I notice a lot of this after loses. The less stable among us start saying how they're done with the team, how Franklin and the staff sucks, how the team sucks, how specific players suck, etc. Then the civilized, level-headed members come out and mercilessly bash these posters, closing by saying how this site sucks, how they're done with this site, how other sites are better, etc. So, a few things:
1. Very, very few (if any) PSU fans paying for access to a PSU board are going to "give up" on the team after a loss. Or after any number of loses, for that matter. We're not talking about an NFL team here. We all have ties to PSU that are much, much deeper than geography and/or arbitrary childhood decisions. When someone posts about giving up on the team, they don't mean it. These posts and their posters should be ignored, and the site in general shouldn't be judged by their emotional outbursts.
2. Calls for a coaches job during and after bad games and after poor seasons is ubiquitous in college football. Again, this is just a matter of people posting while still overcome by irrational emotions. Let them vent. They are like goofy, overly emotional female friends. But friends none the less. Their irrationality doesn't make them bad people, nor does it make this a bad site.
3. Calling out individual players in a nasty way isn't cool, but again, in the heat of the moment people aren't thinking about kindness. I've personally called out Geisiki because he drops so many passes. And the next time he drops a pass, I'm probably going to post about it again - and it won't be a happy post. But I still support him, and I always will, because he committed to Penn State and I bleed blue and white.
4. The people who come out in response to all the above by bashing the posters, citing their immaturity and whining, are not wrong, but they are also not right. These posters are still PSU fans. Don't judge them by their inability to control their fan-emotions. Judge them by their good taste in universities.
5. The people who bash this entire site because of the aforementioned posters and threaten to leave, etc. - I think they too are guilty of emotionally motivated posting. Many posts are annoying, but so what? Let us have the freedom to post annoying nonsense when drunk and upset by a loss. Personally, I think I'm going to stick around this site for as long as it exists. Why? For one, I like getting info that is hard to come by elsewhere. But more than that, I enjoy having a place to go where everyone shares in my love of Penn State. That's all that matters to me, and that's all that should matter to you.
