Ayron Monroe to transfer

cry, cry, cry for another one that couldn't see the field......wish him luck, but let's not say any of us were thinking:

"man, I hope Monroe stays, kid is a beast"

Wish him well but I don't see him as a given starter at a lot of programs. He'd likely get similar PT at PSU as a backup and on special teams. He can't reasonably think he'd develop into even a potential NFL free agent. I just don't get this one at all.

I keep reading posts regarding these transfers as no big deal, what happens when injuries hit next fall? Better pray for an injury free season, the first ever
I agree I hope the incoming freshmen step up because there will be plenty of opportunities to get on the field.

Instead of playing a stinky player that doesnt want to be here, we play a stinky player that wants to be here:)

I think what you will see is everywhere but QB and the lines there will be no more red shirting unless a kid is way, way underdeveloped.

Players like Brenton Strange will no longer red shirt because they will play on Special Teams.

Understandably, kids want to play. What you're going to see is kids who know they are buried on the depth chart looking to transfer- and some of them will. Starters and #2s will stay where they are. Most kids looking to transfer will have to move to lesser programs if they are going to get playing time, and top level programs won't be looking to sign many of these kids. Short term, it's going to be messy- long term, I don't see it helping anyone- the kids or the programs.

We have brought in two top 10 classes over the last two years. The premise is dumb.

the "stinky" part was sarcasm.

The other part isn't far off......with the way college football is going why would you want to redshirt anyone, even if they can help you on special teams. If they don't develop in to a starter it looks like they will leave. So you might as well play speed like Ellis, Porter, Rudolph, etc.....on special teams while they are here.

There is no question that these early departures and transfers are going to hurt the team in 2019. As some of are saying, we now need a number of freshmen on the depth chart and injuries will happen. Upperclassmen play better than underclassmen. Depressing.

I look at the positives. Penn State is projected as a top 15 program next year, based on what was believed to be returning. Most athletes expecting to see significant playing time in that situation would not leave. So some of the more experienced kids in the program who see the underclassmen every day at practice are deciding to try their luck somewhere else. To me that speaks more volume about the younger talent than it does about the state of the program.

On top of that, if there is a hole left by a transfer I have to believe our staff can recognize a replacement from somewhere else in the "portal".

"The portal" is going to be full of other program's #3s and #4s who are also looking for playing time which they aren't going to get here either.

I have read knowledgeable posters say that Penn State might be able to sign 27 this year since it only took 23 last year. Is that correct?

Furthermore, since Miner and Nana never really made the team because of career-ending injuries, would that allow PSU to sign 2 more in the 2019 class?

Yes, Minor and Nana don't count against the 85 max.

Thank you for replying. I understand that neither injured player counts toward the 85; however, since neither even made to fall camp, could PSU add 2 scholarships to the "first counter" total? That would allow a class of 29 (if 2 can be added for the 23 in the 2018 class).

They can add more than 25 this year if they want to.

Penn State players are reaping the benefits of Franklin's push to get players to earn their degrees in 3 years.

In the short run, it may leave the team a little short of depth in places next year. But in the long run, it frees up scholarships a full year ahead of schedule -- which would mean that PSU can recruit 25% more players than it would otherwise have been recruiting.

I just continue to see it as a win-win. Ayron Monroe can go out with two years of eligibility and see if he can find a place where he can play. And PSU benefits because they can get Monroe's scholarship back a year early -- and they could use those scholarships on late offers for 2019 freshmen, transfers or even walk-ons.

It also benefits the recruiting pitch for PSU because the coaches can say -- come here, work hard, if you don't win a spot in the rotation, you'll have your degree in 3 years and you can transfer out for a better opportunity if there is one.

What happened to this generation? It’s like they shy away from competition, so they can play where there is no competition. Terrible way to live your life, it’s a dog eat dog world

And allowing 4 games without blowing a redshirt is part of what’s changing stacked teams’ approaches to depth needs. Seems likely that most redshirts of the past will likely end up using that 5th year at different places from where they redshirted. Some of these changes are huge and will impact programs differently at various times, with good and bad for players, coaches, programs and fans.

Right now, I see this as potentially benefiting PSU more than it hurts. But that’s just right now...

So, I take it Shaka will be the next man up?!
I’ve been shaking my head and wondering why he hasn’t tried OLB for way too long. When was he going to grow into a DE? I respect the decision and hope he catches that elusive dream. Best of luck to him.

I don’t think it’s a generational thing. The reason we didn’t see these types of transfers before is that it was more difficult to do, and teams were less likely to take transfers. If it was this easy before, there would have been more transfers. I also don’t think it’s a simple case of running away from competition. Sometimes you know that you just aren’t physically as good as those ahead on the depth chart and no extra work can change that. Sometimes if a coach is being really honest, they tell you that. If I was a player who had nearly no shot at passing the one and two, I would consider it. I might only have one or two more years to play organized football then it’s off to the real world. I don’t want to spend thst time on a bench.

I believe he could start for pitt and 2/3rds of the ACC coastal. And for lots of teams in the non-P5 conferences......

Can't blame a players, especially a PSU player that kept his nose clean and got his degree, from pursuing his dream!

I don't think the majority are graduating in 3 years. Doesn't switching schools after 2 or 3 years makes it more difficult to get a diploma from the new school? IMO the relaxed transfer rules make football more important than an education. Not good IMO.
