Black Shoe Diaries: No. 1 Penn State Flattens No. 10 Michigan, 35-7

From the Michgan Daily: "Pantaleo, facing the top-ranked wrestler at 149 pounds, Zain Retherford, put together a decent outing. Though McFarland mentioned that Pantaleo was disappointed with his performance, the sophomore, who mentioned Friday that he felt confident about the match, held his own against Retherford.'
He was down 15-3, not counting the four back points earned but not yet awarded to Retherford, when we got pinned. Held his own....?

LOL. I noticed that too. Looks like the standard for competing against Zain is being lowered with each dominating performance. If you don't get pinned, you're holding your own.

Funny how many guys "hold their own" on their backs against Zain.

LOL. I thought about posting that as a tease for the article, but decided that you guys would catch it and comment on it. Glad to see that you didn't let me down.

I'm glad I wasn't drinking hot tea when I read that article, or it would have ended up all over me. ;)

Well, if you only look up to the middle of the second, when Pantaleo got that TD (there goes Zain's Hodge!), he did look pretty good, relative to how guys are doing against Zain these days. Then he hit the wall and it was a matter of how long he could prolong the inevitable. He went over so easy on that first bow and arrow to end the second, Zain must've wondered why he doesn't go there more often.

One can only cringe at the thought of what it might've looked like had Pantaleo actually received a good, old-fashioned butt-whipping instead of putting together the "decent outing" he apparently did. ;)

I did like the addition of the bow and arrow to Zain's arsenal. Pantaleo had no interest in building his base for fear of Zain throwing the boots in. The B&A is a nice way to counter the flounder defense.

It seemed to me that once both Zain and Nolf surrendered takedowns, which almost never happens, they both kicked into another gear. Couple that next gear with their opponent tiring due to constant pressure and it gets ugly. Zain seemed to want to send the message that if you dare take me down, this is what happens...

I wonder if you are that guy who is receiving that beating do you, just for an instance, let your guard down/give up/consider quitting but by then it is too late, you are pinned. Gotta be one of those "how the heck did I end up here" moments right before the mat gets slapped.

There is no homerism quite like Michigan homerism....

Looked like Zain gave up the TD on a tie-up or possibly even a quick throw attempt where Zain kind of slipped off.... Honestly Pantaleo had done nothing but stall up to that point and "fell into" the TD when Zain accidentally slipped off him to one side and was off balance. More than anything, the incident seemed to piss Zain off and really light a fire under him - he was literally on a mission after that happened.

I think Zain just got caught unaware that Pantaleo had a shot in him and by the time it happened it was too late to sprawl. I rewatched match and he didn't slip nor was he off balance, he was just moving his head back up from Pantaleo's head snap when Pantaleo was suddenly in on his legs. But yeah, after that it was over.

based on that scUM write up, Rider has a finalist in Clagon.

I only watched the youtube once, but there was definitely something very strange about the sequence right before Pantaleo's TD - for whatever reason (I thought it looked like a slip of some sort by Zain) Pantaleo was effectively practically chest-to-chest with Zain and Zain seemed somewhat unaware of his proximity (seemed distracted by a slip or something if seemed to me). Even Pantaleo seemed surprised for a moment - almost like he was confused how he'd gotten into such an advantageous position - before he wrapped his arms around Zain and essentially tackled him with what I would describe as a "truck-driver" takedown, but really not all that "explosive" or "quick" due to the awkward pause I described above. Weird sequence, but Zain immediately got out and became a "man on a mission" after it.

Yeah, Pantaleo held his own for the first 4 minutes, even had a TD. However, the last 3 minutes, not so much.

I thought the same thing about Zain and was fearful that he may get careless - silly me.
I thought Nolf was just the same after he was dropped - unaffected..
