"Mark said he wants to be the face of Minnesota wrestling; I don’t see how you can be the face of Minnesota wrestling if you leave the state."

Honestly, given the huge disappointment he must have felt, that's about as mild as you could expect from him when specifically asked about losing Hall to PSU.

Frankly, I think he is right.
Even so, it's a silly and bitter sounding thing for someone of his stature to say.

Let's flip the rest of that quote, just to show how it sounds:

CS: It’s like a lot of things. Ethan Lizak is going to go where Ethan Lizak wants to go. I like Ethan Lizak a lot, but Ethan Lizak is going to do what is best for Ethan Lizak. You’re going to lose some of those guys. Minnesota is on a roll right now. Yeah, it kind of hurts, but you see it in athletics all the time. There are some other kids who left the state. There are a lot of different reasons why they go somewhere.

Yeah, I thought so.

To me, this is like a political commercial, where one side is taking something out of context, and using it against their opponent.

The following was from the end of the press conference, after Mark had announced for PSU, and when he was taking questions from the assembled press. The question is close to the exact text. The answer is exactly how Mark replied, minus a couple of ums, or things like that.

Question: "You are on course to be the most dominant, the most revered wrestler in Minnesota state history. How do you want to be remembered?"

Mark answered: “I would like to be remembered as the face of Minnesota wrestling. That's a big thing to put on myself. But I truly believe with the coaches that I have, with my teammates, my family, I'll take that opportunity and I'll seize it with everything that I have. My high school career is not over yet. I have two goals to take care of. I want this year, my last year, to be something special."

The question was not about his college career. It was totally about his high school career. Being the "face of Minnesota wrestling" in high school does not imply, suggest, or in any way bind a high schooler making that statement to wrestle collegiately in the state of Minnesota.

LOL. Context always helps. No doubt JRob was stung by that comment in Mark's press conference. As a coach, especially one with so much experience, he should have just bitten his tongue and left it alone. That being said, my comment above was simply pointing out that his statement wasn't nearly as incendiary as it could have been, and didn't mention PSU or Cael at all.

Everybody says JRob is a great guy,and I'm sure he is, but he's got a habit of making snarky remarks about Cael and PSU. Let's just say he's disagreeable on that subject.

I found the bull$hit about "9 National Dual Meet Titles" to be highly amusing - hard to call this a legitimate "National Title" when some of the best teams in the nation aren't participating in any given year!

JRob, and Goofer fans, always bloviating about this despite repeatedly getting smoked by PSU at both the Southern Scuffle and NCAA's really turns me off. The Goofer's aren't that much less relevant than they have been the last several years -- they keep bloviating about how great they are and then go into the National Tournament and lay their typical egg (especially on the 2nd Day)! Has really been "off putting" in regards to JRob and Goofers fans in general imo.

Yeah, I thought so.

Nobody sends more All-American wrestlers out of state than Pennsylvania! On top of that, no other state fuels the number of quality programs that Pennsylvania fuels - PSU, Lehigh, Boro, ASWP.... JRob crying about a Minnesota school-boy wrestler deciding to attend, and wrestle for, an out-of-state college is classless -- give me a break, the kid shouldn't be able to decide where he wants to attend college without being attacked and having his character attacked by a dick like JRob apparently is??? He's an 18 year old kid, if JRob loves these kids so much, you would think he would have the class and dignity to say, "Yea, we wanted Mark - he's not only one of the best wrestlers in Minnesota, he's one of the best wrestlers in the entire nation, if not the world at his weight and age. Are we disappointed he didn't choose the University of Minnesota and our wrestling club as his next career stop? Sure, you always are, we recruited him, and sold the University of Minnesota as hard as we could, but only Mark knows exactly why he made the decision he made, because it is only Mark's decision to make. We wish him luck, happiness and success regarding his decision.".

...those who know JRs history are not surprised by his surly nature...

...just ask the Hawkeyes who knew JR "way back when"....
