Basketball sucks

The problem is compounded by tv time outs. It seems like a time out is taken every 15 seconds for the last 5 min of the game. They need to seriously decrease the number of time outs per half.

No doubt...thy don’t need many time outs because they get TV timeouts, timeouts every time they go to the monitor (which is becoming more frequently), timeouts every time there’s an injury, and timeouts every time a player fouls out. They put in a shot clock and the game got longer...go figure.

There's something wrong in sport where you can score 50 times in a game and still lose. Honestly I think the only other major sport out there that rivals this amount of scoring is cricket. Baseball hockey and soccer you rarely see more than 10-12 points combined for an entire game. Football if you looked at number of scoring plays it's maybe 5 per team on average.

Basketball on the other hand devalues scoring to the point that it is boring to me personally. I mean ffs the average points per game in the NBA this year is 106.3 up from 105.6 last year and 102.7 the year before (https://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_stats.html). Usually only the last 5 minutes and handful of possessions during the game determine the winner so why not just shorten the game to 2 10 minute halves? Each score would mean that much more, players might actually play defense and heck you could even have double headers since the games are half as long.

100% agree and you really only need to watch the last 5 minutes of any game to see anything that matters.

That’s all the longer a game should last. Since the last five minutes is when a game is won or lost - just cut to the chase, make the game five minutes long and be done with it. The rest of the game is just filler. Team goes on a ten point run, then the other team goes on a 12 point run, they trade three pointers...ho hum.

They should eliminate a time out from each team for every TV time out that is called. This would speed up the game considerably. It would still be an unwatchable mess, but at least it might help our obesity problem.

My roommate in Cedarbrook used screw me " we can watch something else when the basketball game is over, there's five minutes left". Every time it took an hour.

I watched the Pens last night. I am a decent basketball fan, but when they changed the rules to go directly to the NBA, then the one-and-done rule, I lost interest. These teams have no soul. Not excited to see Lipscumb or Iona play. Heck, I have no clue who plays for NC State or Gonzaga either.

I watched the Pens last night....they are playing better and that offense! Malkin hit a laser just inside the back post.

Agree...there are four TV timeouts and each team gets (IIRC) five time outs. If both teams take their allotted TO's, there's one every minute and a half on average.

Makes a heckuva case for increased US interest in soccer. It’s constant action. Over the past few decades, the difference between constant action and constant stoppage has become meaningful and especially for games with a lot of stoppage it’s gotten so much worse. Live games are almost unwatchable.

DVR is probably the only thing that keeps me watching consistently. Play still stops, but it at least doesn’t just feel like the whole thing is a waste of time spent listening to talking heads and watching Geico ads.

The TV timeouts are too much, but you think they will cut those back? Hell no, too much money in advertising. I coach HS basketball and we get 5 too use in 4 8 minute quarters, I think thats 1 too many, so college should definitely make a change.

Go to 10 minute quarters, TV TO's at under 5. Breaks between quarters can be 2:30. Team TO's should be 2 30's and 2 60's, so they cant go to a commercial on the 30's.

The end of basketball games are rediculous. Between endless timeouts and intentional fouling you get about 10 seconds of continuous action.

Compare that with hockey where there are no forced timeouts. Last two minutes of a hockey game with the goalie pulled are the best two minutes in sports

Sorry, but soccer is anything but constant action. They play for 45 minutes (or whatever) and the score is 0-0...then they go to a shoot out...why not just skip to the shoot out and make it more exciting? Soccer, golf and car racing just don’t do it for me....certainly not made for TV viewing. But that’s just me.

There’s a very fine line between scoring too much (basketball) and scoring too little (soccer). Football crossed that line when it started implementing rules that make it virtually impossible to play defense (esp against the pass). The result - ridiculous video game stats for QBs and WRs and TOO MANY DAMN POINTS!!

It should be hard to score points.

Basketball isn’t the only sport with a tv timeout problem. The NFL and college football games seem to have plenty as well.

And at the pro level NBA ratings are way up I don’t know if they are in college ball.
I llike watching college football more but basketball is also great to watch and it’s a lot of fun to play.
