There have been loads of theories over the years, but now over there most center on the NLWC despite the fact that they probably have more ex-Iowa wrestlers in the HWC than we do ex-PSU wrestlers in the NLWC. They aren’t listening to TarpHawk who is one of the few with any sense (and an ex Hawkeye wrestler). He and some others realize that they need to go away from recruiting very good quantity over great quality. Cael’s teams may have “holes” regularly, but our top end guys overwhelm that disadvantage in tournament settings. If we were being shady, we simply would never have holes, but, with 9.9, you’ve got to sacrifice somewhere.

The word “elite” is doing a lot of lifting here. Some of their current elite recruits are getting beat by high schoolers or miss weight and/or duck competition (the latter alluded to by Ben Askren several times - I’ll leave you to figure out who that kid is, but we recruited better guys at his weight range)

Hey, dipshits, about 50x the amount of “elite” recruits live within an easy drive from State College as compared to Iowa City. They should know the phase “build it and they will come” by heart out there.

It’s like what @dicemen99 said about Iowa concentrating on recruiting Sebolt kids - he hopes they focus on that and neglect the East where’s there’s so much more talent. Good old Bob is going to wonder what hit him when his fancy facility is up and running, but the PJ Dukes of the world don’t even have Iowa in their top 5

Yeah, when you have a guy spouting it that's gonna have his name put on one of their buildings everything over there makes a little more sense. From the HC talking about programs paying reporters to smear them, to the program "insider" on the board who thinks everyone looks like an AA in the room and every recruit wants to be a Hawk until they don't, right down to the Ironbirds and Grips.

When the position a group feels entitled to has slipped away it generates a lot of false narratives.

Here's a thing that I legitimately don't understand and would love to have explained to me...

I've seen it explained PSU's place at the top is all simply due to the massive $5 million (or so, not sure the exact number) investment to set up the "slush fund" and provide a huge disparity in resources that no one can compete with. Meanwhile, the new $30+ million Iowa facility is being paid for through gifts and donations. If all HWC/Iowa needed to compete with or surpass NLWC/Penn State is a similar level of investment or resources, why aren't they using a portion of that huge investment to setup their own "slush fund" and negate the huge advantage that the NLWC has?

Seems like HWC/Iowa has plenty of resources available to them. Their leadership has just chosen different areas to direct the investment - top notch facilities instead of top notch senior level talent.
