It’s a rather slow news day, a calm before the storm per se… I’m feeling generous with the holidays approaching. So have at it, ask anything about Penn State on the field or on the recruiting trail. We’re an open book!

Who hits the portal after the Rose Bowl?

Any shockers tomorrow?

Do we have any QB on the portal radar? I find it very hard to believe JF will go in to next year with 3 scholarship QB's. I also find it very hard to believe a QB would come to strictly be a back up.

Do you think PSU will hold on to all of its recruits or is there a chance some might flip?
Florida DB Conrad Hussey is the name to watch - Both Florida State and Miami pushing hard there. Expect him to end up at one of those as of now but Penn State is trying their best to hold on.

1) I don’t see any major contributors hitting the portal after the Rose Bowl. Perhaps some guys buried in the depth chart.

2) As of right now, no.

3) You kind of summed it up - they would love to have another quarterback but good luck finding someone whose willing to be a backup. I think if they do address it, it’s likely after spring practices. Find perhaps a FCS QB who would like to be part of a bigger program but obviously someone whose abilities you can trust.

It certainly seems as though DT is a much tougher find in the portal than many other positions. Do we have any realistic options for getting a DT with some size from the portal? If so, who? Thanks!

A kid from Purdue just entered the draft today. He is 285 lbs so a little small but Purdue was a really good run-defense team. He's a senior so we'd only get one year out of him. Branson Deen is his name.

Don't know if we have any interest or not.

I do think Penn State would be very smart to go after Deen. He’s going to be highly sought after.

Of reported offers it’s Western Michigan transfer Braden Fiske and Texas A&M transfer Elijah Jeudy but neither will end up in Happy Valley. Other than that it’s hard to say, players keep info close to vest with the portal and sourfes are a bit tighter with givining information themselves. They are however in the thick of it for JUCO transfer Quintrail Jamison-Travis. He’s expected on campus next month for a visit.

Asked before… do coaches stay in touch with kids they recruited but failed to get while they are on other teams? Keeping a relationship would be good in the portal age but is it allowed by the NCAA or is it considered tampering?

Do they keep their twitter/FB social media contacts or do they delete them?

Aside but related to portal DT prospects, what happened with 2023 DT recruiting? Were not not any/enough quality prospects in the pipeline? Any other factors? Who is on the radar for 2024?

In a way yes, more so with their high school coaches. If you ever hear about programs “back channeling” it refers to relaying messages back and forth through coaches, trainers, etc.

Social media depends on the staff - most unfollow just to cut down on clutter.

Here’s another one: when a player they recruited hard commits to another school do they do an ‘exit interview’ ? Ask him why he chose who he did, what were key factors? Maybe go through a list of things like position coach, head coach, offensive/defensive scheme, team mates, expected playing time, training facilities, the campus itself, academic support, distance from home, girlfriend(s), and more. Have them rate each one with the classic 1-5 scale and see what the various strengths and weaknesses are.

Seems like it would a good way to strengthen recruiting. And if you can’t do so with a player, do so with one of their coaches or advisers as explained above. And do other schools do something similar?

What's your take on Chimdy Onoh? How many 23 recruits do you think we will sign in February? And Who?

Thanks

They don’t do in that fashion but they definitely over the course of a recruitment understand why they lost certain recruitments and such.

1) Onoh definitely has good size and a solid foundation to work with, would see him as a productive use of a scholarship down the stretch

2) I think they look to add a OL and WR at least after this week.

Any ideas on what may happen after the Rose Bowl with regards to more players into portal, guys expected to declare, coaching changes that may be on the horizon or someone leaving for a bigger position elsewhere? Is there any general sense to any of those things possibly happening.

What would be your best bet for the starting O-line for next year? Will it continue to upgrade in performance?

A solution to this may be a walk-on QB who is now holding out for an attractive offer (to him, possibly small conference....) but ends up deciding that he'd rather walk on at PSU than play at Slippery Rock. And that could happen after signing day or even into the 2nd signing day in February. Agree that there aren't QB's for the most part that would want to come to PSU knowing that they would sit, but maybe when the transfer activity subsides in the Spring a QB without any offers could decide to come to PSU and work on an MBA while being the emergency QB and get the MBA paid for..... Who knows

With the information available now regarding players graduating and/or choosing not to use eligibiity together with the announced portal losses, what's your guess on the total number of new players that PSU can bring in before the 2023 season. That would be the total of 2023 class members (from high school and JC) together with incoming transfer portal players.

Thanks.

I’ll get back to this this evening, I need to see where they are scholarship wise and not sure off the top of my head.

What about the OT from Rhode Island PSU was looking at that was in the portal ?
Seems to have little to no interest. That is even with alum Jimmy Kennedy as a mentor. I am ok with waiting for another round, just frustrated that some "should be a lay-up" look to go elsewhere.

Never mind on that - not surprised he’s headed elsewhere but the timing is surprising.

Where is Jimmy Hoffa?

Damn. Am I too late?
Never too late and I’m afraid I can’t tell you where Jimmy Hoffa is….

Any information on the persistent rumors floating our the AD about several key contributors hitting the portal for big NIL deals? Partly confirmed by connected people at other schools that have expressed interest?

How are the current young WRs we have developing and any emerging as a certain starter next season? Wallace, Evans, Saunders, Meiga, Clifford, Dottin, Ivey? Scuttlebutt here is none of them are showing big upside potential?

Not all their fault, Since Clifford's freshman year he tends to lock in on his preferred receivers. Have to give your players an opportunity to make plays.

Based off this season, Wallace and Evans are two players that I believe and I know the staff is very high on and believe could be impact players for the program. They need to continue their development but the results for both have been promising early on. Saunders may not have had the year that many thought but I think the staff is still very high on him and the future is still bright there.

Meiga, has all the tools but never has seemed to put it all together. He was a project player and so far it just hasn't worked out fully. Liam Clifford I believe can carve himself out a nice role in the offense next year, impressively strong and consistent hands. Dottin has shown promise throughout his time on campus but has been overall quiet and Ivey I believe is developing nicely thus far and still should be a quality piece for the Nittany Lions down the road.
