("The bout [ZPain - Clagon] could just as easily have gone Clagon’s way as he appeared to have a takedown in the first period that was never called ..." -- I disagree pretty strongly with the journalist's contention.)

...I don't think the Trentonian writer watched the same meet that I saw...
...in particular the Retherford/Clagon match...Clagon backed up the entire match ... his 2 first period shots came off Zain's shots... Clagon continually pranced around the out-of-bounds line... and the ref just let it happen...Zain rode Clagon for almost the entire second period and the ref let Clagon lie face down on the mat w/o any attempt to get up to his base...

...oh, well...

I didn't see the match. However, and FWIW, Beyers indicated that he has seen TDs awarded in similar positions.

Appreciate the info. I saw somewhere over the weekend a reference to something along these lines, but having not heard the broadcast I didn't have any context for what Ironhead said.

Clagon got in on 3 shots on Zain in the 1st period. Clagon was in really deep on the first shot, a double leg, but Zain got Clagon's ankle before Clagon was even close to a TD, and the ref eventually called a stalemate. The 2nd TD attempt was off of a Clagnon shot (can't recall what it was), but it ended in a stalemate and was never close to a TD. The 3rd shot came the closest to a TD, but I was checking each of the criteria and Clagnon never had a TD before the attempt was halted due to a potentially dangerous call.

That would explain what he wrote in the article. Thanks pipe!

I think Jason Nolf could end up an undefeated four-time champ and still not live up to expectations.

He won by major decision on Saturday against a guy who ranked 11th by WIN, 15th by Flo and TOM, 18th by WR and 20th by Intermat, and a guy who only lost 8-4 to IMar last year. Walsh scored all of his points on escapes, most of which were uncontested. Nolf never let his foot off the gas pedal, and never came close to being taken down or turned. And still the writer from the CDT (and a poster on the other board) say he "didn't look like himself."

smh, wtf, lol, & etc.

It can be hard to please everyone. ;)

Nolf was never in trouble in any part of that match, and as you indicated, Chad Walsh of Rider wasn't chopped liver.

I guess some of the complaint would be that the final score was 18-7, though 7 of Nolf's points came in the last 30 sec (a TD, 4 NF, and 1 for RT). Perhaps folks are expecting that Nolf will have a TF or pin in the 1st period of every match.

Walsh did have Nolf in a headlock in the 1st period, but Nolf was very technical about getting out of that predicament without giving up a TD. (I think the headlock came off of a shot by Nolf that was blocked, but don't hold me to that as I'm not certain of the sequence.)

I think there will be more matches like this for Nolf. Against better opponents, he doesn't seem to work all that hard to tilt them. He seems 100% confident that he can outscore his opponents by taking them down, cutting them, taking them down again, etc. That's a style that will win every time as long as you can execute it, but it doesn't leave observers with the same impression that a pin or a lot of NF points do.
