the NLO finals last year is going to have him ranked top 10 for sure.

I think Taylor has retired, but you can replace him with Earl Hall

No program is without its problems so in that respect you are correct. In return, PSU isn't the only program that I respect... the coaching staffs as well as their athletes. Youre on a PSU board, you'll have to forgive us sometimes if we appreciate our boys showing faith in God, helping out a charity or any other good deed that may have done . Who knows, maybe the boys read these forums from time to time and realize we really are watching and really do respect them as people not just as athletes.

Asking MT for forgiveness is like asking Charles Manson for forgiveness.

No program is ever going to be perfect off the mat, as that relies on the decision making abilities of 20 year olds. And we've all been there ... However, the attitude / values / overall approach that comes down from the head coach and is reinforced by everyone in the program DOES help steer kids with the right attitude / values / approach to a school that fits.and potentially results in less problems and issues.

An assistant in our previous coaching regime once told me that the best wrestlers were very aggressive people and that in order to win you needed to bring in these very aggressive types and just deal with all of the problems this agression could cause off the mat. I humbly disagreed with his philosophy and am very very happy with the approach Cael and his staff are taking.

If you need to talk, send me a PM. If you don't feel comfortable talking to me I'm sure there is a licenses professional in your area that you could talk to.

I'm here for you, man. :) Just let me know.

As for your second paragraph, when combined with the story of the guys in Cael's first year saying his first practice was harder than any practice under the previous regime, it really underscores why this program underperformed at that time.

Agreed. You want guys that are aggressive on the mat and understand how to behave off the mat. Cael said a long time ago that he doesn't want to be babysitting his wrestlers.
