B1G adding Friday night primetime games in 2017

Things were different pre-Title IX when schools didn't need football to fund the entire Athletic Department.

Agree, but wouldn't blame it on title IX. They would have gotten around to squeezing a rock with or without title IX. Title IX simply sped up the process. Why do I say this? Check out the corruption and loss of mission (giving a good education at affordable prices) at PSU and almost every other major university.

FC: "Penn State tells Big Ten No to Friday night home games....

Don't know if posted....story from Roar Lions Roar. Don't know how to copy/post article. Evidently, the B10 is going to experiment with six Friday night games in 2017. Penn State said "no thanks" because it would interfere with Friday night high school games across the commonwealth and be an issue for the community. They may however have to play an away Friday night game during the year. They also said they would be willing to play a day game Friday after Thanksgiving.

Wouldn't a Friday after thanksgiving interfere with Sandy's Black Friday shoe shopping?

This is about TV revenue. PSU, UM and tOSU regularly get 100k to their home games and that is a lot of money. So jeopardizing that by playing Friday night (with travel, especially at PSU) make little sense. I've seen that both PSU and UM have said "no thanks" so far. My guess is that (at least, initially) this will happen for lower level games where butts in seats don't drive revenue.

Watch any given NFL game outside the glamor teams (GB, Pitt, Dallas, etc) and you'll see tons of empty seats. The NFL used to black out local games on tv is they weren't sold out. Today, they don't do that. Why? TV revenue is greater than ticket sales. I feel like this is a similar play.

This is going to be great for the BTN. It will be left with nothing but dregs.

Yeah...when I first heard it, I though "oh, after high school season is over" but that's not the case. As with B1G, no night games in Nov. So these games will compete with HS. Again, not a huge deal because there isn't that big of a TV revenue for HS and watching college on TV vs High School in person are two separate, and minimally competing fan experiences.

In the end, it will come down to revenue. Will PSU/UM threaten their 100k+ ticket (and accessories like parking, food, etc.) revenue stream? I doubt it. Especially PSU where it would be tough to travel on Friday to make a PSU game starting at 8pm on Friday night (from Pitt or Philly).

But, in the end, its all about revenue so the realities of TV revenue versus in-seat will drive what PSU does.

Fairly sure the no night games in November thing is dead. If I recall correctly Ohio State had 2-3 night games in November last year.

We play Iowa at night this weekend (it's November) and Rutgres is an 8:00 game this month

The article posted has the B1G stating no night games in November (at least on Friday night).

And again, for now.
